I made the mistake of turning away from church services all because I couldn't speak in tongues like the rest. I was taught that to be filled with His Spirit that I should speak in tongues. I was a teen trying to force myself. I know better now but, how sad it is to teach babies (no matter what age) in the Lord that they're not fully saved unless they speak in tongues. I'm still confused about it and I'm in my 30s now.

I say this because often times we criticize based on what we think is happening. But there are actually testimonies of those who were praying in tongues amongst the learned, and they thought they were speaking in tongues of angels because that's what they were taught tongues are...but then someone tells them they are speaking in a real foreign language.

@@BEABEREAN10 when Paul wrote "If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing."
the phrase "with tongues of men and of angels" he is speaking in extremes
notice the second part: if i know all mysteries and all knowledge
can Paul really know ALL mysteries and ALL knowledge? no, he's simply illustrating extremes
so many charismatics find these kinds of verses to latch onto and interpret it in a way to justify their flaky doctrine that rests on an interpretation that hasn't been in the church for a millennium and a half, but 100 years ago, someone interpreted those verses in a way to convince people that everyone can have tongues and the idea of a "private prayer language"
another popular doctrine is eisegeting the tongues that happen at some places when people speak in tongues after receiving the Spirit but in some instances, tongues aren't mentioned
and other instances, the people receiving the Spirit prophesy AND speak in tongues
they disregard the prophesying and the instances where tongues aren't mentioned and focus solely on tongues and use that example as a prescriptive text when its actually descriptive
at the end of the day, Paul writes: "do all speak in tongues? do all prophesy? " no, we are members of the body with different gifts and purpose, not everyone is a foot or an ear or an eye, if everyone was an eye, how would we hear and vice versa

I understand that this topic is quite controversial and can be very divisive. I believe that a healthy dose of 1st Corinthians 13:1-7 definitely needs to be applied when there are differences of opinions among brethren. I try to approach scripture as honest and unbiased as I can. Meaning not being swayed by personal, denominational, traditional influences but simply letting the scriptures speak for themselves and praying The Holy Spirit gives me understanding. I have no personal agenda in sharing in this topic other than understanding and applying Gods Word. That being said, to me it doesn't seem Paul is actually negating nor forbidding speaking in tongues but rather highlighting prophecy which edifies the church. He is contrasting these two gifts in terms of which is more beneficial within the church setting. Paul writes in 14:2 "For he that speaks in a tongue(In this case meaning a "unknown" tongue) speaks not to men, but to God: For no one understands him; however in the spirit he speaks mysteries." I don't believe that Paul means this symbolically. It seems the statement in verse 2 indicates that the one speaking in a tongue is actually speaking to God. " speaks not to men, but to God." In verse 5 Paul writes " I wish all of you spoke in tongues, but even more that you prophesied." "The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified." It appears to me that Paul is not addressing the legitimacy of this particular gift, but rather the misappropriation of it. It does not seem Paul is negating nor forbidding speaking in tongues but simply emphasizing prophecy as it builds up the church. Paul writes in verse 13 that the one who speaks in another tongue in a church setting should pray that he may interpret. The context clearly shows that Paul is addressing the exercise of the gift in church assembly. In verses 14 and 15 it seems Paul is equating praying in another tongue with praying in spirit. Being that his "understanding is unfruiful" he will pray with the spirit AND with his understanding. Again it doesn't seem Paul is negating speaking in "unknown" tongues. Note in verse 18 Paul writes " I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, in order to teach others also, than ten thousand words in another tongue." Paul gives further instructions and clarity 14:27,28. " If anyone speaks in another tongue, there are to be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and let someone interpret." " But there be no interpreter, that person is to keep silent in the church, speaking to himself and God." From these scriptures it does not appear that Paul is downplaying this particular gift nor seeing it as simply gibberish. He does address the proper use of tongues and maintaining order in the church. I pray that we won't get entangled in constant debates over topics that do not affect one's salvation. Rather we will be focused on fulfilling the commission Jesus has given us in Matthew 28:18-20😇

However, if the leader of the church I.E the pastor is using this gibberish to edify himself. It is directly effecting the salvation of his parishioners spirits. It also works to clear the mind, or the airways so to speak. I seem to hear his better.
I have been only in two churches on one occasion each where Paul's method with two or three speaking in tongues and one interpreter was used.
It is very clear and powerful, and Paul's instructions are simple.
What is wrong with the churches I don't know, but sometimes there are many distractions.

If we start back in the book of Acts 1 all the way to the day of Pentecost, we will see that it was talking ONLY to the Apostles when the gifts were spoken of. It uses the term "THEY", meaning the Apostles because "THEY" we're the only ones that Jesus promised these "MIRACULOUS GIFTS" to. If only believers can speak I tongues, why wasn't there anyone in scripture speaking in tongues besides those that were touched by an Apostle who could confer the gift. If we could think of tongues as English, Spanish, Greek, Hebrew, etc, then we could easily dismiss this manmade tongues that we hear today. Once the Apostles laid the foundation, their jobs were done which means we no longer need them or speaking in tongues bcuz we now have the written word of God so that everyone can understand in his own language. May God open the eyes of those truly seeking the truth on this matter.....Amen

The challenge is that there are two primary ways the gift of tongues is expressed and they must be inferred from the text as the two are not plainly demarcated. The easiest distinction is that there are tongues given in public and tongues prayed in private. A public utterance in tongues accompanied by an interpretation is, for all intents and purposes, a prophetic utterance. A public prophesy edifies all who hear it. As others have mentioned, one who prays in tongues is praying out mysteries as the Spirit wills. Do you have any mysteries in your life? Who do you marry, what job should you have, are just a couple of examples. I'm sure you can think of others either from your own life or someone you know. Praying in tongues in private is said to edify one's self. It's because one or more mysteries are being prayed about. You are edified because you are praying the answer, not the question.

I think that bit of scripture is saying speak tongues at home, and also in church, but quietly because God is a God of order. Unless the Spirit has a message for the church.
I saw this the first time I went to a Pentecostal Church, or maybe second or third service.
The pastor said the Spirit had something he wanted to say. One or two people spoke loudly in tongues, maybe one after the other. Then someone interpreted. (There was someone who needed to come up front for prayer, for a particular reason, according to the Spirit that day.)
So that was done Biblically. Impressive for me as a Catholic. If anyone spoke in tongues in a Catholic church, it would have been at a home meeting, and very few if any had the gift. I believe it was seldom a man, they felt it was for women.
Never, ever have I heard of Tongues spoken in a Catholic church service or in the sanctuary where the pews or pulpit were. Perhaps it was done in the church building itself, but I've not heard of it.
If they are finally going to start with Tongues in RCC, it will be to deceive people into thinking they finally have changed. There is no love for Jesus or the Spirit in the heierarchy of that church. They may tolerate it for a while to use it to draw people in.
But the best advice to Catholics is to *come out from among them that you not partake in their sin*

Though I am more of a cessationalist, I see the miraculous gifts as not given to any person but God gives them "the gifts" temporary for certain situation. For example, I do no believe anyone has the gift of healing but I do believe that God still heals today and that He uses us and our faith to do it. That is completely different than the "gift of healing" as Peter had the gift and his shadow healed others. For languages, no one is the "gift of languages" but there are plenty of stories of missionaries speaking in their own language and the people can understand him, even though they do not speak the same language.
Basically, the gifts were used for the foundation of the church so no one is "gifted" in that way anymore. However, God still uses them today through others, just not as a "here is the gift of healing that you can use whenever you want" type way.

What is the difference between the function of the early church and the church of today ? Were the people of the early church under a New Covenant and we under a new New Covenant where the benefits are less than those under the covenant God had with Paul and the early church ? If the benefits (gifts etc ) are not the same then the church of today cannot be that same church of the Lord Jesus Christ. The signs He promised in Mark 16:15-17 are still evident today and based on that demonstration of the supernatural , Hindus , powerful Satanists and unbelievers come to Christ. Were people possessed by demons in the days of the Bible ? Yes. Did the members of the early church cast those demons out ? Yes. Do we still have demon possessed people today ? Yes. Did the Holy Ghost cease the gift of miracles ( that is to cast out evil spirits ). and allow Satan`s demons to destroy people ? So it is okay now for Satan to continue with his work but God ceased with the gifts that USED to destroy the work of Satan ! Why did God stop while Satan continues ? And when did the gifts started to cease...give some date please?

what did Jesus tell Thomas? John 20: 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26 After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then He *said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? If you never read the Bible and let others unbiblical theology dictate their reasoning and interpretation than you would be correct.
Here is your fallacy. Inconsistent understanding of the scripture.
[Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body [a]to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.]
Verse 1 thru 3, talks about the difficulty of doing things. 1 being easy, 2 being very hard, 3 you can only do it once at a cost of everything. Verse #1 is separate sentence but if you want to lock at context please look at full context not just partial context.
1 - as being easy since it everyone can talk [talk is cheap phrase come to mind?]. Now, can you hear “sounding brass or a clanging cymbal“ then how is that an hypothetical comparison. You have to go out of your way to circumvent the context to avoid angelic language. You have to say that it is impossible to speak in angelic language or it doesn't exist. You can hear brass or cymbal so its fair comparison to to actual real spoken languages [meaning of verse is speaking in manly or angelic languages without love is just making noise].
2 - very difficult and given to very few. Once person gets to heaven, all the mysteries are disclosed (verse 8), does Paul know the an individual who when to heaven, yes. Does Jesus mention that faith can move mountains? Yes. Just because someone has the faith to move mountains doesn't mean he must move mountains to prove his faith. [Since miracles by faith isn't your own doing, it is nothing]
      3. - it that you can only do it once. Why would Paul bring up example that were humanly impossible? Giving examples that humanly possible would be unbiblical! Can people for instance can give all their wealth away and their own life? Yes, you can only give your wealth away once, same as life on the altar. [ since you did not give out of love but did it for yourself; you gained nothing - the meaning of verse]
Now, convince me that your slicing and dicing the context in order to fit your theology is better! Your logic is half the first verse is only possible(tongues of men), second verse must be impossible, and third verse we have to be silent in order for our theology to flow smooth! When you take full context and it is 3 verse not just two verses then your argument fall apart!
[ And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues] - Mark 16:17
Note: not foreign languages but NEW. Can you give me one example of new language?
[For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him;] 1 Corinthians 14:2
Note: “for no one understands him“, where does it say that one must be an earthly language?
Read Daniel Chapter 5 and let me know what language was the writing on the wall?
Do you concede that men can speak in angelic languages as it was plainly written in 1 Corinthians 13:1 or do you have better explanation without slicing and dicing context?

Anyway, if you believe and have no doubts, you can get the gift.
I had trouble with it at first, actually unconsciously started imitating someone else, and realized it a few months later. I asked around about it, persisted and a couple from Africa happened to be at church, the man spoke about the fire of the Holy Spirit. on minute 31:50 i feel very uncomfortable with your commentary that all English translations are not correct on what 1 Cor. 14:1 "really" means. reading my Bible in English the verse implies a comparison but your interpretation is that one should speak in tongues "so that or in order that you preach". you conclude that this is the interpretation faithful to the context. Question: My brother are you saying that all those who have learned Greek in all its semantics and have translated the Greek into English have not seen your version? All translations translate as a comparison.
on minute 34:03, to the question show me an example: i answer, Paul is a good example of one who is scripture spoke in tongues privately; in 1 Cor. 14:2 combining with what he says in verse 15 leads to the logical conclusion that Paul admits to speaking in tongues directed to God (praying with the spirit and not with the understanding. note he also admits to sing in the spirit) and not to men. in verse 6 he says he can't do so in church. if not in church where? in private - in the closet is where we speak to God.
Also, your reaction to Dr. Brown's commentary on verse 18 and 19 that it can't be for private use because you don't see anybody doing so in scripture is an admission that the scripture in this verses is alluding to private use but what you lack, however, is the example in scripture of someone who did so. the question is do we believe what scripture instructs only when we can see an example of one who practiced the imperative? I have a problem with that argument.
My two cents commentary on 1 Cor. 12 to 14 is that the opening and closing are hinges that we should not ignore. 1 Cor. 12:1, "... I do not want you to be ignorant" and 1 Cor. 14:39 "do not forbid speaking in tongues". These two show that this whole section is not intended to be used to stop speaking in tongues, but to give an understanding and a guideline of how the gifts manifest and how they are to be exercised especially in the congregation. forgive me if I offend but i pray that we can approach the text without bias, that is, having a premise and reading the text to agree with our premise.

1 Cor 14:5 I WOULD LIKE EVERYONE of you to speak in tongues. In the first place why would even God give us the gift of tongues if we don't need it? Prophecying is better and profitable for the body of church but it's God who gives. Just because we don't understand it, we have to reject it. Maybe we have a hidden weakness that the Holy Spirit is interceding for us, or something is going to happen that we need to pray for. Besides without our carnal understanding maybe the Holy Spirit is leading our souls to worship God Acts 2:11. BUT, the question really is, do all has the spirit of God? When we truly repent of our sins, acknowledge Jesus as our Saviour, and decide to submit to Him as our Lord, God forgives us and seal us with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, to cause us to be born again as new creations, people who are empowered to live holy lives for God. BUT, if one believes God is a very loving and understanding God and verbally declares that Jesus is Lord with the implied understanding that as God loved him/her as he/she was, then no changing of lifestyle is going to happen. That's continued rebellion against God who wants us to turn away from sins. Will the Holy Spirit indwell someone who rebels against the will of God and who doesn't want and need His holiness? Who is the father of rebellion?, whose spirit would be in the rebellious?

I really like your channel, great videos they have been helping me a lot. But I don't know if I completely agree. I fo eith the first half or so but I do believe there is a distinction of the tongues. Those described in Acts seem to be earthly languages that were to show that God would pour out His Spirit on all believers not just the Jews. And also for the furthering of the gospel among those who don't speak the common language. However, in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14 (especially 14) the tongues described there is one Paul says that only God can understand not even the person speaking (for their understanding is unfruitful) and he earnestly ask them that they pray they may be interpreted so that the church can be edified. I don't think those are earthly languages to others it may sound like babbling but God understands it. And the fact that they are speaking these tongues presumably in the presence of other believers that speak the language they do then there would be no need of the tongues spoken about in Acts among people who can already speak the same language. Who would it be ministering to? The same chapter goes on to say tongues are a sign to unbelievers. So I want some clarity on that. But great video, I agree mostly but not completely.

What seems to be continually overlooked or misunderstood or misinterpreted about tongues is this: There is OTHER TONGUES as in Acts 2 -4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
There is also UNKNOWN TONGUES - 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
So they are trying to put them both together. Each is for different reason. All people will not speak in tongues. This cannot be used as a gauge to say that someone has the Holy Spirit. =Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

One simply must confess Jesus (that He is the Son of God) and believe in one's heart that God raised Him from the dead, one will be saved. It's that simple. No cartwheels or backflips. Just confess and believe.

Cloven tongues of fire that came upon the disciples was the gift of not only the ability of speaking the word of God, but also the talent to rightly divide the word of truth.
    Acts 2:3
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
    (cloven) is divided.
(tongues of fire) is the word of God.
    (cloven):
    Deuteronomy 14:7
Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney: for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.
    (word as fire):
    2 Samuel 22:
[7] In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
[8] Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
[9] There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
    Jeremiah 23:29
Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
    Jeremiah 5:14
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
    Jeremiah 20:9
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.
    Jeremiah 5:14
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
    Acts 2:
[3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
    Acts 4:31
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

I think many get the gift of the Holy Ghost mixed up with the gift of tongues. That's the problem!
When one is born again like in Acts they will speak in tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance.
The gift of the Holy Ghost that comes with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues is one thing and the gift of Tongues itself with all the other gifts in Corinthians is another.
    Same Spirit, different administrations.
Acts 2:33, Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now SEE AND HEAR.
Is the gift of the Holy Ghost for all? Acts 2:39, For the promise, is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Acts 5:32, And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
We can't get Acts mixed up with 1 Corinthians. Corinthians is talking about different GIFTS, like the gift of healings, the gift of tongues, etc. We know everybody doesn't get these gifts.
The Gift of the Holy Ghost is not mentioned there. Do all speak with tongues or in other words, do all have the gift of tongues, NO! But all will speak in tongues when they first receive the GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST, not the GIFT OF TONGUES.
Acts 2:33 lets one see what happens when one receives the Holy Ghost, not the gift of tongues.
You need two or three witnesses to prove a point.
    Acts 2:4, 10:44-48, 1:1-6.
1 Corinthians 14:2, For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
I don't see where anybody including those on the day of Pentecost was preaching to the people in tongues.
Acts 2:11, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
I believe to receive the promise of the Holy Ghost one has to first get in the Spirit where God is.
John 4:24, God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
I believe if you stay before God long enough to get in the Spirit, you will receive it the same way. It took me a while in giving up and staying before God until I got in the Spirit.
Paul was not just a chosen vessel to the Gentiles, but kings and the children of Israel. Acts 9:15.
I just have to ask have you received the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance? Have you obeyed Acts 2:38?

My explanation of chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians, is what the Greek indicates. Paul is clearly contrasting known languages (Greek, Hebrew, Latin, etc) vs an ecstatic/ babbling that no one understood. Paul is clear that the purpose of these languages being spoken is to benefit the body, and so if no one understands him then that goes counter to what Paul says is the reason for tongues/languages and any other spiritual gift.

      ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:13-14‬
Therefore we can conclude it is of no benefit to pray in tongues if you don’t know what you are even saying. You are taking verse 4 out of context. Paul is not viewing speaking in tongues privately as a good thing in 1 Cor 14. The whole of Chapter 14 is dealing with the fact that speaking in tongues without interpretation is no good whether done publicly or privately and that prophecy is better than tongues and should be the more sought after gift.
      This continues further with this:
“So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.”
      ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:22‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

Nowhere in all of scripture is there a " heavenly language " nor a selfish gift.
Paul was making a point to those with understanding, those who understand that ALL GIFTS were given to edify others; so if you say you have a gift meant for you then your gift is not of God.
Paul is saying you must put 2 and 2 together: If
1-All gifts are for the edification of others. BUT
you say your edifying yourself then there's a problem.
Paul is telling the Corinthians that without understanding and interpretation there is no gift and anyone who says they have the gift of tongues ( languages) but has no understanding and seeks personal edification should stay quiet.

I am not Charismatic. I was going to Word of Faith churches when I was first saved. A pastor prayed over me to receive "tongues", but it never happened. With that said, I have some sincere questions, as I know true brothers and sisters in Christ who practice what they call their "personal prayer language" tongues, both in the Charismatic churches and in other Bible teaching churches.
    1) Is it possible, that Paul was acknowledging in 1 Corinthians 14 that there is a legitimate, ecstatic language? Granted, the language and the way it was practiced was in a pagan manner by the baby Christians of Corinth as when he says that the Corinthians were speaking mysteries in the spirit, (little "s" spirit - not by the Holy Spirit), and when Paul says that it edifies the person. He also says to the Corinthians that they "indeed give thanks well" but no one else is edified because no one can understand them.
    2) Since they were brothers and sisters in Christ, they were not cursing God, but could it be that they, in their lack of knowledge, were speaking to God by their own spirit? Paul is saying that it was making them feel good, but it wasn't helping anyone else. I have heard that when people speak in that ecstatic language, it bypasses a person's mind. It puts someone in a sort of trance.
    3) Is the spirit Paul refers to in v .14 his spirit, rather than the Holy Spirit? Paul says he prays with tongues (languages) and he seems to contrast that with praying in a tongue (ecstatic utterance). He says in v. 14 "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful". Notice how when Paul says, "my spirit" he is not talking about the Holy Spirit, as there is no capital "s" and he refers to the spirit as his when he says "my spirit".
In addition, it seems as if Paul is saying that he speaks with different languages more than the people of Corinth. What they are doing (in their time of ecstatic praying) is not evil, or wrong per se, but in the assembly they are causing confusion. Even when Paul prays in his spirit, not the Holy Spirit (which it seems that he has experienced), he acknowledges that he is speaking only to God, that he doesn't even understand what he is saying. Not evil, not cursing God, but pagan in origin, and not something to be practiced in the church service, unless it is a language that can be interpreted.
    Please advise....Thanks!
