  • MotoMan drives the 2016 BMW M2 on Laguna Seca and yes, goes through the engineering that went into the 365 HP BMW N55 3.0 Turbo 6 cylinder engine, the herculean effort to keep it cool & reliable as well as the bits that affect the driving dynamics - but after lapping Laguna Seca multiple times in this spiritual successor to nostalgic BMWs of the past, the BMW M2 presents MotoMan with not only an unusual question of balance but what does it compete with . . .

      +Roger Lee In terms of having the car in front of you to pick, yes you'll take the M4. But if you were to purchase the car for your self, you'd be saving $75k+ if you took the M2 (here in australia). I assume percentage wise the difference would be similar in other countries, so it's a lot cheaper.

    This guy is really and underrated reviewer. Has all his facts memorized, presented succinctly. Thankfully has actually driven track before and faster cars (so he's not just immediately gushing like some amateurs.. my point here; most people are going to "LOVE" a car the first time they track it). Being able to intelligibly communicate while navigating Laguna Seca at speed is also really incredible. American Chris Harris right here.

    I drive a 2000 BMW M Roadster in Santa Barbara, CA. The M2 and the M235i are absolutely the only BMW's I would consider right now. Manual transmission only, though. Wish it weighed 200 lb less. BMW has really lost its way in the past decade; hopefully this will spawn a new generation of driver-focused cars for those of us who would never buy an SUV.

    M2. I prefer the smaller size and balance. I currently am in a 350z. When I started driving at 16 I feel like I started with some of the best BMW ever made, the 2003 3 series. I had a 68 mustang and a 2005 rousch mustang gt, and I liked the power there - something I felt the 3 was short on, but NOTHING could touch the engineering. I'm sitting here wondering tonight how many people are looking at a Cayman GT4 and wondering if they want an M2 instead. My 350z is pissed off anytime it's not just tearing itself apart and eating rubber, my BMW would drive anyway, anytime, anywhere. I feel like that forms a bond and allows you to push your driving further than normal because of trust and understanding the car. There is something about the feel of the former 3 series that was just magic. I feel both spoiled to have started driving during that time period, but also tremendously blessed to have had such a high bar set. Oh and I live in North Texas. To me it seems like the M2 is the best thing BMW is putting out. Seems like if I was moving towards an M3 or M4 it would be more do I get an M2 or do I get an M5. I would still pick M2 for myself, but I'm single and 5'10". I wish I still had my old 3 but with about 200 more horsepower than it had.

    For me, the choice is easy, M3 Sedan. I own a 328I Sedan and I love it. The fact that I can enjoy my drive with or without the kids in the back, makes my day. I love to drive, and when given the choice, I drive everywhere. With the M3, my family could never say that they would rather a road trip in something else. No my friend we go in the ultimate driving machine.

    As I already say on the first video, I'm Italian and I leave in Japan. I was for long time looking to get an M3 and the time I was ready to get one, now is M4 and is too long ang big I love this size, because on road I believe the M2 got not the technology better today, but the right size to enjoy it. Yes if you are lucky to have a circuit close to your home any size will be good, but I don't have it. In conclusion I also agree about the look, sensuality and simplicity, which will translate in timeless design. Like the old M3 and the 1M which I love it:)

    Good review. As a former E36 M3 and current E46 M3 owner and serious mountain twisty enthusiast, I never felt the urge to upgrade to the last two generations due to their weight and lack of dynamic feel. Sure, they've got more power but it doesn't matter when you're carving tight hairpins.
    I did consider getting the 1M Coupe but they're all model and their sellers are asking ludicrous prices on the used markets in the US.
    This Motoman review is consistent with others I've seen. I follow Bill Auberlein on FB (IHG Rewards, Turner Motorsports driver) and he raved that the M2 felt similar to the superlative - feeling E46 M3 at Laguna Seca.
    If this car is like an E46 M3 with pile of torque in the low to mid range of the torque band, I may scrap my plans to do a 3.4L stroker build with my S54 engine in my E46 M3.

  • @wolfhead2208

    I drove an E30 for 8 years, and I've always preferred the feel of the smaller sport coupes, so my pick would be the M2. In addition to its size, the balance and feedback sound more my style. My current daily driver around Chicago is an M235i with manual transmission (so, big surprise I picked the M2...)

    Great review. As a current F80 M3 owner, I would still choose an M3 over an M2 for practicality reasons. However, the M2 has my attention. The choice would appear to depend on both your personal tastes and your needs. Comparisons of the M3/M4 and M2 should prove interesting.

  • @christiancoopersmith3878

    Chris from NYC area. I'd pick the M2 anytime over the M4. It's the balance thing that you talked about, it's the tautness and precision of a small car, its lightness and agility (even though I'd like the M2 to be a bit lighter). That's more important than raw power. In fact I have an M2 on order so I've made my choice. Other cars: Boxster S, CLA 45, Fiesta ST with Cobb Stage 3, F12 Berlinetta. Focus RS on order (seemingly forever).

  • @iLuveKatsup
    @iLuveKatsup Před 8 lety +1

    I'd take the M3 because the sedan is the most practical of the bunch. I consider these M cars to be daily drivers, not a sports/track car. So the M3 fits the bill. Just an aside.. it's ironic that BMWs ONLY sportscar (w/ currrent line up), the Z4, doesn't have an M version or an M package. Meanwhile, BMWs SUVs have an M package available. That is crazy!

  • @gelkins2
    @gelkins2 Před 8 lety

    I drive an F83 M4. Loving the M2 package just like I used to lust over the 1M. When it's time to trade in the M4 I may look at the M2. Though one thing I like better about the M3/M4 is the wider range of exterior/interior colors and the fact that they will accommodate many individual colors. Early reports have been no individuals on the M2. I'm in Texas. Also to the person who asked about the additional temp control below the vents. It is to control to temp out of the vents specifically. I think it's genius myself.

    I own an e46 M3 . And a M235i which just trade for an M2 a week ago . Let me say that even though I watch about every video available on the M2 I still was blown away by the M2 the minute I drove off from the dealer I felt immediately the stiffens of the chaise and the perfect calibration of the suspension . It feels nothing like the M235i ( which is a great car by the way) and much more like a modern e46 but with much more power

  • @jplebihan
    @jplebihan Před 8 lety

    I drive a 2014 M235i and just ordered the M2. The M235i is the best car I ever owned, but a first glimpse at the M2... and the irrational decision to sell the M235i was made (both cars with MT). At 55K with the exec package & taxes the M2 is a pretty good value for the money (in Europe the car costs over 65K euros because of eco taxes and VAT, we are lucky to get this car for this price in the US). It sounds better than the M4, looks better (I loved the E90 M3 Coupe, but the M4 looks like a big GT) and does seat 4 pretty comfortably. I'll miss my red coral leather interior and wish the M2 offered more exciting color options, but a small sacrifice for years of pure driving pleasure in the new M2.

Reason for taking the M3 is down to the exchange rate, with the $ getting stronger the value for money the M3 was the better option. I loved my 135i and was hoping the M235i would be a step up, in my view it wasn't. So now the M3, got to say, the car is great, bigger than M235i but more inline with the fun I had with the 135i.

    Hi George....driving a Cadillac CTS V-sport in Nashville.
    Reading and watching the reviews on this car has been interesting to say the least. First, it's unlikely I'll ever drive one since I doubt I'll fit it in with my extra long legs. But it did remind me of the first time I ever drove a small BMW and that was the 318i circa about 1993. The engine needed be be revved up near redline to do anything but the lesson for me was the steering and driving dynamics. All of a sudden I understood why automotive journalists had been fawning over BMW since I starting reading their mags in high school.
    Fast forward to today. The M5 doesn't seem to impress people anymore. The M3/M4, which is supposed to be the spiritual leader of its segment just got it's butt handed to it in two different national reviews to the Mercedes C63S and the Cadillac ATS-V. In both reviews, the M3/M4 came in last and it wasn't that close. Journalists everywhere were honestly hand wringing and saying..."has BMW truly lost it"? and "And do they even care?"
    Well it seems like for this one car, they got the message. The 1M predecessor was nice but this car fixed many things about that car, namely the styling. You actually want to be seen this car versus making excuses for why you bought it. BMW finally seems to have mastered electric steering, something Cadillac figured out two years ago. It has the right amount of power...not too much, not too little. The interior looks like a BMW interior from 20 years ago, plus a tacked on screen. And finally BMW rediscovered their handling mojo after watching Mercedes and Cadillac literally rub their noses in BMW's old street cred.
    There will be nitpicks of course but none of that matters...BMW is back, baby! Which makes this vehicle special because, "get it now before it's gone". BMW has already told journalists that the 1/2 platform will move to the FWD platform BMW shares with Mini in the next interaction of this car, which means that it may be damn near impossible to duplicate this vehicle going forward. As it stands, there really isn't much direct competition because of that platform. Once they move to FWD/AWD, then you can talk about the Mercedes CLA or Audi A3/S3.

    Currently drive an old Cayman and love it. I'd probably go with the M2 because it's cheaper and you can get it with a manual. Money no object, the idea of having four doors on my sports car has always entertained me, so M3 would be lots of fun. That said, since I only drive on the road, I don't see any sense in paying for more power than I have now so I suspect the M235i is more my cup of tea were I to go the BMW route. If I were looking for a used 911 I'd cross shop the M2

That said, between the M4 and C63s I would have to go C63s for two reasons - the AMAZING V8 in S form and the interior. I also think the Mercedes is a bit prettier in my view. If it were me and trying to keep the most diverse garage - I would probably keep the Vette - provided it is manual - and depending on whether you are going on tracks more than once a month . . . Do the M2. If not, Merc - but that said, I would probably go with something completely different for that second slot . . . Hope that provides some direction.

    Motoman, I drive a 2014 M235i, Central CA, and I'd actually choose an M3. I've always been about functionality and it sucks for people sitting in the back, which is why I won't take a 4th passenger . I can only imagine how that M2 drives, considering that the M235i is already a fun car to drive. And those fenders!! They accentuate the good proportions of the 2series coupe.

    I drive a 428i, am considering either M2 or M4 next time I buy, probably 2-3 years. Right now I'm leaning towards the m4 just because I like the looks better. I don't track cars and even the 428 is enough to get me into WAY too much trouble on the public roads so in the end I might stay away just to keep my drivers license..... Live in the USA.

    Nice review, I am on the list for the M2 at several dealers and can't wait to get it. I live in AZ, drive a 06 330i (E90) with 208,000 miles and still going strong. I prefer the size and ergonomics of the M2 (haven't driven one yet but have driven the M235i) and I think the M2 is an amazing value over the M4/3 so for me it is pretty easy. Also I just plain love the looks of this car.

    I'm a BMW 335i guy, and I'm a bit perplexed on this new M engine stuff. It would seem that they took the n54/n55 and improved cooling, changed a few parts and boom new "M" engine. I mean the compression is identical, the block is a little different nothing major. The power built by the M2 is nothing impressive when you consider a mild tune to an n54 meets that number. If you upgrade your intercooler, as well as radiator/fan and add the additional oil cooler offered in the BMW mppk you're making HUGE SAFE power and you can upgrade to M3 control arms for about $500, add limited slip for $1100, and you've transformed your 335i to a menacing beast on track and street! The new M cars look gorgeous and I'm sure electronics and luxury are way better but c'mon shouldn't these engines have been ground breaking and made me want to trade in my 335i and upgrade? Just my .02 cents.

    M2 (manual) all the way. It's the perfect size, the right amount of power and torque (plenty), beautifully balanced (I assume). The spiritual successor to the E46 M3. I drive (in summer) an E46 M3. I'm in Kelowna, B.C., Canada.

    Hey, Motorman! I love your channel. Enjoy the very details of your review. Fit me very very well. I had a 1985 325e brand new in high school. Alpine wheels, Komi shocks adj with knob, suspension technique sway bars. Then 89' 300zx, then 95' M3 after college own my restaurant. Now 3rd 911(996, 997 and 997.2 GT3RS). Okay. I love German engineering for my leisure driving, Japanese for work horse. Also I enjoyed owning the CayenneS for taking my 92 old mother out, comfy for her. Now, I think he new current 3 series getting to be kinda big. Well, human size are getting bigger and taller. But for sport sedan, it is too much weight to lug around. So, I sat in a one series at one time. I felt a bit cramp and cheap made. as I am 5'8" 160lbs. My 85' 325e was roomier. Therefore I like the size of my 95' M3. I have not seen the M2 live yet. But in your video or in picture it looks kinda stubby. She reminds me of a Short guy in steroid. Not too keen on the look..

    M2 vs M3 vs M4: For me, the answer is M3 although with M2 close behind. I appreciate the smaller more nimble package of the M2, but from a practicality standpoint, I have a wife and 3 young kids so I need 4 doors. All said, I'm in the midwest where winters can be brutal so AWD is always a consideration. I currently have a 2007 Volvo S60R as my daily driver... extensively modified (turbo, exhaust, tune, intercooler, swaybars, etc). Also, as someone who develops powertrain systems at a major auto OEM, I can tell you that cooling these engines is precisely where it's at... it takes a lot to hot lap a car and not reach critical fluid temps. I'm not at all surprised to see so many heat exchangers on the M2. Trying to convince management why this is necessary when they see the pricetag for such a system... that's always a challenge!

    Take the M2 hands down I'm so head over heels for the Damm thing. reason being I just love the size and the agility of the 2 series I couldn't care less about a back seat. but I still need a decent trunk and unlike the 135i I get that with the M2 . I drive an 07 Monte Carlo but I work at BMW gallery Norwood Massachusetts and drive the M235 all the time and I am so in love with it any time I have to run out for something that's my go to car! my dealer has 5 M2's on order and 4 are pre-sold and I can't wait to drive that 5th one. also like I said before I hail from new England and I'd love to own the M2 but I'll just have to settle for the M235 so I can have AWD I'll probably just tune the car to get similar power

  • @hankolerd

    I would choose this over an M4. Mostly it comes down to size and fun. The M2 from these early reviews seems to strike a good balance between chassis and engine that made the first M3 so special. I currently drive a 1990 M3 as a weekend car and a 2011 6sp manual RWD 328i Sport Wagon as my daily driver (1 of 429 such equipped e91's in the US). I live in Seattle. Thanks for posting these videos. I am scheduled for a special 2-day M Drivers School early next month and will be spending the two days in the M2, really looking forward to it!
    I would take the M2 without the sunroof and a set of Recaro Pole Position seats. And at some point down the line install a few of Dinan's goodies that are sure to follow.

    I'll choose the M2 above the m3 and the m4, because the driving dynamics would be better in a compact car even if it has a smaller engine (callin a 3.0 little inline 6 "small engine" lol), also the looks of this car are really agressive and mena, maybe other kind of rims would be better, but it really looks great, probably one of the best coupes around the block. I drive my dad's 2008 volkswagen jetta that my he gave me for my 20th birthday to be my daily car ( more like everyday car), so because we also had another vw in the family before the jetta, i always have a little bit of appeal to german cars. Btw, i live in Lima, Perú, so seeing M models, AMG, or any of high end sports cars it's always exciting. =)

    Have owned a m235i since its release (dallas, tx). Love the m235i and was expecting the m2 to be louder but who knows it will probably sound better in person. The look definitely kills the m235i with the wider stance and more aggressive diffuser/front bumper. M3/m4 sound amazing even with the pumped interior sound.

    I'd say I'd much prefer the M2 over the M4. I'm back in the market for a RWD manual sports car to use as my daily. The M2 will likely be $15-$20k cheaper vs. a well-equipped M4, the dimensions and weight seem a better fit for the power train, the driving dynamics will be better with the shorter wheel base, it's new and will be unique on the road at least for the next 12 months, and I personally think the design (especially the front-end) is better executed on the M2 as a total package. I currently drive a 2015 Grand Cherokee Altitude (was living in Michigan dealing with terrible winters) and relocated to Central Florida a few months ago.

    I'd pick the M2 any day because it represents what M should be (aside from the DCT). This is as close to pure driving pleasure as we can get with BMW currently. It's not about what you can afford. If you even have to ask yourself if you can afford an M3/M4, then you shouldn't be looking at an M2 in the first place in my opinion. The M2 is for the purist.
    As far as M BMWs go, I currently have an E39 M5 and an E30 M3. The M3 just spun a rod bearing :'( but even though it has roughly half the power of the M5, I'd say its just as much fun, but in a different way of course. Located in FL/PA.

    MotoMan fell in Love!
    I completely agree regarding the flared fenders & I couldn't have said it better my self! No one makes flared fenders like BMW, no one! What you look at dem fenders, what a masterpiece.
    The M2 is incredible machine, preforms the part, sounds the part & looks the part! You can't have that trifecta in many cars these days anymore…
    You picked one excellent spot to the do the shooting M!
    Loved the showcase CGIs, they were a nice touch.
    I'd definitely have the M2 over the M4 family … unless they build an M4 version of the Gran Coupe, then I might reconsider lol
    I'd have mine in Sakhir Orange, Merino Caramel Leather with Brown Honey Walnut veneer, Black Alcantara headliner & M Crossspoke 101 dubs … BMW individual to the rescue ;)
    As for the why, for some reason I never liked the M3 Coupe (now M4), I just can't get my self to like it.
    That slow-mo shot at the corkscrew is epic!

    I'd choose the M2, even though I still wish they'd stuffed the M4's S55 into it. I prefer smaller cars because I like that feeling of the car being wrapped around you as opposed to you being in a big voluminous space (I'm 6'0" but I still try to cram myself into small cars), and even though it doesn't weigh much less than the M4, it definitely seems like it's the peppier, more entertaining car with its shorter wheelbase. The interior looks fine to me, but then again interior is really not a high priority to me when it comes to sporty cars. The driving is what matters most and this car seems like it's just more fun if you take other things into consideration beyond mashing the gas pedal. As for my cars, I drive an '02 BMW Z3M Coupe and an '80 Corvette.
