and this year it will most definitely be reignited 🔥 can’t wait!!! 2 more days!
@Landen Denisenko You are absolutely right! While many of the French embraced First Nations people and even procreated and learned to live in harmony with them, the British ramsacked First Nation villages and imposed their will by eliminating everyone who stood in their way! Such fine upstanding citizens those British were! Much to be proud of!
I mean the base of this rivalry is French vs english. This rivalry has so many layers to it, it’ll never be gone. Other rivalries will come and go, not this one. It’ll be around forever.
French 💪😤
@@jackie2000 English
@Coding Crusaderoh ferme ta gueule
@Coding Crusader you sound like an American, whenever you hear France you think pansy.
@Landen Denisenko The English were more cruel. They desecrated and eliminated everyone and everything that stood in their way! I have First Nation blood in my ancestry but identity as French Canadian.
A rivalry older than the country itself
The Derby Days rivalry between Toronto FC and Montreal Limpact explained the rivalry better. Imagine that. 🥱
They should do more of these NHL Rivalry history. with other Teams
I'd love to see Boston-Montreal for obvious reasons. But if we're talking all time rivalries including defunct teams, the Battle of Quebec is up there. It was more then just a rivalry between two teams, it was a war between rival cities (Quebec City is the provincial capital, Montreal is Quebec's largest city), two political ideologies (Nords for Quebec separatism, Montreal for those who wish to remain with Canada and Parti Quebecois vs Quebec Liberal Party) and two completing breweries (Molson Brewery for the Habs and Carling O'Keefe owned the Nordiques. ironically, Molson now owns Carling O'Keefe's).
Series won since the 04-05 lockout:
Montreal - 2008 (1), 2010 (2), 2014 (2), 2015 (1), 2020 (1)
Toronto - n/a
But they didn’t
@@TheBasileman Overtime in Game 7 ... every hockey player's dream and nightmare...
At least they are consistent. Lol it is so hard being a Leaf fan.
Cups won since lockout.

Imagine thinking series won is something to boast about. Scabs fans desperate to cling to anything these days. 😂
Keep making more of the Chronicle serious we love it!!!
I have to compliment the production side of this video!!!!! Nice touch with the dramatic background music !!!!! GO HABS GO!!!!
Kovalev running over that weasel Tucker was a thing of beauty. Watching that clip and the one when Bouillon cleaned his clock in '06 always makes me smile.
Great video! Loved it. No greater joy than growing up a francophone in Northern Ontario and seeing loyalties pretty much split down the middle between Leafs and Habs! Glad I chose to support the most successful NHL team in history! :)
As an Anglo who grew up in the same place (now living in Montreal), I share the exact same sentiment, my friend!
The passion and rivalry between these two teams is still alive, which i'm glad that it is, because i think it brings out the best in the two teams and their players which makes for hockey that you won't see anywhere else or action that is like no other and helps hockey to progress, by making a better product for everyone including the fans. And maybe it can bring out others to get them into hockey which is good for the fan base of the N.H.L and their teams and players. Which a rivalry can only help by improving hockey by taking it to the next level and preparing it for the future of the game.
So far in my life the Habs Vs Bruins has been the more interesting rivalry to watch. But I love Playing the Leafs because a lot of my Family and friends are Toronto fans so it's fun to trash talk each other.
I love this! I hope Sportsnet continues more of this style of documentary.
Awesome series! Would love to see more of this style of doc on Sportsnet!
Habs came back from a 3-1 lead to the Leafs!
Habs > Laughs
I'm an Avs fan, I have nothing to do with this quarrel, but I am SO STOKED to see this all Canadian division go off!
Go AVS Go
Great video man! More of these please Sporstnet!
1967 < 1993
I mean at this point it's not comparing good things, it's comparing who has it less bad xD
How old were you in 1993? Just curious.
@@mrbiggs36 I can't speak for him but I was 32! :) Who here can say their hockey team won all four years of high school? :-)
@@mrbiggs36 how old were you in 1967? Just curious.
Nice video style, hope there are more coming out!
Absolutely loving these vids! Keep it up man 👍👍👍
Great video. Keep these going
Great vid, I hope to see more!
Always Love a New Video!
Amazing video!! So many incredible facts😍😍
The editing is incredible 👍😍
Great stuff, keep it up!
Keep these videos coming!!!
Great video!
Montreal inferiority complex is clearly evident in the comments section. And it's hilarious.
24-13 and soon to be King of the Losers in the Guinness Book of World Records of Futility for the Maple Losers says different! :)
great video!
All I’m gonna say it 24🏆🏆🏆
these old photos are fire btw kinda hard to find crisp ones like these
Rivalry Habs-Leafs & Habs-Bruins haven't been the same for a while. Hope either rivalry reignite again the near future.
i grew up watching this rivalry as a Montreal kid...but truthfully...i loved the Leafs too!..this is where i got my love of hockey!
i grew up watching montreal sweep the lowly leafs in the playoffs in 1978 and again in 1979. that legendary dynasty habs team leafs fans can only dream of having who dominated and won 4 straight cups has a dedicated dressing room in the heart of Toronto at the HHOF! How sweet it is! lol
More videos like this please
good video
I hate that there is barely an on ice rivalry. It's french/english and geographic. I mean as a leafs fan i get thrilled when they beat the habs but it is out of joy and not competition. Hopefully we get a playoff series this year, a very real chance.
This rivalry transcends hockey, it’s about french vs english for a lot of people
Can't wait!
This rivalry Is special because its beyond hockey it two cities who don't like each other the french the english always trying to be better than the other this rivalry can literally get both cities to watch both cities play each other in any sport it can cricket and both cities will watch just to best the other no matter what
It's the greatest rivalry - hopefully they meet in the playoffs
Maybe to the eyes of Torontonians. We consider the Nordiques and Bruins to be our greatest rivals and it's not even close.
@@4inchesofpleasure sure you do.
Nah. Habs and bruins is the greatest by FAR.
Toronto last Stanley Cup 67
MTL cups since 1967 (10) 🏆
The rivalry is probably the closest in North America to the heated ones you see in other continents. Mainly cause this is a proxy between Anglo speaking Canadians and French speaking Canadians.
Toronto hasn't been relevant in over 50 years. They aren't a rival of the Habs anymore. The Bruins have become the Habs biggest rivals
As a huge Habs fan we hate the bruins more 😂
Sure. Montreal can't stop obsessing over Toronto in practically all walks of life but "wE hAtE tHe bRuInS"
Leafs fans think they have a rivalry with the Bruins but the reality is Bruins fans laugh at them! They see them as the Toronto Chokers, the Makemelaughs, the Maple Losers etc. lol
@@TMBpk It's a French vs English thing. Everybody knows it! English think they are so smart yet majority can only communicate in 1 language and the hockey team they cheer for is about to enter the NHL Book of Records for Futility tied with NYR 54 years removed from Lord Stanley's Mug. Congrats on such a wonderful achievement Leafies! lol
@@rickmartin4886 it has nothing to do with that lmao. There are probably more English speaking Canadiens fans than there are french. I'm one of them. Stop trying to hype up a rivalry between french and English Canada. It's stupid and the only ones that seem to care about it are the French.
@@joshbuchanan8541 I presume you’ve never seen the movie Rocket? You’re oblivious if you don’t understand the prejudice that existed against the flying Frenchmen in the days of Rocket Richard, Clarence Campbell Conn Smythe and the Richard Riot! Clearly, Canadian History wasn’t your forte! Why do you think French people have never accepted the monarchy?
Toronto would like to think they're Montreal's biggest rivals... Its not even close! The Bruins are absolutely freaking hated in Montreal!
K sure
Life long Habs fan here. Don't really know how to say this but Toronto has never been a rival as long as I've been a fan. Not really sure why Leaf fans keep saying this. Boston is our rival and always will be. Followed closely by the old No dics
And here we goooo
It starts this Wednesday let’s go
Canada's team vs Quebec's team
Maple Leafs are truly compostable! Good thing! COVID City's team vs Quebec's team.
It’s a fresh rivalry again
I don't really get this rivalry. For real old senior citizens that can remember the 70s and earlier ok that I can get. However from 1980 until 2023, they have met 1 time in the playoffs. in 43 years they have had one, ONE, playoff series! For me to have a rivalry you have to meet in the playoffs and that team has to have eliminated your team many times. This has only happened one time in almost a half century. The regular season means nothing, there are no elimination games in the regular season. Only senior citizens remember when these 2 teams had meaningful playoff games against each other.
Awesome
Nice kovalev!
For real, some sweet chin music!
Ok! I thought it was The Flames vs The Oilers or The Leafs vs The Sens. You can tell i'm a NHL newbie.😮
It’s gonna be a good year for hockey
GO HABS GO!!!
Go Leafs Go!
Aaaand they are both my favourite teams. Change my mind XD
This rivalry ended in 1967
Anyone feel like Toronto Montreal and Boston are a rival trio
Not at all. Montreal swept Toronto back to back times in 1978 and 1979 playoffs. Leafs have not been rivals with Montreal when it counts since 1967.
@@rickmartin4886 well the game on Wednesday might change that
@@teg2007 hopefully, Montreal will have Corey Perry in the lineup to add even more sandpaper! :)
WOAH - Both teams "traded cups back and forth"? How disingenuous - if you wanted to highlight the rivalry, highlight the dynasties (and yes the Leafs could lay claim to an early 60s dynasty) but the Habs won 5 in a row and then 4 out of five years (65, 66, 68, 69 - everyone talks about the Leafs last cup in 67 but everyone forgets the Habs won 2 before and 2 after) so no they did not "trade cups back and forth"
Doobie Bros 'What a fool beeelieves...'
Damn Leafs stopped a second historic 5 staight Cups! Habs only team to win 5 in a row! So close to doing it twice. Loser Leafs can only dream of such greatness! :)
I love how much we hate each other. This season is going to be bonkers.
Can't wait to see the Charmin Fab Four take more punishment all year long! It will be sweet indeed. Crybaby Auston, get used to it! :)
Canadian division let’s goooooo! Leafs fan here. MTL and our beef is fun. It’s Boston we really really BOTH hate
Greatest rivalry ever
Go Leafs Go!!
GO HABS GO
Teams haven’t played against each other in the playoffs since 1979. Stop it, it’s not a rivalry anymore.
Its going to be, again. Assuming you think the Habs are good enough to make the Canadian division playoffs.
Go Leafs Go
leafs always beat Pisston Brains and Montloser Toliet seats
Used to be one of the greatest rivalries ever but now it’s leads and bruins and bruins beat them every game
Toronto Maple Leads
Enjoy this season with Chara out of town and krug 😂😂😂 no defence at all hahahhahaha
Lol original six is a rivalry fool Bruins trash had to come later
@@ljd1031 bruins are original six?
No disrespect but are the Bruins anyone’s rival anymore. Kinda seems like the Bruins best days are behind them. Not that I wanted Krug to stay in Boston but when I see the Bruins just wouldn’t pay him, that’s really confusing. Then letting chara go. I mean other than Carlo and mcavoy and to a lesser extent gryzlyk, who’s manning the blue line in Boston.
I hope the hatred is reignited this year! GO LEAFS GO!
I've been hating the #2 team since 1967! :)
3:00 hummmm offside?
@ ScotiaNorth @ NorthNHL :: itTheNorth !! itTheChamp !!
Only Canadian teams for 42 years from 1938? In fairness to the Canucks, I think that should be 32.
Hi
I’m a leaf fan and I hate the habs more than anything that is called a fresh rival
I hate the Bruins more, and there's more history there. Nothing beats Habs-Bruins rivalry.
I grew up a Habs fan in Toronto and the games I looked forward to the most is the Bruins.
Lol sure
92-93 was the closest to them playing in the playoffs if Kings didn't make it to the finals
God Bless Wayne Gretzky! :)
4:54 but doesn't that mean Toronto won more games?
Wednesday Night Rivals
Can we please let vaccinated fans in the arena to watch the games in toronto...im old enough to say i dont wanna wait another 40 years to be able to watch these two rivals play in the playoffs...
What, and no mention of the fact that Montreal Canadian players refused to enlist for their country at the height of war. Yet, many TML's in fact did. If you ask me that's where the true rivalry peaked. Get your research right or get the hell out of here.
There was a lot of stars from other teams who did not go to war, but if i recall Montreal sent 9 or 10 players 1942. how many did the leafs send? There is no rivalry, both teams just hate each other. And the Leaf fans are the worst, all i hear is next year, next year .funny last year the Habs made the play-offs did the leafs ?
@@russellrosebrugh5830 it was the star francophone players that elected not to go though it seemed the Leafs would have been outmatched they managed 2 out play Montreal throughout the war winning a couple of cups in spite of the Maple Leafs losing their star players.
Yikes is that true?
Go habs go
The Habs are the Leafs real rivals, sure Ottawa always loses to the leafs, and Boston has won a ton of series against the leafs, but the Habs and Leafs went back an forth
no they didn't. your pathetic leafs were swept 4-0 by habs in 1978 and 1979 playoffs.
Add another Habs win to this
Imagine the Leafs automatically got all Ontario kids on their team like the whining francophones over in Queerbec did back in the day
They had this rule in place because the english teams didn’t want to draft french speaking players because of the language barrier dummy!
@@charleslevesque8603 at least someone knows their stuff😂😂😂
@@charleslevesque8603 if they didn't want to..... then why did they need a rule monsiour?
"Rivalry" exist only in deluded Leafs fans minds. The Habs & their fans would have to try really hard to care less
Lmao because you speak for everyone right? Get your head out of your ass. Go leafs go.
wow you must not have met any habs fans outside of yourself 🤣 the worst kind of fans ffs
It actually seems like the rivalry is more habs driven than leafs. Habs fans put the habs ahead of religion.
It's funny how wrong you are. Leafs fans obviously care much more about the boston-leafs rivalry right now anyway. Montreal, on the other hand, seems to care a lot more
