Surviving Blastomycosis: A potentially deadly fungal infection

  • Let's talk about why I have been absent online recently. Over Christmas, Royce was diagnosed with a very serious fungal disease called blastomycosis. If left untreated it can be fatal. Humans and animals can catch the disease from inhaled fungal spores in rotting organic material and soil. There is currently an outbreak of it in people in Northern Ontario. Today, I talk about what happened and how I now have a love/hate relationship with fungi.

    My dog was diagnosed with this about a month and a half ago. It's the saddest thing to watch them go through, devastating. He has gained his Appetite back, and his mood is better. His legs are very weak is the biggest thing now. He is making small improvements. Glad your fur baby is doing better! (I noticed 2 yr old video, so hope he is still doing well.)

    Glad you made this video!Currently treating my golden doodle for this in middle TN. It’s infected her lungs as well. She started with a random limp we figured was from playing with the other dogs and then one of her toes got infected (still was not sure what was going on) Noticed weight loss once she went to the first vet. We ended up going to a better vet when her lymph nodes got swollen and got the diagnosis. I am so scared and heartbroken but hoping we started at a good point. She had a small dry cough/gag when she got excited, which was alarming for us too. I was wondering if I should get checked too- might have to!

    Hi. I really hope you get this. We just lost our 5 year old healthy husky to Blasto on Tuesday and now our sweet 4 year old husky has it. It took our 5 year old very fast. Sunny, our sweet girl, doesn't have it as severely but she's just started on the Itraconazole and is starting to have a difficult time. Not eating is the biggest challenge. If you have any suggestions for getting food in her or anything at all that helped your dog, please let me know. We are devastated.

    • @TheWildYam
      @TheWildYam  Před 2 lety

      Oh I'm so sorry to hear this! It is such an aweful disease. In the beginning I fed Royce whatever he wanted. Remember for itraconazole (I'm referring to capsules not liquid itraconazole) to work it has to be given with a fatty meal. I would give him yogurt and cooked lamb balanced raw dog food patty. It smelled so good I wanted to eat it. We did the merry-go-round of wet dog foods that I would make into little balls and hand feed. Sometimes, I had to put them at the back of his throat to make him swallow. He was also on a medication called mirtazapine which is an appetite stimulant you can get from your vet. Every day his meal was different and I just went with what he wanted even if it was people food. Eventually he ate more and more on his own over the first 2 weeks of treatment. I pray your fur baby gets better soon. My condolences for the loss of your sweet husky.

      Sorry this is happening to you. You can't buy the spore it is in the soil or rotting wood. It occurs sporadically. I think you should take them to the vet. Dogs cannot give it to eachother

    So glad your friend is doing well. Fungi are no laughing matter. We're lucky our immune system deals with them pretty well most of the time. I'm including a link to a BBC clip about the fungus cordyceps. It's used in Chinese medicine, but what it does to insects is scary.
