How We Make Our Rosemary Mint & Juniper Soap

- Here's a step-by-step process on how we make our Rosemary Mint & Juniper cold process handmade soap. We show you how to add coconut milk to your soap using the milk in oils method and give a few fun tips along the way!

Slab mold was handmade by us (by Troy!). Our slab mold is lined with freezer paper, which we purchase from Webstaurant.
We purchase our oils in drums from Soaper's Choice and our butters from Bulk Apothecary. Our essential oils in this recipe are from New Directions Aromatics and our Lye is from Duda Diesel and/or Bulk Apothecary. My special spoon is a teaspoon from my kitchen (make sure it's stainless steel!).

This is a great video, very organized and professional! I appreciate you sharing your process. I like how you add your EO blend before your lye and I’m wondering if there are any resources you’d recommend with info about which essential oils accelerate trace? Thank you!
Hi there! Thanks for your comment and for watching! That’s a great question. The essential oil that we always leave out to blend at trace is clove. Other essential oils that we use that can accelerate are geranium, fir needle, and lemongrass. I personally don’t find them too bad, so we put those in with our oils, but I’d probably add them at trace the first time you use them until you can feel how the batter is behaving. Thyme accelerates a ton, so watch out for that one as well. In general, spicy essential oils (clove, cinnamon, etc) tend to accelerate, as well as florals like geranium. When I’m doubt, leave it out! 😊

I especially love the way you made curves in the mold, it almost looks like you're making cake batter! If you don't mind me asking, how big is your soap mold? Have you ever filled it to the top? I'm curious as to how much soap you can make at one time. Also, can you share where you buy your giant hand mixer? I'm looking for one to make soap-making easier. Thank you so much for this incredibly kind comment! :) I have a link to the stick blender in the description and the really big one we use sometimes is linked in our lye video that we just posted yesterday.
Our mold is 18"x14"x3.5" and we make 22.5 lb batches in there. We don't fill the mold to the top, as you can see. If we did, we'd have really tall bars and could probably make a square bar, which would be cool! Each of these molds yields 64 bars of soap for us.
We typically make three of these at once (6 buckets), which is our batch size, but as you can see, we split it into 6 mini-batches.

I just have 2 questions about the way you make soaps :
- How do you melt solid oils ? Do you use a microwave ? Cause I always spend a lot of time checking that the lye and the oils are at the same temperature ! (I don’t prepare the lye in advance yet).
- Do you cover the soaps at the end to avoid « white color » on the top ?

Hi Audrey! Our oils are already melted. We have a heat band on our oil drums and then we keep our butters in water jacketed tanks. If our oils are a little cool, we microwave our butters a bit and that fixes it. So, we’re pretty lucky with our setup, although it wasn’t an accident! 😉
For your second question: we don’t cover our soaps. I like to let nature do it’s thing and just let it come out how it comes out! :)

Thank you! We work close to room temperature. We usually have our oils and lye-water between 80-100 degrees F. And, yes, after we made this soap for the camera, we made two more slabs off camera. We did find that if our lye-water was under 80 degrees, we sometimes ran into problems with our soaps because we use a lot of butters. The butters solidified and cooler lye water can also lead to false trace. I hope that helps!

You're welcome! You can reduce soda ash by soaping warmer and cutting your water amount. We personally just leave all our ash on top of the soaps. Doesn't bother me! Some of our soaps do get a lot of ash, but sometimes it enhances the look of the bar.

Hi Simi! Great video, love your process of making soap and I have a question about adding your essential oils before your lye water. Is that because you have your lye made in advance and it doesn't get hot? My essential oils have evaporated when my batter was too hot. Thanks again for your video!
Hi Janice! Thank you and great question! We didn't mention it in the video, but both our lye-water and our oils were at about 90 degrees F when we mixed them together. Our lye is made once every week or two in a large lye tank, so it's been cooling down for a while. We actually heat it up in the tank to around 90 degrees before we make soap and our oils are at a similar temperature. Of course, the batter heats up more once the lye water and oils start to react and the soap heats up even more in the mold (usually to about 120 F for us), but the essential oils seem okay through all that. I hope that helps!

@@barbarawexler3714 Hi there! If you're not making your lye water from scratch and you're storing it in a container, then you can use it as is if you like. We found that if our lye water was under 80 degrees F, we seemed to run into some issues. Before we had our lye tank, we used to warm up our lye with a warm water bath. Pour hot/warm water in a larger container and then put your lye-water container inside of it. Don't ever microwave lye water or heat it up on the stove! A gentle slow heat up with a water bath is really the only safe way to do it, as far as I know. You can also add water to your 50/50 lye solution to warm it up, if that's what you're using as your extra liquid. Hope that helps!

No EO in the top layer?
Hi there! We did add EOs (and the coconut milk) at the beginning to the second bucket (around 2:45). Both buckets were prepped ahead of time, so when I add the lye to the second bucket, the additional liquid and EOs are already in there. I hope this helps!

For how long do you allow your soap to cure before cutting ?
Hi there! We cut our soap after 24-48 hours and then we cure it for 4 weeks. :)

Hi Lauren! We don't force gel on any of our soaps, but they do tend to gel in the wood slab mold (and yes, the coconut milk certainly contributes as well!).

Actually, I was able to figure out how to get Turkish subtitles just through CZcams! If you click settings, you can choose subtitles, and then pick your language. The english subtitles are quite good, so hopefully the Turkish translation is as well. I hope that works for you!
