    2:20 The circuit for the protection relay is designed simply to detect any DC voltage on the center line of the Amp. This line connects to the speaker through the relay contacts. The most common failure in these circuits is a failed electrolytic capacitor in the circuit. Typical the symptoms will be a longer delay before the speakers are connected and later a buzzing or rattling sound as the relay is energized. (Mechanical from the relay, not the speakers.) Replacing this capacitor will normally solve the problem. If the relay is activating and the sound becomes noisy, it is likely that the relay contacts need cleaning, or if they are severely pitted, replace the relay, but do not forget to check the capacitor.

      My SR7011 is making these relay bouncing noises, seemingly randomly. Do you know where the capacitor is or how I can locate it?

    Great video. I need to make this repair on a preamp. Your process was very clear and sensible and the audio sounds good.

    Great video. I would like to add that I would secure the relay mounting stud prior to soldering the pins and wires. If the relay isn't completely flat against the PC board, the contacts or traces can be compromised.

    After 15 years working at at Hughes on line/engineering, I'm a fan of solderwik instead of a sucker on boards like this. I know it's more costly than the sucker but I prefer the end result and since I'm not working on this stuff every single day, I don't mind the extra cost

    Contact points can be made new and shiny with a thin sheet of carton and a little metal polish compound on it. Just insert the compound between the contacts and move it around with the sheet of thin carton. Remove excessive compound with a paper tissue eventually with a drop of deoxit.

    Hello Sir.... Nice video also love the screwdriver set 👍,,,, question I currently have one of these Marantz and just lost my sound on both sides would this relay cos this problem? Thanks

  • @swinde
    @swinde Před 5 lety

    3:37 ... This same relay can be used for the Marantz 250. However the relay has to be opened and four wires have to be swapped for it to work. It is not a perfect fit on the circuit board but it can be installed. The 250 had an oddball relay (no longer available) with actuator coil connected to the terminals that normally are connected to the moving contacts.

      I just bought a 250. I'm waiting for it. Do you have any details on the "four wires have to be swapped?" Any videos I an reference for this?

    Are the heads of your Wiha tool set magnetized for easy pickup of small screws?

    Thank you for making this video! I have Ad Com GFA 555 hooked up with B&W speakers. Should I add a speaker protection circuit to my amplifier or not? Also, I have heard that protection circuit clamps the power and reduces sound sonic and dynamics

    I just inherited from my father, a Marantz MA 530, was looking at it and if it's a decent unit I wanted to try my hand at restoring it. In your opinion, is this amp worth the time/effort or should I just bin it? :)

    very helpful I think 2240 has a similar issue I have intermittent channel cutting out, but the technician never seem to run into the issue when they are looking into it. I sometimes turn it off then on and it is working again. Thanks again

    Question, I am a newbie with the technical issue. I have an Anthem p5 that has one of the channel suddenly stopped working. I was unplugging the audio cables from my receiver (Stupid me didn’t turn off the amplifier) and the cables touched tv stand metal and i heard loud humming noise. I wonder what caused it to stop working? Anthrm p5 doesn’t have a fuse and will reset itself with the PTC.

    Hey Mark. Would the relay be the cause of a loud bang through the speakers when I turn my Marantz unit off? Even with the volume turned down. I now have to turn the speakers off before I shut power off so it doesn't blow my speakers. Please help. Thanks. It seems as though the caps are not being discharged in some way.??

      @Blueglow  Před 8 lety +1

      +Pete Schreiber Could be one of a couple of things. 1st off make sure your amp is biased properly and that the DC off-set isn't out of whack, it can cause this. I have videos on that here. 2nd. I'd rebuild the power supply board by replacing all caps on it and also replace the relay. All can be suspect in causing your issue.

    Can you tell me what the first video is you made with this camera? Because I don't think its the camera. You have videos that are clear, you have videos with a little of the effect and you have videos with a lot of this. I still think It a re-sampling issue. It could be that your camera is using 48Khz but your editing software re-samples it to 44. It could also be that there are missing video frames and the audio is being processed by the software to sync with the video. And it can also be youtube re-encoding the video and sound. But I can back track for you if you give me the first youtube video with this cam.
    Believe it or not there are audio cd's out there with the same issue. It always drives me a bit crazy that most of the people can't hear it :-) If you would use your spectrum analyser you can probable see it. Thanks for the video's, hope to build a small EL34 amp this year. Take Care
