@@lemigrant agreed. No one disputes Jordan's technical abilities and mastery. But since he's joined he transformed the keyboard to basically be another guitar player. If you listen to this compared to say Justin Stanton's appearance, its miles different. Jordan is syncopating with the guitar, he's not modulating or changing the feel of the song. For purposes of this video, I'd say thats fine, and its amazing how quickly he can pick up this song and play it. But a keyboardist should be so much more than that. Look at the magic of Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree) or Riverside (sorry dont know keyboardist name!). Even old DT before Jordan, or even old DT in Jordan's early years. The keys brought such a huge dynamic. Now it just brings a sound like another soloing Guitar. It was the sound that was getting old when MP left (he originally wanted a hiatus because it felt monotonous to him). Some of DT best "new" songs are when Jordan has his own parts (think count of tuscany, octavarium...which isnt even "new" these days).

@@CanadianDivergenthaha nice one, but alsooo as someone with perfect pitch, weirdly enough it can change over time. I've had to basically retune my brain for what I intuitively think of when I hear each note, because even though I have clear and vivid reactions to when I'd hear, for example, C as a child, if I actually hum those same childhood notes, they're all flat by basically the same amount. Nowadays I know what each note ACTUALLY is, but every now and then it just doesn't FEEL right, even if I KNOW that it is.
It's real weird, but kinda like if most people were kiiiinda colourblind, I can see colours, but the same colors I remember as a kid have actually shifted on the colour wheel compared to what my eyes are telling me, like if true red seems a little more orangey than it should. You almost have to relearn those colours and their relations to each other.
It's one of the few truly frustrating things about having perfect pitch. Other than getting asked "okay turn around.... now, what's THIS chord?" 😂

He’s obviously an amazing musician, but this is the kind of noodling that is typical for old prog, and Animals as Leaders have decided to use this sort of stuff very sparingly, that’s one of the reasons why they sound fresh. When he solo’d over Alicia Keys piano work on Empire State of Mind, there was certainly the feel I get from my more slower, bluesy musicians. It’s not a skill deficiency for sure they just creatively like to challenge themselves. It’s like two extremes of the spectrum of music where we have soulless, emotionless manufactured chart topping pop music and then super technical stuff that has little feel, I’d say Dream Theater aren’t too close to the latter end of that spectrum and I find this way more listenable than most boring mainstream pop.
