The Long EZ truly is the king of budget cross country. My first cross country flight in mine was over 1000 miles nonstop, getting 20-30mpg and going almost 200mph the whole way. The only "downside" is all the attention you get when you land. Fuel stops take longer because so many people come out to talk to you about the plane!

@@mafp22w I found it super easy and forgiving, coming from Cessnas and Diamonds. Way less stress due to the way the canard loses lift at low speed. The view is unmatched, like wearing a space helmet, the entire airplane is behind you.
It is very slippery so slowing down in the pattern can be something to get used to. And it climbs unbelievably fast.

I wouldn’t say the 35 series Bonanzas under 50k are the bottom of the barrel in terms of cross country utility. On the contrary, they are actually a great value and efficient traveling machine. The Bonanzas under 50k tend to be the older “E series” Bonanzas 1947-1956 featuring one of several variants of E185 or E225 pressure carbureted engines.
The E engines utilized a splined crankshaft that leaves owners with only a couple of propeller options. Originally outfitted with an electric variable pitch (in manual control) or constant speed (when using governor control) Roby R200 wooden propeller, followed by a wooden Beech B200 propeller that was then outfitted with aluminum blades to create the prolific Beech 215 electric propeller. This propeller was eventually retrofitted to pretty much all early bonanza models featuring the splined crankshaft engines, and has zero Airworthiness Directives against it to this day.
As time went on, early Bonanza owners decided that they envied the pilots who flew behind hydraulic constant speed propellers due to the instantaneous pitch changes that can be made with oil hydraulic pressure (the electric motors that changed pitch on the 215 propellers were quite slow). Hartzell decided to rise to the occasion and developed the monstrosity that is the HC-A2V20 constant speed hydraulic propeller. To solve the solid splined crankshaft issue with no channel for oil supply to the hub, Hartzell developed a transfer collar oil transfer unit that transferred oil from the engine to the propeller hub. An elegant solution that was poorly designed and has caused many issues to this day. A costly recurring 500 hr/5 yr AD inspection has caused even more headaches and led to many owners seeking out a later variant that eliminated the AD.
The lack of propeller options-coupled with old engines that are considered outdated and difficult to work on (misguided on both counts) has led to the E series Bonanzas being extremely undervalued in the used aircraft market. Prior to the COVID price inflation, these planes were selling for sub 50k all day long. Now equivalent aircraft hover between 50-70k.
Those who do stumble onto this ancient gem of an a aircraft will find a robust and beautifully balanced flying machine that performs quite well given the horse power and possesses an outstanding range of speeds from Cherokee landing speeds to early Mooney cruise speeds-allowing excellent cross country travel coupled with impressive short field performance at low to moderate airport elevations.
There, now you know more than you ever cared to about the capable but misunderstood and wrongly maligned E series Bonanza-the best value and best kept secret in general aviation.
Sources: Lew Gage’s book Owning and Operating the E series Bonanza, Larry Ball’s Those Incomparable Bonanzas, and 6 years of maintaining and operating 1947-1951 Beechcraft Bonanzas.

That means registering all your cows, keeping track of a lot more papers and somehow getting them to the voting ballots, or else you're non-compliant. This was great. I'd love a full video on the Pietenpol at some point, if possible. It seems like a wildly accessible plane on the surface, and I'm wondering if there are terrible, terrible secrets hidden in there somewhere.

I vote for Pipistrel Sinus Flex or Pipistrel Taurus Electro in the higher price tier videos. Some of the coolest planes I've ever seen. The former can be a fuel-efficient cross-country flyer AND a backcountry flyer AND you can cut the engine to glide AND you can swap the glide wings for shorter wings for better performance/storage AND it can have a ballistic parachute. The latter is a crazy-ahead-of-it's-time self-launch all-electric glider from 2011 that even has a solar trailer so it can fly for "free" with zero emissions. It's also practical because it fits in a small, easily towable trailer. Much cheaper than renting a hangar and you can drive it anywhere!

In the under 50k list, I feel like you might have overlooked the Beechcraft A23 Musketeer. I would love to see a cost analysis video pointing out why it might not have made your list...or just a cost analysis video on the A23 in general

For cross country? Too slow. 105 knots is too slow for traveling. Especially for a 8-9 gal fuel burn and Beechcraft repair bills. A23 was built to be a trainer and that's what it was good for. Today is still good as a trainer if you don't mind paying the beech premium.

I wonder what a Mig 23 would cost to run.
I imagine that scheduled maintenance hanger and fuel would would be significantly more than the initial purchase price. Not to mention any “unscheduled” or preventative maintenance. Also landing fees where applicable.

Sadly you will not find a BD-4C anywhere near 50k first it’s $40k just for the kit without an engine or anything else, secondly there are very. Few actually flying bd-4C models (maybe only one actually in US). You can however find the older bd-4b though in that price range.

You think you’ll ever do a video on the Ikarus C42? Not sure how popular they are in the US (live in Scotland), think they are marketed under the name Cyclone over there. I done my first solo in one a week ago so would be neat to see a video on it haha.

Alas, the Vans aircraft market puts you over the 50k threshold for the cross-country category. Mayhaps a Vans RV-3 can be found for a less-shiny penny.

I don't know about these days, but pre covid I got my hands on every aircraft I owned under 30k. The magical words to hear if your looking for a second hand aircraft, expired annual, and estate sale. More often than not you can be sure major ADs have been tended to with a little homework. Much of the other items that might need tending to can be inexpensive especially with owner assisted maintenance. Beech 23's 19's and the musketeer, are effectively the same frame none suffered the indignity of being school aircraft many have bi lateral boarding doors, and finally compliments of Beechcraft's nature they all enjoyed the corrosion resistance of epoxy coating and anodizing. I am still surprised at the price tag they go for comparatively to their total time. One thing to avoid is the O-346. There is nothing inherently wrong with it but in performance and maintenance terms your better off stepping down to a 320 or up to a 360. E2D 320's can literally be purchased inspected from salvage.
