    After watching the video, I drilled 4 tiny holes from each side and sprayed the Deoxit. It worked and my Marantz 2238B works likes new. Thanks for the video.

    I install the relay on a base, so it can easily be removed without soldering. That way the relay can swiftly be cleaned from time to time (like ones a year). I never use abrasive paper, instead I use a thin sheet of carton and a little metal polish compound. I remove excessive compound with a paper tissue and a drop of deoxit spray. Contacts can be polished to a mirror finish so they stay clean very long.

    This is great video. I have been having problems with an Onkyo stereo amplifier that is about 40 years old. It takes several minutes before the left channel begins to work, whereas the right channel works right away. I've DeOxit all of the pots but the problem still exists. When I saw this video, it gives me another approach as to what the problem is. The relay is tucked away in very close quarters and I will have to remove a pcb to get to it. Here goes, and thanks again!

    Thank you so much for this. Sorted my NAD relays out today, working perfectly now.

    You can also use just plain photocopying paper with Deoxit or contact cleaner.

    I am making a speaker switch to disconnect a set of speakers on a hifi system, i want to use relays just like this. what should i order ? I wanted ones that would be used in amps for this application . Thanks John

    Great video, I will be trying mine. I have a Pioneer SA 7300 and the relay chatters for a very short time when I switch it on, could this be a faulty relay or something else?

  • @oturgator
    @oturgator Před 5 lety +2

    These are 4-5USD components, now for PCB mount old relays, there are base adaptors so that if this new relay gives you trouble in the future, you just swap it. This cleaning will remove the protective coating and the oxidation will come back faster than before.

    • @redrobbosworkshop
      @redrobbosworkshop  Před 5 lety +9

      Sure, but 'faster than before' needs context as these units are often many decades old. You can expect a few more years good service after cleaning. You cannot expect the full life of a new relay....
      By all means replace with a new relay if you wish, though of course you need to select the correct type and pretty much all relays available will need pins removing at the least to fit these 30+ year old amplifiers.

    Hi , thanks for the video , i need help , i have a marantz sr 73 amplifier and suddenly since few months , i can hear static sounds in left speaker , sometimes it becomes really loud , i checked the power supply , changed the cables , everything seems to be good ! Now i guess its a relay because the amplifier is more than 20 years old ! I dont wanna get rid of this beautiful amplifier , this is one of the best in the world , best sound because its made in japan ! The problem now is , theres no one to fix this in my city and also support from marantz is over as they discontinued this model long back ! How can i clean or change the relay ? Can you please help me out ?

    Hi i this question is nott relative to the vid
    ....i have a loudspeaker amplifier and it suddenly started to go into protection mode on relatively low volumes ( Compared to my loudspeakers ....the knob is barely 1/4 the way up ) ....and i checked for short circuits but my speakers worked fine on another amplifier...
    What might be my problem ?
    Thank u in advance.

    Hi, i really apreciate your recomendation, right now I'm taking off the relays of my onkyo to do this, I hope it works, I thinks it is the relay my problem because when a hit it a little the sound come back again.
    Another question, my receiver is a onkyi htr 510, it is a 2003 machine, I wonder if I should recap all? it is only 14 years old, is it enough time to recap? so I don't know if this years could have affect the performance, I say that because I'm not the first owner, I got it 4 months ago.
    Thanks.

    • @rjones2209
      @rjones2209 Před 5 lety

      Considering it's not very old, just recap the big supply ones and any audio output ones.

    Caution with the pulsed power supply, AMU-6004A, in the metal enclosure. also the AM-U06 amp uses this PS. The small transformer burns a hole in the small circuit board. I had to rewire from schematic and replaced the 2SC2335 transistors with ST10037, and also the trigger diode LS2039. I used a DB diac, which worked well.seems the aging glue shorts were the trans wires are soldered to the board.

    How did you get the relay out after using the solder pump? When I did it there were still tiny bits that held it in and I was scared the PCB was going to be damaged if I simply pulled it.

    Thanks for the vid. Could this be the cause for my left side going in and out, mostly out as time passes?

    • @redrobbosworkshop
      @redrobbosworkshop  Před 5 lety

      Hi Harry, Yes quite likely the cause. Otherwise it could be one of the amplifier switches such as input or speaker selector. Some spray contact cleaner can help with those.

    My pioneer amplifier has dirty relay contacts. Just giving it a little tap with my finger makes it work again. However it's a logistical nightmare to remove the board to get access to desoldering the relays. I'm going to have to perform an institute clean. There's plenty of room around the relays and can see only 2 lugs holding the cover to the base.

    • @redrobbosworkshop
      @redrobbosworkshop  Před 5 lety

      Yep that should work fine is you can get access and have enough room.

    I have SONY p99x with built in equalizer.When I turn on my unit, it first makes a click sound when power button is pressed, then it makes a second click sound after 1 or 2 seconds. Today it did not make a second click and is not producing any sound. Interestingly, Its turning on, all the lights and buttons are normally functioning. Equalizer lights are moving up and down with music BUT no sound. I noticed that when it makes the second click, sound is produced, when no 2nd click, no sound. What can be the fault?
    What is producing that 2nd click, capacitor, relay or else?

    • @JohnHopeART
      @JohnHopeART Před 3 lety

      Try and practice soldering on a throw away test board, cleaning them insitu is a nightmare, a steady hand and a good desolder pump will make short work of it, make sure you use flux when you resolder the contacts.

    This method is a relay killer, never use abrasive paper, the life of the relay decreased dramatically after this type of "restoring". To clean the contacts, use simple printer paper impregnated with alcohol or acetone, it must be rubbed until contact shines! The best solution in this case is to buy a new one.

    I don't understand what's happening at first in the video. The relay seems to have been already removed.... then not. What's the soldering thing about? Can't you just pull it out?

    • @redrobbosworkshop
      @redrobbosworkshop  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi, It's a soldered rather than socket based relay as most will be for audio equipment. It's shown unsoldered at the start of the video simply to give a clear shot of the device.

    • @echt114
      @echt114 Před 5 lety +1

      Does that mean that I couldn't clean it in any meaningful way without going through the soldering process? Since my first comment, I've seen another example where a guy popped a plastic cover off and ran some paper through it. The model I'd be working with is a 1990-ish Onkyo receiver. I've not even opened it yet. Just wondering what's possible for someone who's never done this kind of thing before.

    • @redrobbosworkshop
      @redrobbosworkshop  Před 5 lety +1

      @@echt114 You can pop the cover, but sometimes as in this unit the relay sits in a cramped space and it's easier just to remove it and replace once cleaned. If you have good access and you can pop the cover easily, leave the unit soldered in place.

    • @echt114
      @echt114 Před 5 lety +1

      OK that's some incentive to open it up and check. Hopefully the access is good. Thanks for the quick replies.
