    Thank you for the video and the review. Enjoying my 124270. It’s definitely not a large watch, but on a 6.5” wrist, I think it’s perfect. Take the superior movement with classic looks, stainless steel Rolex that has rock-solid value, and the versatility of wearing with anything from sport shorts to 3 piece suit I’m thrilled I was able to get one so quickly. Your experience 100% mirrors my own.
    3 weeks ago, I went to a Rolex AD, and I really liked a 2-tone, 36 Datejust...
    I stood there in the shop, wanting to walk out with it, but I struggled with 36, because, my other watches are all 40+.
    It's a generational thing: older generations were used to the 36 as the standard, and our generation is used to 40+.
    After nearly a month, this size now feels appropriate, and when I bring out my larger watches...they feel REALLY huge.
    I still love them all, but I'll definitely say this 36 Datejust has recalibrated my own preferences and tolerances for moderately-sized watches, by historical standards.
    Cheers.

    I 100% agreed with your sentiment about the watch being something you could comfortably wear ALL day. I have similar wrist size (6.25"), and I've been eyeing several Rolex watches between 36 and 41mm. While the 41 certainly looks nice, there is something cool about the subtle and understated nature of the 36mm, at least for me. Maybe I'm not a fan of attracting a lot of attention, but I feel comfortable wearing a compact, quality piece that looks fitted on my wrist.

      @aussieexpat  Před 3 lety +1

      Absolutely. I mean, it's undeniably fun to be sporting something MAXed out and flashy from time to time, but maybe that's not the right balance of concerns for an every day watch. With the explorer being the only watch only available in a smaller size now, it gives us permission to enjoy a 36mm in a world for 40+ monsters.

    I have the 39, but got the call from my AD on the 36 so now have both. I have a 6.75" wrist, so the upper ends of my comfort level is 38/40. I do find on the Explorer that I prefer the 39 vs the 36. My wife on the other hand loves 36's in general, so I bought her some colorful Barton Straps and now she wears the 36 Explorer. If I could customize an Explorer just for me, i would go with a 38 ; unfortunately the rolex world doesn't roll that way, so you pick the one that you think is best for you. If my wrist were slightly smaller, I would probably prefer the 36. If it were bigger I would probably prefer a massive Panerai :).

    I felt the same buying a 36mm black bay. I thought I needed at least a 39mm watch for my medium size wrist and my stout, slightly overweight frame. Now I gravitate towards that watch everyday. It sits neat and tidy on the wrist; Feels unobtrusive without coming off weightless and dainty. the Black bay 36/ explorer 36 have the same flavor in my opinion. Sporty yet sophisticated. Large and hefty enough to have perceivable presence without feeling chunky and bloated. I’d even make an argument for a retro sized submariner now that I’ve seen the light of a sub 39mm watch.

    • @davidrichter3681
      @davidrichter3681 Před 3 lety

      That was a stupid thing for Rolex to do. Today the style is bigger watches. The Submariner they made 1mm bigger and making the Explorer 3mm smaller makes no sense. I like the 39mm better which was already smaller than the Submariner. It is now the size of a dress watch instead of a sports watch. I would rather get a Datejust 36mm or an Omega Seamaster Aquaterra 38mm version.

    • @aussieexpat
      @aussieexpat  Před 3 lety

      @@davidrichter3681 The overall market is actually slimming down a bit. Note the marked popularity of the bb58.
      The new Sub despite being billed at 41mm is technically only .2mm bigger, but overall projects a more slender look than the outgoing super case 116610.
      So the explorer returning to 36mm is another step towards a line up with more slender / classic looks.
      I'm going to guess the GMT eventually adopts the less bulky looking proportions of the new Submariner eventually and the milgause retires or is completely redesigned.

  • @alanchappell4845
    @alanchappell4845 Před 9 měsíci

    You seem to have a 'round' six inch wrist as opposed to a flat oval wrist so this watch looks just right from lug to lug on your wrist, whereas the submariner looks too long lug to lug, but you seem to wear the bracelet quite loose which apparently leads to more wear in the bracelet link pins? and one or other lug tends to hang out from the wrist when worn with a loose bracelet.
    I recently acquired the new 2023 40mm Explorer which is actually about 38.5 mm in reality when measured from the crown to the other side and as I have a very flat oval wrist at 6.75 inches, it looks okay as I have been wearing a 42 X 12mm mm Tag F1 for the past eleven years, which now looks a little clumsy compared to the Explorer as diver bezelled watches do seem to sit on top of a wrist rather than more sunk in like an Explorer with its sloping lugs and polished conical bezel.

      The explorer has become my number one watch as I feel a more elegant less in your face watch is what I want in most situations.
      Take a few photos of the watch on your wrist and look at them. That's what struck me first, how it looked in photos was much more pleasing initially than with my eyes alone.

    It's my grail watch. I'm wearing a Tisell Explorer at 40mm as a placeholder until I can find and buy this Explorer from an AD in the UK. I've got a Rolex store opening very close by, so fingers are crossed!
    In the meantime I can sort of compare the Tisell to my SARB035 (38mm) and my Dad's very old Seiko SQ (36mm). I prefer the smaller sized watches and I have a 7.25" wrist.
    I think the smaller dial and case tell me "master craftsmen shoe-horned an automatic movement and these engineered hands and batons into this small space", whereas the bigger (especially the dinner-plate sized) watches can be built by any old fashion house building from a Chinese parts bin to lower tolerances. It might not be true, but that's the *feeling* I get.
    There's a place for big, even 'statement' watches (I have some chunkier models already) but for one understated watch to last a lifetime, this one seems perfect to me.

I need 1 more millimetre for the perfect fit in all weather and the 3mm clasp holes and 5mm easylink are just way too much. I've stopped wearing it because I'm not enjoying it anymore. I wore the explorer loose for a year with an entire link too much and it was nice. I did remove a link recently and now it's a little more normal. But slightly loose is what I think this should be happenning for this piece. It's very light, so it doesn't need to hug the wrist. But agree. easylink is nice, but it needs to be less than 5mm. Some people will disagree by how small, I think 3mm, but a rolex glidelock is 2mm increments but I usually use 3 different settings on my sub. Implying perhaps 6mm of range is actually correct....

Bought a 41 datejust (rhodium dial, jubilee, smooth bezel), but just don't love it. It sits on my bedside and I wind it before bed every other day or so. My wrist is bigger than yours, but I do love the simplicity of the EXP 1. Hope to get one on my wrist soon to look at it and feel it. It's true the going from a larger watch to a smaller watch is alway disorienting for at least a day as your eye adjusts to the new diameter. Happy you love this one so much. I just got rid of a Pelagos LHD and I regret it. Seeing this 3 watch quiver of yours makes me miss it more. Do you wear that blue Pelagos as a beater/fun watch? • @aussieexpat

      The pelagos would logically be a beater in my collection but since I actually where the sub 41 more, with the pelagos blue being a "weekend" watch, the pelgos is pretty minty. But my wife says the pelagos suits me more.
      Unless you've got strong emotional attachment to the sub, I'd say prepare for it to be replaced as an edc. I'll certainly post here if I stop wearing the explorer... but its just so much nicer to wear and honestly.. it looks better. The only place the sub wins is flash, which kinda means it's only a "going out watch". Which maybe is better to get a bluesy or root beer for such occasion...
