I do not believe all foreigners are the same. The problem we've had lately is with ppl coming from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
They came in assaulting our officers and demanding things our poor people do not get so easily. Only the stupid people think all foreigners are the same. Some behave and are good for the economy and others should just be sent back to where they came from. And yeas, it should be like that in the USA, keep the good, refuse the bad. WIN-WIN.

After living in my car for several years due to really bad depression/ anxiety I took my small SS 3 years ago at 62 and high-tailed it to Baja Ca. the Mexican peninsula. A small, comfortable, furnished apt. near the beach and local shops. Wi-Fi, cable, and off street parking the rent was $5500 pesos a month. The rent was raised this past January to $7500. The personal freedom aspect of Mexico is really not to be underestimated. Returning to the USA does feel very stifling after you’ve spent time in Mexico. It’s ironic since the USA calls itself ‘the land of the free’

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 Před 2 lety +24

Very good point. America may wave around its constitution and its right to bear arms, but Americans are far less free in so many regards than people in Mexico. When you get beyond the terrible drug violence in Mexico (driven by the U.S. market for drugs) you see that it's relegated to very specific locals in a very, very, very big country. Mexico is also every bit as regional a country as the U.S., maybe even more so. I was born in raised in Los Angeles where I still live, on the wealthy west side. But I've been to parts of Mexico that I consider just as nice and far more affordable. I probably will move to Mexico. You get far more bang for your buck.

As far as anti-foreigner sentiment I am sensitive to that as well. On my recent trip to Mexico I did experience a lecture from a local about something that was a misunderstanding due to language. I didn't know what he was saying to me and he got out of proportion angry with me. I apologized but it was a bit scary. Overall I found most people to be extremely accommodating when making reasonable requests.
I think the main thing that many Mexicans are becoming sensitive to and what we as visitors and foreigners living there should be aware of is our effect on prices and gentrification in Mexican cities and towns we visit and choose to live in.
My partner and I have been looking at Mexico as a potential future home but we had a discussion about this and we agreed that we would try to only pay the local price for something as a way to keep prices from rising above the average wages made and spent by working class Mexicans.
In other words we support the local economy not the inflated economy. If we rent a house we will not rent a place that is in a transitional neighborhood if the rent asked is more than 20-30% more than what locals pay. Even if we can afford it.
Paying local prices is not just about saving money. It's about not allowing our higher ability to pay cause local prices to rise. When I see builders trying to build and sell condos in small poor Villages for 200k I remind myself that despite being able to afford that that I do not want to do damage to the ability of local people to be able to pay for a home on the wages they earn in Mexico. I want to use my money wisely and be a consumer of great food and great services but not push up those prices just because I can pay more.

Hi Jordan, great video again. As someone who lasted about four and a half years in Mexico and eventually returned to my country, I'd have to say I agree with all of your points, but for me you omitted an enormous negative - which is the lack of ethics there dealing with everyday life. And before people jump all over me, I know it's not all 'wine and roses' in Canada and the United States - but to site a few examples, when I visited an art gallery and bought a painting, they padded out my bill with an extra $400 (yes I caught them). Someone skimmed my credit card for 12 grand in Akumal. At various Pemex gas stations attendants would try to scam money from me. My friendly neighbors stole my bicycles which were locked in the basement of my building, I saw them in their backyard years later. I could go on and on, those are just a few examples. I was also robbed on my second day there by someone climbing in my hotel window. Frankly, for all of the pros, the negative experiences outweighed them. I suspect you may have experienced a few of these things yourself while you lived in the Yucatan. It's too bad too, I really love Mexico but these things happened to me over and over and over again and the relentless scams in the Yucatan were my out-cue. I suppose my point is - where you decide to live full-time in Mexico will really shape your experience there as well.

I think everywhere in the world is going to be people who complain about foreigners but most of the people in Mexico don't have a problem with it because we are used to seeing foreigners living in Mexico and even Mexicans when we travel I think it depends on the way we behave with the native people of the place we will be treated, if we are respectful and considerate we will receive the same treatment and I am not only talking about foreign tourism but one as a Mexican.
Those who have been rude to you Jordan are ignorant in the same way when one as a Mexican is rudely received in other countries at least I, who am Mexican, see them as ignorant people and do not give them a minute of importance.

I qualify for the Visa and plan to get it soon. I’m a little concerned about the nationals not wanting us there. I recently retired and worked with Hispanic nurses here in America. We were having a custom house built and a Hispanic nurse told me that the Hispanic construction workers would sabotage the house and to really check it out before we closed. I thought she was fuc…. around with me. I asked her why they would do that. She reported I was naive and that Mexicans hate Americans. She further reported they come to America to work, send their money back to Mexico and eventually go back to live a very nice life. I didn’t want to believe her. She was right. They cost the builder a fortune to undo their insanity. They covered all of the gutter downspouts with shingles, urinated in all of the AC vents, stuffed rocks in the water pvc pipes, and really did dangerous things on purpose. I felt so sorry for the builder. He had to correct everything. He was so hurt and reported he paid them great wages, never laid them off when the weather was bad, and even paid them full wages when they didn’t work at all during slow times. This was a large builder. He ended up in a class action lawsuit because they sabotaged over 100 homes. He reported he would try to hide cameras to catch the perps but, they would find the cameras and destroy them. Needless to say, this destroyed his life and health. I’m not as trusting of them now. Nothing about that situation was ethical. I really would like to leave the US but, I definitely want to feel welcomed. I will get the visa regardless for emergency reasons.

It's been a long time since you came up on my feed. Didn't know about the situation with Maddie so went back in time to catch up.
Mexico and Guatemala. I traveled by myself, in 1980 - age 24, all throughout the Central American countries. I stayed in both of these countries for quite awhile and I felt I was 'home' - like this is where I belonged. Now that was not at all like me. I was born and raised in Anaheim as a city girl (when Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm were FREE! lol). But I was shocked at how much I didn't want to leave either country and hoped one day to make either one my home. Watching your videos is making me rethink moving.
With what's going on here in the USA (Washington state being my home for over 30 years now) I'm more concerned than ever that we are losing our Freedoms, accepting lawlessness as part of the culture, inappropriate indoctrination sexually and culturally of our youth, freedom of speech, among other things. Ray, the author of the book, was forecasting this years ago. You could see it coming if you were paying attention. Most people weren't.

Thanks for making this video, you make some really good points! I agree with you that the prices + foods are the top reasons to live there. I love street food but even when you splurge and eat at a cool 5star restaurant, it’s still much better value and only the cost of a mediocre restaurant in North America. I travelled to mexico for 3 months and camped lots, my fav places were Playa Del carmen, Tulum, Auga azul, Maruata. Since returning to Tulum+ Playa del Carmen, it’s just too busy for me (I camped both places 20yrs ago). While Oaxaca is quieter, I think it’s too dry, I live on Vancouver Island and love the rain + forest here. Trying to find the perfect long term vacation place + keep considering puerto Viejo Costa Rica bc the climate is perfect and it’s rustic, less polished which I prefer, less touristy but I would miss mexican food!!! Trying to find a good place in mexico that’s similar climate, not so touristy. I loved Puerto Morelos, cute town, less busy, but not much forest. I remember heading South to Belize and but forget what Chetumal area was like. Lake Bacalar was aaaamazing but trying to find somewhere walking distance to the ocean. Have you noticed any areas with rainforest right close to the beach like costa rica that aren’t so developed? Thanks for your advice!

Please note that living and working a very long time in Mexico does have serious side financial consequences. You will probably never get a Mexican pension, and even, if you get it, a full Mexican work carreer gives you around 100usd in monthly state pension.. So all those years you have been living the good life when you were young.. it will come back in your old age as you will basically will have to be auto-sufficient . Offcourse you can get involved in a private pension fund but even that is not going to provide you a 1500-2000usd pension, except if you invest about 1000 up to 1500usd monthly on your private pension fund for about 30 years during your working life. You can instead consider to buy a house, rent it out etc. But you will still be on your own as a pensioner.
Each year working in Mexico knocks of a part of your US/Canadian state pension rights, think about it as well.
At the end, it is the US/Canadions pensioners who do have the best of both worlds when moving to Mexico

Never have been to central Mexico before and are really excited to be coming to what I hope is a great town. I really enjoy your point of view that you outline in your videos. Would enjoy having a lunch with you; no big reason, just to enjoy your company and hear about you. If this works just let me know and we can work something out to connect. Thanks Derek.

Se siente como hogar! Definitely very inspirational video that came at the right time. You definitely summed up my sentiment as well, because I took a similar path 10 years ago. However you left out the part about how Mexicans truly love their Country, God, and their Family. It's the land where on most given nights you will find people dancing in the street. The place of laughter, diversion, family, and sooo much more! You would be hard-pressed to find anything close to that that in the United States.

I think your channel is actually a valuable service to many of us that plan on living in Mexico or maybe are just thinking about it. You're very straightforward about how things are including the good and the bad. Although what's good or bad for you might be different than for some of us. But that's the beauty of showing what it's really like. You don't seem to sugarcoat anything whether you like it or not. The info is there for us to ultimately make up our own minds. As someone who will be moving to Mexico permanently later in 2022, I find the info you give us invaluable.

Good examples of personal freedom. What we are dealing with in the US, is an "oppressive government". It has slowly gotten worse over the past 30 or 40 years. I live in CA so I see the most oppressive of all, its really bad here in CA, I also came from AZ where the government 30 years ago was MUCH less oppressive. I am tempted to move to Mexico as well, I think you made the right move!

Viva Mexico. I really agree with many of your sentiments about Mexico and the US. After 60 years in the US, I no longer see this place as my country. I don’t recognize, want nothing to do the the culture, politics, and mindset of the people. I now have an amazing Mexican wife and have been to Mexico 17 times in the last 2.5 years looking for the city we want to live in. At last count, 14 cities. I’ll be living in Campeche soon. Did not know a word in Spanish. Now, comfortable in light conversational Spanish with excellent grammar and pronunciation (thank you, Spanish by Paul). It’s a wonderful country with much pride, and the good people are very good. The bad, however, are pretty awful… but they can be avoided. Everything about affordability is true. And above that, an extraordinary life if you have the resources. The food is prepared with pride in even the smallest restaurants. Los Angeles fine restaurants are a joke by comparison.

So true about the cocktails. I live in México and recently visited Texas. Went to a restaurant/bar and had a large cocktail (un litro) which I did not finish. Well, I was leaving the restaurant when the hostess at the EXIT stopped me and said I could't take the drink outside the rest. I was like "what the heck? Why not?" 🤔. I was soooo shocked to hear that, because in México you can absolutely take it any where you want. Anyways, I had to leave my drink which was 3/4 full and definately NOT cheap at all. ☹️

I spent 10 months in Zapopan, Jalisco and though I'm back in the USA, the biggest reason I'm spending the next few years getting my life in order so I can immigrate to Mexico permanently is FAMILY. In Mexico (I hear it is like this in a lot of latin american countries), family/community values are a huge, epic part of their culture and I want my future kids to grow up and learn from that. Strong families still exist in the USA but that is more of the exception than the rule these days. Only reason I personally have strong family/community values is because I grew up in a latin american area in Denver, Colorado.
