Yeah, I respect 24 cups. I was 9 when the Flyers last won a cup and I've concluded that I won't likely live long enough to see them win another. Oh, I'll live long enough for them to reach the Finals another five or six times, just not win;-)
What is crazy about the team is many of the early players had day jobs. They would work their 8 or more hours a day, get home, eat, and head off to play a game. Incredible players. Too bad there are no English, and French subtitles for the documentary.
Pro athletes in the US had to get off season jobs, once upon a time. In fact when asked what winning the World Series meant, Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees replied, it meant not having to get a job in the off season.
As a young kid growing up in North Jersey the Canadiens set a standard of excellence. The Flyers and Bruins owned the early 70’s. But the later part of elementary school the Canadiens became bigger than life and I think the model the Islanders & Oilers would follow...

I wonder if they gave him direction regarding the tone & he attempted to comply but it backfired. But of course I do not know for certain. Maybe he was nursing a hangover.
Love. It!!! Lol at young Scotty Bowman. Nice to hear J. Demers and Mr. Gainey talk in both French and English. It’s always amusing when people speak in a foreign language and slip English words into the conversation.

Agreed. I live in Quebec and understand French fairly well, but some of the speakers had marbles in their mouths. The Closed Captioning unfortunately isn't very good either!
The Green Bay Packers should be added to that list. World Champions in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1996, 2010. Also put the Boston Celtics on the list. Seemed to gloss over whole eras by talking around the topic but not penetrating within it. Left out key players entirely, like Doug Harvey, Steve Shutt, Chris Chelios, Claude Provost. Choice of interviewees was odd.
You could have easily has a 4 Hour Documentary and included the people that you named above. I can think of a few people off those 1970's Stanley Cup Winning Teams that I would have like to have heard from.
That brawl at 17:57 is some savage shit. Stick fights, 2-on-1s, etc -- the pre-television era of hockey was probably unreal to watch, in addition to the legendary skill players -- I wish more footage existed from those days, and that the stuff does exist were easier to access and remaster...
Yes. The doctor knew Morenz had blood clots, yet this doctor said he would start to work on the issue in the morning. Of course, Morenz died during the night. It makes one wonder how long the doctor knew about those blood clots.
I get that you have French speaking Montreal/Quebec City and over the years the bitter fight for succession as a province. But when you're producing a documentary which may be seen beyond Quebec, it behooves you to provide subtitles so that those like myself can have a better understanding of the development of that franchise. Fortunately I did understand bits and pieces of the French being spoken. It was cool in the beginning when there was translation. I'm a ardent hockey fan (L.A. Kings) so I stuck with it because if the English spoken between interviews/descriptions of the teams from various players in their respective eras.
i loved this resume of the montreal canadiens. the only problem i see is that the parts where the players and coachs and other montreal representatives who spoke french did not have a translation or caption for english speaking habs fans. i speak both languages so i understood it all but for those who don't it takes away from the beauty of this resume. it takes away viewings from this video and doesn't allow it to be seen by those who don't understand french.
That wasn't much of a "wilderness" they were in following The Rocket's last Stanley Cup win in 1960 and their next cup in 1964-65. Over the regular season in those years they finished first three times and third once.
Phil Esposito scored 76 goals in one season in the early 70's for the Bruins . That summer he had to get a summer job to support his family . Apparently that is a true story .
That was the 1971 Season when Montreal's Battle Cry seemed to be stop Orr and Esposito and then the rest of The Boston Bruins. As a Bruins Fan, I hated that.
76 & 76 ...that has to be one of the greatest seasons for a player. Boston had so many guys score over 20 goals.... Sure with expansion the new teams were not as good but still a feat for Phil.
Habs were the team of the French and Irish Catholics and the Jews. The image now is regal, but they were outcasts -- I think the big wigs hoped they would go away. The Bruins are painted as super enemies, but they are just real tough rivals with a lot in common--with mutual respect. .
This was a Mild let down with interesting sections bot grand omissions . Doug Harvey and Plante barley get a mention defense wins cups . The habs also had the best trio of defensemen on one team the big three. Ferber was his usual soft and arrogant self.
It is remarkable that if you ask people who they are, the answer "Canadien/Canadian" is more likely in Quebec than in the rest of Canada. This is constantly shown in census. At that time, Canadien was used by French Canadians to mean exclusively French Canadians. Today the word is more "inclusive" in French to use the politically correct jargon of your leaders while Quebecois would be narrower.. But definitely ice hockey had a huge political component at the time. Today the Canadiens barely have any French Canadians in it..... in fact you have 7 Europeans and only 2 Quebecois--- not a single Quebec Anglophone! It is a different team and sport.
I was badly spoiled as a kid in the 1970's then during the Patrick Roy era.. I just took it for granted the Habs would win the Cup all the time or at least be contenders.. Now i've reserved myself to thinking i'll probably never see them win another Cup again in my lifetime
Great story , although when the team comes out to the ice and the annoncer says " voici votre Camadiens Du Montreal " . Well francofones really take that to heart, and they really believe that its thier team . Such as 'WE payed too much for him' (even though u or i didnt pay a cent.) When in fact a Francofone has never owned this team. See what im sayin ? When Goff Molson says " the GM and or coach has to be french speaking ( no matter how unpopular ) he is just appeasing the franco community. And therefore will not win a Stanly cup for a long time with that type of backward thinking

hate to repeat but the absence of subtitles is an outrage. for english speaking hockey fans it borders on a criminal act
Likewise French subtitles when they are speaking French.
The Canadiens have Hab-it of choking since 1993
1967 Leafs fans
Last time the cup was in Canada
Was that, the year, they traded Mike Keane, Patrick Roy?
No Roy left in 1995....using his mid-finger salute to management
Choking ? Like when they upset the Bruins in 7 ? Or the Pens in 7 or the Caps in 7 . What about 2021 the Leafs in 7 ? Haters gonna hate
How hard would it have been to incorporate captions in English and French?
1970-71 the year they weren't favored to win the Stanley Cup they did just that
It's funny how terrible they got when other teams got a chance at some of the French Canadian talent and there was more than 6 teams
