Tatiana from Jinjer and Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy, both of which you are familiar with, as well as pretty much every other "newer wave" vocalists (male and female) that growl in similar genres cite Mikael (the dude here) as being one of their biggest influences. He's one of the OGs, best growls in the game since '88 and one of the best composers out there.

Finally some Opeth! here's a quick guide of their material:
If you loved the melodic side, listen to anything from the album "Damnation" especially Windowpane and Death Wispered a Lullaby. Other melodic songs include: To Bid You Farewell, Harvest, and Benighted
The newer stuff is just straight prog, would recommend Heart in Hand and Moon Above, Sun Below
And of course their melodic prog death metal. songs such as Blackwater Park, The Moor, and The Leper Affinity
Opeth has a huge variety of genres and sounds. Great reaction.

Mikael Akerfeldt (the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist) is imo one of the best musicians in history. He writes and arranges 90% of the band's music. This song is a great example of his talent but it goes much deeper and spreads wider. If you wanna keep reacting to Opeth you should definitely check out some of their ballads: Face of Melinda, Burden, Harvest, Hessian peel, Windowpane, Benighted, The Lotus eater as well as the heavy stuff: Ghost of perdition, Demon of the fall, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Drapery falls, Leper Affinity.

Opeth is a definite experience. The Tool of the metal world ...at least for me. Glad you guys finally got to Opeth! My favorite band for almost 20 years now. You can definitely feel the different regional influnces from bands in the metal scene especially because it is such a world-wide genre. A lot of the European bands tend to draw influence from folk and classical much more than American bands, which use more blues influence, hence the grittier sound.

Opeth is always a journey. They go from harsh death metal to a soothing lullaby and everything between, sometimes in the same song. But no matter what direction, it works well and flows beautifully. In many ways I approach Opeth more like following a book or movie rather than a song. Check out "Bleak" or "Deliverance" if you want more tracks that show off their range.

It's more the genre, I think. But Opeth is still has a very unique sound.
It's Progressive metal, it's pretty common to have long songs consisting of many different sounding - but intertwining - segments.
Opeth is, in my opinion, the best within this genre.
Hopefully you'll listen to some more Opeth soon! Old school Opeth, like Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearse and Still Life are awesome! If you only listen to the latest albums, you'll not get the full experience.

Your mainstream listener/band is used to shorter songs and quick hooks, whereas a masterpiece like this fleshes out the riffs, has more depth and transitions. After listening to this kind of music for some time I find in nearly impossible to go back to simplicity. There is certainly nothing wrong with enjoying simply songs, which can also be reaching and powerful, but there is a clear difference in the experience and expectations.

Opeth!!! What you said about culture has a point since in Europe classical music (even the modern politonal polirhythmic) is more in schools and in general. So kids who want play rock already have heard musical pieces that have influenced the world as in with us, it's more inclined to our everyday in the radio music.

Also, if they like Jinjer, Vintersea is a good choice too.

Blackwater park is a game changer so that would be awesome. Also going down a different route and another band that changed music. You should really do king’s X - Pleiades
More Soen too - the words is the most emotional track I’ve ever heard. Gets me every time.
    Keep em coming guys

Oh fuck me yes! Been waiting for you to get to Opeth. My favorite band (they are above the Gods amongst us in Tool in my opinion), although, I may be a bit biased since I'm Swedish.
Opeth doesn't have a single bad track. Not one. Mikael had the best growls in the industry back in the day (he also did stuff with Bloodbath), and still to this day, his growls hold up fine!
Highly recommend you checking out these songs by Opeth as they show their versatility.
Hessian Peel, Burden, Deliverance, In my Time of Need, Ghost of Perdition(!!!), Windowpane, The Grand Conjuration and Sorceress, for a start. Like I said, they don't do bad songs. They just don't. That's not Opeth.
    Cheers! 😂🍻

I might get roasted for this, but I believe Mikael Åkerfeldt is the only singer that can challenge Tatiana for combined abilities in clean vocal and growl in modern metal. Those two are top of the tree for me.

    • @davidhughes8204

Akerfeldt in his prime growling period was unbelievable. Lucky enough to see Opeth live a few times and it was like a freaking lions roar! Contrast with his cleans was amazing. Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis up there too 🤘

2000-08 Akerfeldt's growl is most brutal....Check out the shepherds bush performance especially.

    • @Celatra

Mikael is second to none as he not only growls like hell but sings beuatifully, something Tatiana can't do, her singing is obnoxious. Plus she doesn't write and compose the songs like Mikael does with his band

I've had an Opeth tatoo for 17 years, they're worth listening to (not new stuff though). Try Apostle In Triumph, it's from their first album, they weren't even 20 years old yet when they recorded it.

I would suggest to check out Therion, a symphonic metal band from Sweden.
Maybe 'Rise of sodom and Gomorra' (Live Miskolc experience), 'Ginnungagap' (live gothic) or 'Raven of dispersion'.
