ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city s a Police Officer and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 1200 breeding ewes.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on CZcams and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Since starting The Sheep Game I have met Lizzy and had two incredible boys Jock and Angus. You will see them all on this channel!

Love it! Several past pets have been named due to how either my students, or my son, changed an original name. Go SPOCK!
In all honesty, I couldn’t change the name for one of my dogs, because she refused to respond to anything but her original call name, which was “Magic.” Magic is really an awful name, because if you get irritated and even slightly grumpy, the name sounds very harsh.
I absolutely love the name Spock for him! He’s whip smart like a Vulcan and he’s even got the pointy ears and black hair like Spock. I think it suits him perfectly 🖖
I love the name Spock. Its extra cool because its what Jock calls him and we all want him to live long and prosper. 😉

I love Spock! My dog was Roman when I got him, changed it to Norman and he never noticed.
Dogs can understand having more than one name too. My dog has like 5 nicknames and she answers to all of them and to her "formal" name. 😊

I watched the entire Fat Ring section
It was difficult for me as I am a Vegan
Have been for over 40 years
But I also wanted to see the process for myself as I am not that naive to think everyone will one day become a Vegan
My Environmentalism includes Food Security as well as Animal Welfare
The Majority of people are, and always will be, Meat Eaters
I have now come to the conclusion that it is better for us as 4 Nations to have Farmers who provide the entire U.K. with sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food and for Animal Welfare standards to remain high and for the Meat to be the highest quality
So there is not need to feel conflicted about showing us the Fat Ring

I’m not interested in Star Trek but I think Spock is a brilliant name. It’s a good alternative and will be a great story to tell Jock as he grows up.

Good decision keep those lambs. Many farmers have sold their ewes there will be a shortage of breeding sheep in the fall of the year.

Always a really tough decision with the ewe lambs especially as the prices are mental, but always better to keep your own headaches rather than buying someone else's. Great video as usual, Spot will be a good dog, tough age to train and tougher still the wrong time of year with the ewes in lamb.

Has anyone ever researched why Border Collies are capable of being such magnificent herding animals? They live to please!!
When I was Jock's age I lived on a farm in northwest part of the State of North Dakota we had a Border Collie named Bob. He watched over me and protected me from our turkey gobbler who disliked with a passion.
Bob was capable of going out to the pasture and bring the cattle in for milking all by himself. He lived to be 17 years old. The year was 1937.
I vote Spock as well.
I think Spock is a better name for your pup fits him better, then Spot. The old saying is truth and names from the mouth of babes.

I wonder if he had a spot on his head as a pup and the black grew in. Spock sounds similar enough that he would adapt to that. Do those open ewes go for meat at this time of year? Our cull market has been very good in the last month or so.

Selling sheep for money is the way to get income at a quiet time of year. You should keep the best ewes for breeding but selling a few others is fine.
Sheep are sometimes smart but mostly they are practicing for their next death attempt.
😅 i know Jimmy! I think i have the knack of what causes pain. It’s lifting things in front of me that seems to cause all the issues! Like dosing the ewes was a real issue. Lifting close to the body is ok. 😅

Please give us a lesson using the whistle, I have the ACME 575, and am having a hard time figuring it out. My dogs love their whistle recall.

@@TheSheepGame Yes, similar sheep whistles, mine the ACME 575 is very similar to your Logan style; both have a similar hole and construction, mine is folded over. My Malinois is a smart girl and this would be fun to work with her on new engagement exercises.
I use a Logan myself, but started on a plastic one given to me by a friend. She said the best place to practice trying to get a sound out of the thing, was when driving in my car, as long as nobody else but maybe my Australian Shepherds was in there with me, so I wouldn’t get embarrassed by the struggle til I figured it out. You will be surprised how LOUD those whistles are when you first get them to speak! After that, you can practice outdoors. My friend said it wouldn’t take me long to literally learn how to whistle “Dixie,” and she was right - once I got it to sound, actually getting it to make the sound combinations I wanted, didn’t take long at all. Besides using it for my dogs, I have fun imitating local birds. It’s pretty funny when one of those on territory, comes flying in all in a huff, trying to find the bird that he heard a moment ago! 🐑❤️

Spot has a small white spot on the back of his head between his ears I like Scotty when he was in the pen he was protecting Jock if you watch he was keeping the sheep back the pretty Texel made the most money hope she went to someone who might be lucky to breed her next time

Interesting prices for those ewe's - the Texel did the best by the looks - it that normal that buyers prefer the texel over other breeds especially if going into the meat market?
