    Today I’ll show you how to make a pom pom without a pom pom maker!
    Pom poms add cheer and whimsy to every project. They make great accessories, and they’re the cherry on top of a knitted hat. They also make great stress balls!
    Thankfully, making a pom pom is not hard. If you can use a pair of scissors, then you can make a pom pom!
    All you’ll need are a pair of sharp scissors, cardboard (an old tissue or cereal box works great), yarn, and a can or a jar to help you trace a circle. That’s it. No commercial pom pom maker necessary!
    The secret to make the perfect pom pom is to use lots of yarns when wrapping your donut, make sure your scissors are super sharp, and finally, to use your donuts as a tracer to help you cut a perfectly round shape. So, good luck and happy pom pom-ing!

    I've made pompoms this way for years...2 things I learned from you though, to improve my pompoms moving forward:
    1. I used half the circle and my poms were half as fluffy before so now I'll use this 3/4 cardboard. Thx
    2. Loved your tip to use the catdboatd donut to approximate the trim-shape. Saves trimming too much or making a misshapen sphere. Great tip.
    A small suggestion if I can share. I thread the tying string between the 2 pieces of cardboard before I start wrapping... prevents the wraps from moving too much after they're cut.

    @silviamiller9971 Před 2 lety +130

    My grandmother taught me how to make pom-poms like that over 50 years ago.
    The only difference that makes it a lot easier is to lay the tie-off string between the donut halves before you start wrapping. By doing that, you won't have to worry about trying to keep everything from falling appart when you cut.

      @w.t.1338 Před 2 lety +8

      Totally right! I was using thicker yarn and they all started falling out during the cutting stage. If I had laid out the string between the guides before wrapping I think that would have helped!

    • @stroopwafel14
      @stroopwafel14 Před 2 lety +1

      @rebeccalofft6855 Před 2 lety +9

      I wish I had read your comment before I made the pom pom. :-D Would have worked much better to put the string in between the donut halves first. Learning by doing. Also wished that I had drawn the inner circle a bit smaller than I did, so that the yarn bits ended up longer. But great tutorial otherwise!

    This is the first pom pom tutorial I watched and it makes it seems so easy. A complete crafting newbie like me made some fluffy pom poms in the very first attempt and all the 4 came out the well, true to the title. The trimming tip at the end is the best. A couple videos I watched later didn't have such a tip. Thank you for this tutorial!

    I needed a bigger, fluffier pom pom for a bunny tail for my grandson's Halloween costume, so I used a larger "donut" and bulky yarn along with a medium weight for a 2 tone effect. Once I started cutting the yarn loops to free them, it became very difficult to keep everything from unraveling. I used thin ribbon "yarn" for the cording, so I started inserting the cording as I cut the loops, so when I was done the cording was already in place to tighten. Maybe adding the option of pre-threading the cording at the center of the "donut" before wrapping the yarn would be a good suggestion when making larger, bulkier pom poms. Otherwise the pom pom came out very nice, and I really like your method. :)

    After the first trim use a dog slicker brush (wire) to make the pompom fuller. Run your hand around the ball to bring additional fullness. Then trim the then yarn threads that are beyond the pom pom's outer circumference. It really adds to the fullness.

      You need to pull the cord round the middle much tighter.

    • @LizzieStuff
      @LizzieStuff Před 7 měsíci +8

      You need to tie the center string really tight like, pull like you have never pulled before to cinch those little yarn strings in place. 🙂

    I loved everything about this video. I’m making my first beanie and don’t have the Pom Pom tool so I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to make one. This is so perfect. Thanks so much for sharing what you know 💙💙

    Great tutorial! Thank you! I used an exacto knife for cutting the yarn after wrapping it around the donut template and I found that it worked very well!

    When I cut it, the yarn came loose off the ring, although I didn't wrap it loosely. Any suggestions please?

      Iuliana Schnell if you put the tie yarn inside the donuts before you wrap ,you can tie the knot before you cut . Just make sure you tie the knot very tight after you cut the Pom. I hope I made my self understood.

      Much easier way without gadgets. I wrap yarn around 3 -4 fingers until I get desired thickness then set the loop down carefully and tie string around middle of that crossways. Tie tight a couple times, turn over and repeat. Then pick it up and snip all the loops open. Should be able to cut many at a time if lined up right. Leave strings used to tie longer and then hold flat in between fingers and thumb to cut edges into a circular pattern. Flip in many directions to get full, fluffy look. I made this sound complicated but it's not, lol.

      Okay, I realize that the thing u gotta do when doing this is making sure to pinch the centre the whole time until u tie it. My first one completely just fell apart, but when I pinched it stayed and my pom pom turned out super cute

      There is a SIGNIFICANTLY easier method where you just tie it around your hands.
