Roy Harper - One For All - Live Studio Performance 1969 / 1970

  • Part 1 of some old Roy Harper footage that has recently surfaced. Five songs recorded live in studio. All five are in order in this playlist. But... recorded and filmed in which studio? Rumour has it that it's from Norwegian TV 1970. Roy has some vague recollection of the session but can't remember the 'where' or 'when'? We're working on that. Because of the songs being played, and the way some are being played, he thinks this session couldn't have been recorded after 1969.
These notes may develop. Check back for additional info...
'One For All' was released on 'Folkjokeopus' (1969)
Available at the artist's shop on cd, flac and mp3

This is from a Norwegian (NRK) broadcast produced by Svein Erik Børja, August 1969. I know because I booked all of Roy's gigs and TV appearances in Norway during that amazing time period. No wonder Roy can't remember when and where, there was a lot of smoke in the air in those days. Roy is Roi !

I remember when the Stones did Hyde Park on July 5th 1969. The 'New musical express' had photos on the front of the next issue of the acts that played there. Roy had just had a pretty severe haircut - the NME even commented on it in their caption below the photo. He's either got hair that grows incredibly long in a short space of time - or - this is just before the July gig.

Saw him live several times during my student days in Cardiff (1969-1973)...fond memories and still listening, especially good during these current 'hysterical' times..

I saw Roy play this just once. The quality of the performance astounded me at the time and the memory has stayed with me for decades. City Hall, Newcastle. Strawbs supported with Rick Wakeman on keys.

This clip is brilliant a timely reminder of how good a musician Roy is, such a natural feel for the rhythm and texture of music. No wonder in the 70s so many wanted him to play with them excellent!

Mike Denby True but there’s a lot of in-studio video from this era that’s horrible quality. This recording is extraordinary in quality and as a historical document of Roy’s early days.

Hello Mr Harper, I met you once briefly at the Hull Trucking Theatre in 1985 if I remember, you had lit up in the intermission in your dressing room, I poked my head in and said hello. You played an amazing set with many of the audience sat cross legged at your feet.....Your music moves me in a way nothing else can. My friends and I have spent many an afternoon on a river bank in Brigg Lincs as kids listening to you accompanied by some good lebanese. Keep on doing what you do.

It could very well be that this is a recording from NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting System). Roy held a concert i Oslo Univeristy Aula on Friday January 23. 1970, and Norwegian TV did some recording on the occasion. Also participating at the concert were Lillebjørn Nilsen and Finn Kalvik. Both are still perfoming and alive and well! By tghe way, Roy also perfomed way up north in Norway during the same period.
