    It is called three sisters because It is made from corn, two varieties of beans, and a squash. The corn stalk gives something for the beans to climb on. The beans take nitrogen from the air and put it in the ground for the corn and squash. The squash growing around the mound prevent weeds and preserves moisture for all three of them. Also the corn and squash need the nitrogen that the beans put in the ground to grow and make better and bigger squash and corn because of the nitrogen.

    During the Irish Famine the Choctaws Nation on hearing of the plight and hunger of the Irish people in 1847, they raised $170 to send to the Irish people and ease their suffering. This figure is equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars in today’s currency.. Both were communities who had fallen foul of the conquests of others which had in turn led to loss of property, forced migration and exile, mass starvation, and cultural suppression most notably language.

      +veronicadredd22 The Choctaw are, generally speaking, a great Nation. Not only did they help the Irish, it was their code talkers that baffled the Nazis, and they were the first Native American tribe to build their own hospital. They have a ~huge~ economic impact, particularly in Durant where they are headquartered and run a massive resort casino. My employer does business with the Choctaw Nation and we're honored to do so.

    They call corn pole beans and squash the 3 sisters because the native Americans grew them together. The pole beans used the corn as a pole to grow on while providing the corns soil with nitrogen. The squash was planted amongst them to act as ground cover so the soil didn't dry out as fast.

    I use the Three Sisters method in my own garden every season. It is also called companion planting. Originally, it was corn, beans, and squash. The corn provided it's stalk, so the beans could climb up it. This eliminates the need for poles. The beans provide nitrogen to the soil for all of the plants to use. And, the squash had big leaves, so it shades the ground, so that weeds don't grow. It really is a great way to set up your garden!

    The soup is called three sisters because of the way the Native Americans planted the squash, corn, and beans together. They would make a row of small mounds of dirt, plant the corn and beans in the center of the mounds, so the beans grow up the corn stalks. The squash would be planted around the base so its leaves would protect the roots.

      Sherlock Holmes We don't worship plants, we give thanks to spirits, the spirits give us the plants to help us. I believe, I can't speak for every other first nations people, that everything has a spirit. Good spirits want us to be healthy and happy, we just recognize that we are a small part of the earth and without the plants and animals we wouldn't be able to live. This view helps show us that we are no better or worse then the other spirits and by seeing that we realize that we should also be good stewards of the world around us. So I guess you could simplify it to worshiping plants, I would rather worship the world around me then to believe it is there only to serve me and has no worth other then what I can exploit it for.

      @SherlockHolmes000 Před 8 lety +2

      Earthmoover It has no worth to you, other than what you make of it. The spirits do not exist, and they most definitely to not aid anything specifically. You are constantly killing other living things in order to survive, just like anything else must. Perhaps if the spirits were truly helping your people, then you might have provided a mighty and lasting civilization like Rome, rather than an Empire of sticks and plants.

      +Sherlock Holmes we have been around for 40,000 years. my tribe had one of the most extensive trade networks in the world. the largest pyramid ever built is in Missouri. preeuropean migration some estimates put native people's populations at 100 million plus. the only thing that brought our down fall was helping the settlers that couldn't survive on their own. if you honestly think that natives aren't around anymore I can't convince you, but the only weakness we showed was honesty and good will.

    Three sisters soup is the way all corn, bean stalk, and squash all grow and work together. The corn grows tall and long, while the squash covers the floor of the corn stalk to keep the soil moist for the corn's roots. The bean grows up the corn stalk and nourishes the soil for the squash. Its actually a really nice Native American story about the soup.
    "Corn, grew tall and straight in the field around the village, but the hot sun dried her feet and made her suffer. In addition, the earth grew less nourishing each year that she stood there. Here sister, Squash, laid herself at Corn's feet and protected her by keeping the soil moist and cool. However, it was difficult for Squash to receive any moisture. Corn's straight leaves caught the rain and funnelled the rainwater to the centre for her to drink. To help her sister, Corn relaxed the ends of her leaves to allow some of the rain to fall to the ground and nourish her sister. Bean, was so weak and thin that she could not support herself at all. However, she could do something very special. Bean could make her own nourishment in the soil, and this food became very valuable for all three of the sisters. Corn grew tall and allowed Bean to grow up towards the sun. Soon all three of the sisters were growing strong. The people of the village saw how these three sisters worked together to live in harmony."

    • @debstacey4785
      @debstacey4785 Před 8 lety +3

      +Sherlock Holmes their culture and livelihood being decimated had nothing to do with their growing of food. They cultivated crops to get the most out of the soil and resources available. If you have an opportunity to ever try the recultivated three sisters corn, it is amazing, and was almost lost to history. Whether or not other groups were bigger or stronger, the natives knew what they were doing.

    • @SherlockHolmes000
      @SherlockHolmes000 Před 8 lety

      Deb Roohr I have lived among the Natives for years, and I find most of their practices to be unbelievably poor, and almost laughable considering how long they had to advance yet didn't.
      Egyptians had mastered irrigation, glass work, metallurgy, writing, architecture, and even knew how to cultivate crops to get the most out of the soil, over *4,000 years before the Natives even touched an iron tool that they didn't even produce*
      Now don't get me wrong, there are one or two things that the natives did which was fairly neat, but certainly not important. I'm rather quite sick of Afrocentrism and native history taking over most forms of historical education, as though Zulu tribes and Back Foot are even remotely as necessary as an education of Rome, or Greece, or Egypt. Even the cannibalistic people of Ireland when they wore loin cloths were more advanced than the natives here.

    • @SherlockHolmes000
      @SherlockHolmes000 Před 8 lety

      Deb Roohr Oh please. Do you have any idea how over-emphasized an education in native American 'history' is in American colleges? And it would be almost adorable if it weren't for the fact that it is required learning for some reason. Last time I looked at a college catalog, there is almost no education in civilized history. No Rome, no Greece, no Egypt, no China, nothing of the sort. Instead we see Native American history, all 100 years of it.

    Pemmican is not a normal daily food. It's something you take on long trips away from home or maybe eat in the dead of winter. Anyhow, in situations like that, one of the hardest nutrients to come by is simply calories, which is why the fat is so great. Also, if it's in winter, vegetable and fruit type stuff is hard to come by and some pemmican is made with dried berries so there's a source of fruit (but it doesn't keep as long as 100% animal-based pemmican).

The squash also acts as a mulch again by shading the earth underneath it and retains moisture in the soil. It's a great system.

      +Heidi Williams Yes, and they are complimentary to each other in other ways too. Corn heavily depletes the soil, but beans actually enrich the soil by releasing nitrogen so that the corn can be grown even in poor soil when planted together with the beans, and the squash acts as a natural mulch to shade the soil and block out weeds. Everyone should try growing these together in their lifetime, it is ridiculously easy to get good results when you plant the three sisters together and you'll feel like a gardening god! I don't plant corn anymore, but I have an 8 x 8 garden where I plant only bush beans and squash and I get an almost summer-long harvest.

  • @blanchekonieczka9935
    @blanchekonieczka9935 Před 6 lety

    Traditionally the three sisters were corn, squash and beans. Clusters of crops were grown on a flat top mound together. The beans set nitrogen in the soil (corn is a heavy nitrogen feeder and squash likes nitrogen too), the corn provided something for the bean vines to climb and the squash (which has many leaves) shaded the soil like a living mulch.

    Two cultures that besides mine, I adore to the soul. Native American and Irish. My deceased son was half Samoan (Pacific Islander) like me, and from his father... Irish, and Native American (Choctaw, Paiute, Lakota). This was a funny taste tester.

    The three sisters (corn, beans, and squash) are a really cool subject, how they all work together when planted together as crops...the beans use the corn stalks to climb and add nitrogen to the soil, and the squash cover the ground and keep away weeds and pests with their hairy leaves. It's perfect.

    Also fry bread is the shiz-nit. Best part of having been a kid in Arizona was easy access to that fried goodness.

    3 sisters , is how they’re grown together , the corn stalk grows and gives the bean a place to grow up on, the squash or pumpkin covers the grown and helps keep the water and nutrients for all of them
