Making Calming Lavender Goat Milk Soap in a Slab Mold

- In this video, we'll show you how we make our Calming Lavender Goat Milk & Oatmeal soap and talk though each step. This video is pretty much entirely real-time, so come along with us and see how we make soap in our studio! Calming Lavender is one of our top-selling bars and is a very soothing and gentle bar of soap. The high butters in this soap, along with goat milk and oatmeal create a smooth and creamy bar. I wear glasses and never would have thought to just get a face shield instead of goggles that hurt your nose or head! Brilliant.
It's a great option! I was reminded of how important it is while making soap yesterday... my stick blender came apart and splashed down into the batter, which ended up spraying my face with batter. Ack! I was so glad to have my safety goggles on and a face shield would have been even better.

I love this - your workspace is so organized and calming, and I love to see larger scale soap production processes. Are these big slabs covered and insulated after you make them?
Hi there and thank you! We do not cover or insulate our slabs. We just let them do their thing! I used to worry about that a lot back in the day, but I've learned to just let the soap do what it's going to do. All our soaps gel, as the slabs get very hot and we do get soda ash on most of our slabs, but it's not too bad and sometimes it even enhances the look of the soap!

Thank you! We usually soap between 85-100 degrees F. We don't bother covering our slabs... we just leave them and let nature do its thing! :)

Hi Roma! Handmade soap actually has a very long shelf life (I’d say 12-18 months, but it can be way longer than that…), but the main issue is that scents fade after a little while, particularly essential oils. I’d recommend using our bars within 4-6 months for the best scent experience. I hope that helps!

Hi and thanks! We use a 50/50 lye water solution for our soap and you can see our video on how we make it. When you use lye, you need to use a lye calculator to figure out how much to use depending on the oils in your recipe. I hope that helps! :)

Thanks so much for watching! We personally do not cover any of our soaps, as they fully gel in the slab molds. If you're using smaller molds, you may want to cover them to allow full gel and try to reduce the ash. Honestly, I'm lazy and never really bothered to do it even when we were smaller scale and it's always been just fine. :)

Can i ask you - how long is the cure time for this tipe of soup ?
Thank you! Cure time is all about your bar losing water weight, so it's very dependent on how much water/liquid you use in your soap as well as where you live and how dry or humid it is where your soaps are curing. Our cure time (which we measured out) is 3 weeks, but we typically cure for 4 weeks before selling our soap. To measure your cure time, you need to weigh the same bar of soap every day (at first) and then every few days to see when it stops losing water weight.

Hi there! Thank you for watching. We do not refrigerate our milk soaps. We do leave them uncovered. We don't have issues with the soap cracking because our oils and lye are quite cool when we make our soap (between 85-95 degrees Fahrenheit). I hope this helps!

Yes! Great idea. We do show the inside of this bar during the video, but it is from a different batch. Maybe we'll do a cutting video one day!
Hi! Thank you so much for the videos! Do you ever experience soda ash? I read so much about it and still can’t seem to figure it out if it’s more connected with the water content on the lye solution or the blending temperature. If you have any thoughts on that I would really appreciate it 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi! You're welcome! Thanks for watching. Yes, we do get soda ash on pretty much all our soaps, which doesn't concern me too much. Soda ash is calcium carbonate and completely harmless. It is formed where unsaponified lye meets air and typically washes off during the first use of the soap. One way to avoid it is to cover your soaps. For example, when using bubble wrap to make a honeycomb texture on your bar, you're preventing air from hitting the top of your soap, so you avoid soda ash. Using a cover on your mold can help accomplish the same thing, although it's not perfect. Using less water in your soap will also help with soda ash. Some people that use a very low water to lye ratio seem to experience no soda ash at all. Additionally, the warmer you soap, the less ash you typically get. We use a 2:1 water to lye ratio and soap cool, so we do get ash, but I kind of like it! Nobody has ever complained and I don't fight it any more.

I do use a lower water recipe (I make a 35,8% lye concentration) and do cover my soaps straight away and then some get ash and some don’t but yeah I guess the trick is just to accept it eheh

Great video! These are so helpful. Can I ask where you buy your clays from? Your purple Brazilian clay is a LOT darker than mine. I have been having to add WAY too much purple clay in order to get an actual purple color and every time I do this the batter sets up so quickly preventing me from doing a nice swirl. I am finally realizing I need to try another clay that is darker especially after watching this and seeing how much time you had to work with that. Please help!!

Do you chill the bars while they cure for any amount of time? Since it's made out of goats milk? I'm new to all of this and read some where to refrigerate or do you leave them out to cure like any other soap?
Hi! Great question. A lot of soapmakers do put their milk soaps in the fridge or freezer, but we don't. Because we use less milk (since we use the milk in oils method) and we're not too worried about our soap being pure white, we just let it sit out in the mold. The reason many soapmakers put their milk soaps in the fridge or a cooler area is to prevent gel, as this makes the color of the final soap a little lighter. Maybe try it both ways and see what you prefer! I actually found that I used to get gel rings when I put my soaps in the fridge, particularly once I switched to wooden molds.
So you added your oils before you added the lye. I have seen others do the opposite and add lye and let it saphonify first. What is the difference or is it just preference?
Yes, good question! Many soapmakers will add essential oils and additives at trace, but I prefer to add them in earlier (if I can - more on this later) as it allows me to incorporate them into my oils more easily by blending as much as I want without worrying about my batter thickening up. I also ensures that I don't forget to add anything when I'm in the throws of making soap! However, if the additives accelerate trace (like when using clove essential oil), I make sure to add it at trace. So, you need to understand how an ingredient affects trace before you decide to add everything in at the beginning. I hope this helps!

Hi! Great video - thank you so much for sharing your process! How do you keep your goat milk slab from overheating? We have a 30# slab and it’s so unpredictable (about half the batches overheat) that we’ve stopped using it. 😢
Hi Julie - great question! We used to make these in 5 lb loaf molds, which helped keep things cooler. These are 22.5 lb slab molds and we find it works fine, except our soap just comes out darker due to gel. It's worth it for us, since the slabs are easier and quicker. So, we only use half the milk (as you saw in the video) and we soap cool - usually 85-90 degrees F. Are your soaps cracking? Or are you just finding that the bars don't look as good?
@@muddymintsoap Thanks for responding - that helps a lot. We soap cool and use half milk too. Sometimes the soap in the bottom middle of the slab mold cracks and gets brittle. The top of the soap is always fine so we never know it’s overheated until we unmold. Maybe going from 22.5 lbs to 30 lbs makes a big difference?
Oh wow! That's interesting. The larger slab could definitely make a difference. I've never seen a soap that cracked on the bottom like that. Have you tried raising your slabs off the table to generate some airflow under there? If it gets brittle, it could be because of too many butters in the recipe? Just thinking out loud...
Also, I'm assuming you're not covering your slabs, right? I do think raising the slabs up on the edges somehow (maybe using two loaf molds, if you have them) could certainly help. I know our slabs get really hot on our wood tables. As soon as you move one, you can feel the heat coming off the table! Sometimes I move mine after an hour or so, if I happen to think of it, so it doesn't get too hot.
@@muddymintsoap good thoughts! The first time we used the slab, it was on a table overnight. So then the second time we elevated it. It was also the coldest night of the year and the soap shed got down to 45 degrees. That batch turned out slightly brittle but no cracking/bubbling on the bottom. I thought maybe it needed refrigerated so the next batch I put outside for a 4-5 hours (cold Oregon winter) and that batch overheated too. I was at a loss! We use shea and mango butters and it works fine in our loaf molds. But maybe the combo of the slab and the recipe with butters is our downfall. It’s such a mystery!

So we had our first try today- and we added the 50/50 lye water to our oil at about 125 degrees for the lye and 115 for the oil/goats milk. Mixed to light trace then added essential oil. It set up so fast we barely got it into the mold! Wonder where we went wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice! You guys are awesome!
Hi there! Thank you for the kind words and I'm happy to try and help. Based on the information you provided, I'm assuming you used 20 oz of lye water solution and added 10 oz of goat milk to your oils? It depends on your recipe, but your lye amount seems a little high... did you run it through a lye calculator? Too much lye would definitely accelerate trace. It also seems like you're using too much essential oil (10% of the oils is very high). You should be using a max of 6% or so, which is a TOTAL of 3.6 oz of essential oil (1.8 oz frankincense + 1.8 oz myrrh). I've never used myrrh, but it's possible that it also accelerates trace. Finally, I typically make soap with my oils and lye at 110 degrees maximum, so you're soaping a little hot. The standard advice is to have your lye and oils UNDER 120 degrees F. I hope this helps!

what source do you recomend buying the scent oils from, I want safe skin safe ingredients , I will be studying how to make soap and after the new year I plan to actually make soap, I need to prepare a nice room and get all the supplies, but like I emailed you I would like a signature scent for my business so just one or 2 perfect scent blends i know i want to have 3 colors the brazillion purple clay and green ( what did you use to color the green soap? spirolina powder? Hi there! There are a lot of essential oil suppliers, but I tend to purchase from Brambleberry and New Directions. Green is a little tricky, but there are ways to get a good green. Spirulina is fantastic, but tends to fade a lot during cure. I should do a video on green colorants! :)
What about temperatures does it actually make that much differences??
Yes! Since soapmaking is a chemical reaction between oils and lye, the temperature is a very important part of the process. When there is an issue with your soap, it often ends up being something temperature related. Over the years, I've found that keeping your temperatures the same for every batch helps ensure that your results are more consistent.
Great video! Do you buy your goat milk just from a supermarket?
Thank you! We do typically buy it at the supermarket. Getting it locally from a farm would be way more fun though!
In my experience the lavender buds turn black after a while. Are you able to prevent that?
I've heard this is a problem for a lot of people, but we're lucky and our lavender buds are just fine. I have a couple of theories... one is that we live in a very dry climate, so maybe humidity affects the buds? We also soap cool (around 90 degrees F), so maybe if your soap is really hot, it'll turn the bud brown/black? I'm not sure why, but we don't have issues with any of our botanicals turning brown.

Hi there! Do you mean you're using the heat transfer method? We don't use this method, as our lye is already cool, so we melt our butters before adding the lye-water. I hope this helps! :)

So if I was calculating the lye mixture in soapcalc would I put it in as a 33.33% solution and just split the water and goat milk weight in half?
Yes! I usually fill in "water : lye ratio" as 2:1 in soapcalc. Then, half the water amount is mixed with your lye and half the water amount is your goat milk , which you put in the oils.

Nope! I usually just shake it up a little and pour! The temperature does make a difference, as if it's cold out of the fridge, it will cool your oils, so just keep that in mind.

Did you compensate additional lye into the mixture since you added goatmilk? Your tank is 50/50 but with the goatmilk your overall concentrate wouldn't be the same, just curious. Great video and demonstration! :)
Hi there! The lye amount in a recipe always stays the same, regardless of the amount of liquid you're using. That's because the amount of lye required in a recipe is based on the oil amount, not the liquid amount. We are using a 2:1 liquid to lye ratio here. Basically, we are using one part lye, one part water, and one part goat milk. This means we have one part lye to two parts liquid. I hope this helps! :)

I love using your soaps. They have a strong smell even though they are only EOs. what do you guys do so they EO stay strong on the soaps?
Thanks so much! We don’t do anything special during soapmaking, other than soaping cool. We do use the maximum amount of essential oil that we can (check max IFRA usage rates) and we use high quality essential oils. Finally, we only have about 2-3 months worth of inventory on hand at a time, so that our soap isn’t sitting around too long before it sells. I hope that helps!
Do you use a vanilla stabilizer to keep it from getting discolored
Hi! We don't use fragrance oils, so we don't need to use a vanilla stabilizer in this soap. It only contains lavender essential oil. :) Our soap does heat up quite a bit in the slab and ends up being a cream color, rather than white, but that's okay with us! When we made this soap in loaf molds, it was a lot whiter, as it didn't heat up as much.

How did Troy make your molds?
Troy is a woodworker, so he just drew up a design and whipped it up! Maybe he’ll release his mold design one day. It’s essentially just a wood box with one removable side, so it’s not that complicated, if you are comfortable with wood working.
Where do you get your goats milk? What do you mix your goats milk with?
Hi Dawn! We purchase our goat milk from the grocery store, but you can also purchase it from a local farmer which I recommend if you can! We don’t add anything to it. :)
Where do you get your mold
Hey there! Troy made our molds custom for the size we needed, but you can get some nice ones from Workshop Heritage, if you're looking for a slab mold about this size.
What if i want to make 50 soaps what is the best measure with the lye
Hi there! I recommend you watch some beginner cold process soapmaking videos. The lye amount is dependent on the weight of the oils you use in your soap (rather than the number of bars of soap). You'll need to use a lye calculator to figure out the lye amount. I hope this helps and I'm sorry if I misunderstood your question!

Do you use fresh goat milk or store bought?
We’ve used both, but this is store bought and it’s what we typically use. If you can get fresh goat milk, that would be amazing!
Does the temperature matter?
Hi there! Yes! The temperature is an important element in soapmaking. We usually make our soap when our oils and lye-water are both between 85-100 degrees Fahrenheit. I hope that helps!
Where do you get most of your fragrance oils that behaves well in cold process? want to get " Mahogany Teakwood" Some had mention you folks?
Hi! We don't use fragrance oils. We only use essential oils. Sorry!

Simi can you tell me the measurements of your slab mold ?
Our slab mold is equivalent to four of the Nurture Soap 5 lb loaf molds that we used to use. It is 18"x14". I recommend that if you're making your own slab mold, that you made it per the specifications of the soap you want to make rather than making it just like ours, as it may not end up how you want it. :)

Can i use goat yoghurt
Hi! You can use yogurt in soap, but I wouldn't do a full water replacement with yogurt. Since yogurt is more solid, some portion of it is considered liquid and some is not. You can use a certain number of ounces of yogurt and top off the rest with distilled water. Maybe do a little research and see if you can find some recipes online that use yogurt, as a good starting point. Good luck!

Hi! Most sodium hydroxide is labeled 99%+ purity and that's good to use. :)

Lye?
Hi! Yes, we add 50/50 lye water to this soap… is that what you mean? You can’t make soap without lye, as soap is the result of a chemical reaction between oils and lye! It’s a magical science and there’s no lye remaining in the final product. Just lovely soap and naturally occurring glycerin. 😊
