Dental implants are the most expensive treatment that you can get at the dentist, but how long should dental implants last?
The truth is that they do not last forever.
In this video, we will look at the different ways that dental implants can fail, and some ways that we can make them last longer.
Meet me on other socials: linktr.ee/dr.sehmi (including consultations)
Over the years, we have had dental implant failures due to the implants fracturing, gum disease around dental implants, and cosmetic failures due to less-than-perfect dental implant placement.

Lost 2 front upper teeth when I was seventeen from the bandit's knuckle-duster. The implants were my salvation. I was able to install them only when I was 26 (complex and expensive case). But still, I was so happy when I got them. Almost 10 years since then. Like you said got one time a crown broken on business trip) Fixed it temporarily myself with a dental solution from a pharmacy. Otherwise, no problem. Almost 10 years. Implants is the best thing happened in the dental indusry ever.

I have implants for many years, and all are perfect. Keep them clean, regular dental checks, stay away from cigarettes, have a good diet and they will last. I spent too much money on efforts to keep some teeth going as long as possible, but it was a mistake. Keeping teeth that are ultimately unviable is probably a waste of time and money. I feel I should have got the three implants I eventually got much sooner than I did. Not arguing that implants are better, they're not, but you've got to recognize a lost cause as soon as possible.

Yes, the longevity of implants can vary. Some of the factors involved include gum and bone health. I eat a very healthy diet and do take some supplements. The reason my implant ultimately failed was because I had two molars removed about two years before and it put pressure on the front tooth implant (i also grind my teeth). The titanium implant snapped. I had a new one put in as well as two molar implants and they are doing well.@@TeeTee-zm2re

As a practicing Periodontist who sees failing dental implants almost every day, I fully agree that natural teeth if they can be saved is my preference. Dental implants succumb to the same diseases as teeth, breakdown of hard and soft tissue, negative effects of systemic disease such as diabetes and accelerated loss of support with grinding and clenching.

I agree. I used to live in Dubai and never had issues with the dentist. Every operation was perfect.
I now live in the UK, had one filling which the dentist insisted should be a glass-ionomer, and the filling moved causing a “leak” which led to an infection. I returned to the dentist with a swollen gum and pus 1 week later, she said it was a “high bite” and shaved some of the filling. 2 weeks later the pain went, but a recurring abscess formed.
I then returned after 5 months to find out that it was never a “high bite” but an infection due to a botched filling, and the pain only subsided because my nerve died! Useless! And to have found out that resin, which I wanted, has better adhesive properties and durability and this probably would never have happened!
I went for a second opinion as I needed a root canal, and the botch dentist wanted to do it telling me I have a month until it needs to be extracted.
Turns out, I have about sixth months before that stage, and I have been referred to a specialist because general dentists shouldn’t operate on branched infections if they don’t need to.
Pathetic in this country, there are hardly any regulations keeping these botch jobs in check. A bad filling could end up with failed implants, it’s a terrible thing to have such little care for such an artistic practice!

Interesting video. Sort of gives me a little insight into some reasons for implant failures. I came across an article that talks about how millions of americans are experiencing failed dental implants. it sort of concerns me, because I have had an implant several years ago. my implant seems to be doing great, even though I dont take great care of my teeth. I think a major problem with implants is that people go cheap as possible with materials, and experience of the dentist. My dentist was one of the more expensive and experienced people, who did things like produce surgical guides to ensure absolutely correct angles of placement. He also was extremely careful in drilling into bone graft, by drilling into bone a little, and doing digital x-ray, drill some more, x-ray, multiple times, ensuring he drilled deep enough, but not too deep.(apparently it is possible to get carried away with the drilling, and drill into a nerve, causing long term pain and problems.) It also took almost 1 year of bone graft healing, implant healing, and final placement of crown. It seems very common for inexperienced dentists to jump in and offer implants. They may be cutting corners on material, and procedures.

My dentist wants to do a bone graft first, let that heal for 3-6 months, then put the abutment, let that heal, then put the permanent tooth on. And I prefer this slower process. He’s able to keep an eye on the healing process and fix anything that may go wrong. I’ll also get them checked and cleaned twice a year, as well as taking care of them as I should. It’ll be a process, but I’m excited.

Thank you Doctor for sharing that important information. It was wonderfully explained as well. I’m trying to help my sister. She has terrible bone loss and periodontal disease; pocketing at least 11+ each tooth. She doesn’t smile anymore, it looks really bad. She wants implants but her dentist is trying to scam her, offering a “lifetime warranty” for 80K full mouth. He’s not an oral surgeon but advertised as one. I hope she didn’t already give a down payment of 30K before starting the process. People please be careful.

Hmm... I'm going abroad to get a good service actually. All of the stuff that I had done in the UK over the past 15 years has cracked and resulted in a loss of 5 teeth. Even now I had two crowns fitted in UK in March/April, went to Poland and was told they were not fitted correctly because there's a tiny gap between the tooth and crown (I paid £2400 for them as well!). I'm sure there are plenty of good dentists in UK but I'm lucky to have a great dentist in Poland where crowns are half the price and implants are a 3rd of the price so I'd rather go there.

So now I have one post #11, next is no tooth and next is no tooth. So I went to two dentists, asked if I can have two implants next to each other and where I have a post #11 just put a crown but both of them said its not a food ides to put two implants together, they didnt really explain well so anybody has two front implants next to each other and next to them is a crown?! Interesting info. except: What would the good doctor suggest if we have an absessed tooth that is problematical? Would he recommend simply removing the tooth and leaving it at that? Would he recommend a root canal, which has its own problems? The base situation that he identifies at the beginning of the video (removal of perfectly good teeth and replacement with implants) seems an extremely unusual (and amazingly expensive) proposition that would apply to very few patients.

He didn't seem to address the issue of just pulling the tooth and doing nothing because most people think their whole set of teeth must be perfect. I think what he was saying was that implants are technically better than any other repair, such as root canals and crowns, bridges, dentures etc. Being old, when I had a tooth go bad under crown I considered no other option than to have it pulled and doing nothing else
