Flashback: Augustine lectures about habitable planet K-23, meets woman questioning his book's authenticity. Present: Augustine checks missions, sees familiar face Sully on Aether crew. Sully, pregnant, haunted by nightmares, receives strange signal. Alarm startles Augustine, finds scared girl hiding. Tries to contact help, fails. Prepares dinner for girl named Iris. Despite attempts to contact Aether, no success. Aether struggles with communication, returns from mission with groundbreaking discovery: K-23 can support human life.
Iris observes Augustine during his blood transfusions, joins him under the observatory roof, gazing at stars.in this space movie, Flashback: Woman confronts Augustine for not returning calls, scolds him for neglecting relationships. Present: Augustine finds sick birds, realizes contaminated air has reached them early. Decides to head to Lake Hazen for a stronger antenna to contact Aether. Augustine and Iris prepare to leave, bundle up, and head out on a jetski. On Aether, crew deals with boredom until alarm signals wrong direction. They reroute using signals from K-23 but face challenges. Augustine and Iris find crashed plane, discover a dying man and a scared girl. Augustine fulfills man's plea with a heavy heart, flooded with memories of his past.
In this movie, On Aether, Maya does ultrasound, revealing Sully's having a girl. Crew excitedly brainstorms names. Augustine and Iris investigate distant bunker, spend night there. Bunker floods, sinking into melting ice. Augustine saves Iris, loses jetski. They share last food, brave snowstorm. Wolves approach, Augustine scares them off but loses sight of Iris. Surprised to see woman from past memories, realizes it's Iris. They reach Lake Hazen, try contacting Aether. Aether hurt by asteroids, communication breaks. Stuck in space, uncertain of next move.
Crew assesses ship's damage, Maya, Sully, Ade repair communication system outside. Maya feels scared, gets injured by debris, doesn't make it. Crew saddened, Augustine reveals Earth's ruin, suggests going to K-23. Tom wants to find his family, decides to go back to Earth with Mitchell. They say goodbye to Aether crew. Sully admires Augustine's work, unaware of familial connection. Aether loses signal, Ade and Sully resolve to return to K-23.
