  • This is my new guitar tutorial for One For All, Roy Harper's almost-fully-instrumental track from Folkjokeopus. This time I indulged a bit with the cover and added more to the second part. Just excuse the few bum notes.
After watching Roy's performance on Norwegian TV available on CZcams, I believe I've nailed the fingerpicking part quite close to the original. And this first part of the song is, IMO, the most interesting. As a fingerpicking guitar instrumental, it's up there with Me And My Woman's guitar interlude, Forever or Forget Me Not - other personal favorites that come to mind. The very first seconds are the most challenging. The rest is not so hard. I probably overdid it bit, though...
The second part is mostly a guitar jam improvisation and I never bothered to learn it note by note. However, through the years, it was inevitable that I ended up learning a few licks. But what's most important is to understand the technique that Roy uses, something that we can also hear on the intro to McGoohan's Blues from the same album. Once you get that, you can spend hours fooling around with this.
    DADGAD tuning, (capo 2nd fret).

    Brilliant . . . .

I'd like to add... about 14 minutes in, there's a chord played with only 1st and 2nd fingers on 2nd and 3rd strings with the 1st string open. To my ears - Roy lingers on that chord, fingerpicking for a full 4 beats with emphasis in the 2nd string. That's how I play it. Also, to get to this tuning, I also tune up the 3rd 4th and 5th strings by two frets - because I find the 6th string too slack in DADGAD (and it removes the need for a capo). Love your lessons, I've learnt SO much from you, which has given me endless hours of satisfaction and joy. Delighted to see you uploaded 1948ish.👏

Sorry... "about 14 minutes in"? The original is about 8 minutes long. There must be some confusion :)
You can also change to heavier strings, because Roy used a capo.
I am glad you enjoyed 1948ish. It took me years to decide the best way to play it.

Let me clear up the confusion. 14 minutes into your lesson - 28 seconds and then 44 seconds into the tune. I think lingering on this chord brings a sense of closure to these two parts of the tune. I'm not surprised you like the fingerpicking part of this tune better. I've never heard anything else like it - something sombre, yet haunting that can be played with occasional "attack".

@@stu7399 Ok, I get it. But I think I stayed on the chord for the correct number of bars. Not that it matters that much, you can stay longer, as you say, for suspense, and then attack the bass (I get the idea). As for the fingerpicking , mine is far from note perfect :)

Brilliant cover man , and thanks for the tutorial! Once you get that fingerpicking part down, it is a great feeling to play ! I find myself playing this whenever I'm in dadgad tuning! Thanks for these tutorials, I wouldn't have a clue on some of these songs other than the tunings thanks to these videos! Oh and that guitar is sounding very very nice !

Thanks mate. The same with me, I find myself playing the fingerpicking part quite often. I find it very relaxing, except for those legatos at the beginning :)

Thanks Stuart. I can play the first part by heart. The rest I guess I've stored a few licks in the back of my head along the years, after listening to it 1000 times :)

I was listening to the album today and hadn't heard this in quite awhile. I wondered if you had had a go at it and of course you had and not only that an excellent take on it. Thanks again for doing a tutorial as well as a great performance. I shall be having a go at it this weekend (as well as resurrecting "Blackpool" which I haven't done in awhile). On that album I was hearing quite a lot of 12 string guitar, am I right?

Thanks Graeme. Great to hear from you. I hope you are well. The fingerpicking part is a personal favourite.
As for 12-strings I believe Roy didn’t use them until Stormcock, and then quite a bit on Lifemask. After that I am not sure he used them anymore.

My tinnitus is playing tricks on me then! Bloody Ac/DC and Ritchie Blackmore Rainbow! We are all doing great, I hope to see you playing a set in Portugal when we can get over to your neck of the woods. All the best and stay safe to you and yours man.

Hi, I'm struggling getting started with this one. Not getting anywhere. I know you don't normally do tabs but any chance you could give us a few more pointers regarding the picking patterns? Thanks

I am sorry but I can't help you any more than this. You know CZcams allows you to play the video at a slower speed, maybe that will help. Anyways, keep trying. It took me a long time to finally nail this intro and you will eventually make it too.

Cheers mate. This one is turning into a bit of a project for me. I shall take your advice and keep at it.
