From my experience, there is only a couple of times in life when you hear a band for the first time and it completely changes your world. Two years ago while listening to Slayer radio on Pandora this song came on. I literally stopped running to see what song/band was playing, as I never heard it before. I proceeded down the Opeth rabbit hole for 9 months. Keep it coming!

I was 15 years old when I listened to Opeth for the first time. I thought to myself this is really something else, but my taste was not yet evolved to appreciate it. Same year I bought Ghost Reveries in a record shop because I recognized the name, I put it on the shelf instead of listening to it. Started to listen to more prog rock/metal. Two years later I found the GR CD again. I put it on, and immidiately fell in love with them. Since then they have been my favorite band, only Between the Buried And Me are able to match them, in my opinion

The " flute"( and strings) is actually a melotron. That instrument was a precursor to synthesizers, and has a very " classic 60s and 70s" sound.

Opeth are amazing. A lot of their early work is like this, though their very early stuff is heavier and less finessed. Their later work almost entirely dropped the metal and went prog rock. It's all great, though. Check out Damnation, Harlequin Forest, Hours of Wealth and Isolation Years for some of the great stuff from their early work. Blackwater Park is the seminal work from their very early stuff. The Sorceress is a great tune from their lighter stuff.

  • @scyphe
    @scyphe Před 3 lety +5

They're a progressive band and mix heavy and soft parts with almost magical transitions. They've made 5 albums that have nothing to do with growling or any form of really heavy metal stuff. You're right on the money when it comes to the music not being nearly as heavy as his death metal growling. The music is more a unique blend of various metal and non-metal influences with some unusual chord structures/progressions and acoustic sections, all mixed in pot that serves dark and very atmospheric music that can't be categorized as "this" or "that" beyond being progressive.
In your car you'd probably want to go for the Damnation album (all soft) or Pale Communion (their later work with no growling or heavy metal, just some really amazing songs).

    Nice reaction. Thanx! :)
Opeth is kind of middle heavy but not so much.. very much progressive metal. I will give you 4 more bands to kind of show a scale.
    1 middle heavy - Opeth
2 heavy! But with some metalica vibes - Orbit Culture
3 Heavy as hell and a drummer out of this world (the band that invented djent but they play experimental extreme metal -
    4. Death metal heavy (the band that invented chainsaw sound) - entombed
5 satan started a band heavy (not in screaming guitars but the lowest of the lowest sounds - Humanity’s last breath
So why did I pic these bands? First cos it’s a good example how heavy it can get. The second is that they are all from the metal country sweden. :)

You did a great job keeping us with you on your journey into uncharted territory and I enjoyed watching someone trying to transition their skillset to something new.
You touched on so many things in fairly accurate but imprecise ways. I'm going to assume that you've learned more since then.
In terms of Opeth, they mostly live on a continuum of progressive rock and death metal.
The Nightwish vibe, depending on what you felt, could be in the symphonic/ power metal vibe which has a lot of links to progressive metal.
If you want to get a different handle on it you can check out Hacktivist. They're more djent than traditional progressive metal but if you keep pulling it you'll get to hear some amazing things.
