this movie came out in 1999, kinda like the matrix. i watched it after the matrix and honestly thought it was even better. but the matrix's fight scenes and simpler story made it more popular.

This movie is not about parallel realities. It’s about virtual worlds within virtual worlds. On another note, there’s another adaptation of this story. It was a 2-part made for TV (German) movie called “World on a Wire”.

Daniel F. Galouye had written this story under the title. SIMULACRON. Nowadays there are several novel versions and movies done after it. Here in Germany for example WORLD ON A WIRE ( WELT AM DRAHT ) done by Fassbinder. He just had put the story´s location to Munich and exchanged a couple of names. THIS version here is one of the more modern ones.
I always liked the concept of a Programmer with a God Complex trying to manipulate a world of sentient avatars for his own pleasure and the intriguing way the heroes had stopped him. And that decades before the Video Game THE SIMS came on the market :)

Yes, the German movie version was so popullar in the Germanic Culture Zone that even the first translation of the novel by GOLDMANN VERLAG had been called WELT AM DRAHT. You can find it in the Net if interested. Years later there was an improved translation done by HEYNE VERLAG as SIMULACRON - 3
