The yellow Spotmini is simply the best and most good looking of all.I love the overall design of the whole robot too. I dont think any robot could beat it.backflips are cool but arent necessary for a dog.
tripodalt yep it is, it’s essentially a robot dog, equipped with tools for industrial work. To most people that will eventually work with them it’s a metal dog.
Robots fight tournament similar to UFC and comparable to F1 car racing would be a great way to raise tons of money to fund these projects. Sports generate money. It would be a great way to keep us entertained, and calm down our thirst for cathartic violence while seeing the latest developments while they manage to find a source of funding for the industry.
The small one seems to have the best HP to weight ratio. It is so agile! But I have seen the yellow B.D. robot in action. It can move quite fast too. I think they didn't have it moving too fast there because of the crowd being so close.
Boston Dynamics purposely designed Spot to be slow. Their Cheetah--a precursor of Spot--could run 28.8 mph on a treadmill. They tamped the speed way down in the Spot version to 3.5 mph, about the walking speed of a human. I believe this was to allay fears. Having Spot race past you on the sidewalk at the speed of a car might result in some unwanted human cardiac events. Same reason they made Atlas under 6' tall--less intimidating.
The input RC controls (aka remote control) isn't the impressive part, obviously. It's the same type of controller as a toy car. What's impressive is the degrees of freedom in combination with the feedback loops to stabilize all those motions. Tons of sensors on those robots essentially detecting the movement of the center of mass in real time and rapidly calibrating all of the actuators accordingly. We humans are so naturally good at coordination that we don't realize how difficult a process it truly is to develop proprioceptive sensing. Evolution achieved this through millions of years of iterations.... we haven't had quite nearly that long to reproduce it and obviously robots are not nearly as good, as a result. However, this tech is far from simple. Take a dynamics and controls class and you'll see why.
Boston Dynamics Spot - "I have an arm"
MIT Chetah - "Im really agile"
Anymal's robot - *"I CAN SPIN MY KNEES!!!"*
