Doi Haley Johnny Moore was a tremendous talent. Was lucky to see him perform many times in New York City. Loved him. No singer had a greater range. Enormous talent and nice person too.

probably the best group in r n r history.charlie thomas was not an original but he deserves alot of credit for keeping the name alive and the group going strong.

GARFIELD MALONEY........You're half right, but basically wrong. Neither was a member of the "original" Drifters, but both became Drifters at the same time--summer of 1958 when the group's manager reorganized the group. "Original" Drifters were not successful and very short-lived before being reconstituted in mid-1953. I believe that Clyde McPhatter was the lead singer of the first two lineups, but the second group also featured Bill Pinkney, Willie Ferbie, etc. and scored several big hits in '53--'54 before McPhatter left the group for a solo career. 1-12-18

Egbert Souce But lead singer Johnny Moore served 2 tours with the Drifters. 1955-57 and again 1963 until his untimely death.

Johnny coming back was a great last gasp for The Drifters before all that classy, harmonious, synchronized, in-tune stuff became passe', wasn't it? I mean, tuxedos? Really? Looking like gentlemen ready for a night at the club? Wow, how prehistoric. RIP, boys.
I just love theses old clips not just for the lovely songs and vocals but the way people dressed.

approx 5 years ago charlie put out a cd with all redone songs with him on lead.i heard it once and it was great.

The Drifters also benefitted from the Songwriting Legacy of The Late Jerry Leiber (RIP) who did The Words and Mike Stoller (Music). They did On Broadway and There Goes My Baby. Ben E. King also was in the Group before going solo. I love this Channel. So many amazing rare performances.
I knew charlie in the 70,s.used to shoot pool with him at a club in banksville n.y.really good guy.at the time he was not in group because of a lawsuit .I believe the lead at the time was named fredricks.but when you m really talk about the group you gotta go back before charlie Ben e and Rudy lewis.you gotta go back to the beginning.even though it was basically a different group.they were super.the later drifters became really commercialized and their music was very similar ,,every record.but all together they were super.
You mean back to Clyde McPhatter,Bill Pinkney,the Thrasher brothers,Willie Ferbee &Walter Adams on guitar,or back further to Clyde,Chick Anderson,Charlie White,David Baldwin,Little Dave Baughan & Wrinkle Johnson.

wow! this is better then better to see footage of the Drifters! i would love to see if there is any footage with Rudy Lewis on TV before he passed away if there such a thing? Does anybody know if there ever any footage with him on TV?
+Dean garretson I'm sure I remember seeing The Rudy Lewis-led Drifters lip sinking to "Up On The Roof" on a "teen dance Show". But, I can't remember which one.
Dean - I've been searching for years for live footage of the incredible Rudy Lewis but, alas, to no avail! I'll continue to search but I'm not very confident.
Dean garretson - No disrespect to Ben E King, Rudy Lewis was the best lead singer the Drifters ever had! Unfortunately, he died just before the recording session of Under The Boardwalk!
Robert Velez.........Clyde McPhatter wasn't exactly chopped liver !! You're entitled to your opinion but who's to say--they were all great in their own way. There could be nothing to question if you said R.L. was YOUR favorite. Hate these "debates"; they're just silly and prove nothing, IMHO !!! 4-20-19
