EVERYTHING WENT WRONG At My FIRST EVER RACE WEEKEND

  • This was the most trying weekend of my racing career. I take you through my first ever car race weekend, from testing, to the final race. I'm analysing and narrating my thoughts as I navigate the Silverstone GP circuit and the transition from karts, to cars.
    The 25th and 26th March 2023 saw my first foray into the world of Classic Touring Car Racing. I was pleased to do it with the ‪@britishautomobileracingclub‬ in the ‪@ClassicTouringCarRacingClub‬ . It was an amazing event and, as you will see, the community spirit among competitors is second to no other form of motorsport. If it wasn't for ‪@Jamesibbotson875‬, my weekend would've ended before Race 1.
    In the video, I take you through how I utilised each session to learn the car, the conditions, and the other drivers around me. I analyse my attacking and defensive driving as I overtake and fend off my higher class competitors.
    As this is the first race of the season, it is a new style of video from me. Please let me know what you enjoyed, what you didn't and any feedback so that we can grow this channel together!

    Superb stuff Will, watching your vids out of order as discovered your brands ‘win’ first🙌🏼
    If I had one wee criticism it’s the constant music 🙉
    Prefer to hear more of what’s really going on with you and the engine etc
    But really enjoying watching your racing journey and other than that they are really well produced👍🏼👍🏼

    Great job Will, great video and great editing! Thank you very much for the view of the pedalbox! It's a pity that this view is not more integrated in the video. I hope you will continue to make this kind of videos on track and that you will continue to include more on your footwork. ;)

      @@WillEgby Thank you very much Will, it's great! As a suggestion, keep the editing with full screen views (not with simultaneous screens in the screen). ;)

    For the last part of your vid; Toyota radiator clamps comes to mind as a future fix. They act as springs and keeps things sealed with the heat cycles.
    Thanks for your detailed videos, looking forward to new ones :-)

      Thanks. Good suggestion. I'm looking into redoing the system so I'm making sure that no connections have any strain and fresh clips all round!

    Interesting video Will. That main selector failure is very rare, but the clutch arm fracture isn't. I think the arm went first, causing the shaft fracture with the increased effort of changing gear. It's worth beefing up the new arm with welded plates to make boxes. When you replace the main selector, don't forget to copy the modifications to the detent grooves on the broken shaft (a diamond burr will do it) otherwise the detent ball won't drop fully into the grooves due to the sliding dog travel on a JK box being less than a standard Imp. Stay with the Redline Lightweight Shock oil too - it's very good for JK boxes. Did you buy/drive the car home from Guildford?
    Good luck with your racing.

    • @WillEgby
      @WillEgby  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment and advice. Yes that makes sense. I'm actually changing the whole system to a race clutch and flywheel so a new strengthened fork and thrust bearing are going in. I've got James on the case who is modifying everything to work and much stronger too. Yes, that oil has been recommended lots so good to know it has another vote as its not cheap! Yes, the first time I drove the car was back from Guildford on the road. A real experience. I trailer it everywhere now! loved the video man I've found with my race motor the stock gearbox can't really hang in there I'm looking for 5 speed hewland I've got a 6 speed but the ratio was a way too high so you'd be do 120km in 1 so I'm just going to sell that for a decent amount of money (cos there pretty rare) and buy a 5 speed

    • @WillEgby
      @WillEgby  Před rokem

      Yeah. Ratios make a huge difference especially in a race engine when the window of power is much smaller. Almost feels like you're slowing down when you accelerate off cam haha.

    I interested why you went to classic touring cars, and not classic formula ford 1600, given you did karts.

    It has always been said that you have to own an Imp for say ,six months of use to iron out the gremlins (throttle cable ),and this is so for you it seems..The jubilee clip is just pure bad luck though..Massive help from James there all the same.
    Thankfully it is road registered as well so that will help immensely in making the Imp reliable .
    Is the broken transaxle a straight cut. close ratio LSD type or standard spec? If the latter then you will need i expect a replacement every event.
    Your commentary is super ,and i am making mental notes of your tactics and technique should i be fortunate for once since the new century ,finance wise to join you on the grid.

    • @WillEgby
      @WillEgby  Před rokem

      Thanks. Yes it's all part of the process. The gearbox is a straight cut dog box. I think it may be the same selector shaft as the original box but not sure. Hope to see you on the grid in future!

    • @WillEgby
      @WillEgby  Před rokem +1

      The ratio between 2 and 3 is much smaller in the race box. That's the main reason why we don't use the synchro mesh standard box as can't get the ratios. The Imp only comes on cam at about 6 to 6.5k rpm and the standard box when revved to 9k in 2nd goes down to about 5.5k in 3rd so makes it tricky.

    3:03 “only one on wets” - wtf? Tyres for the pre-66 series are Dunlop CR65 as per the series regulations, so what were you running..?

    • @WillEgby
      @WillEgby  Před rokem +1

      Tyres are anything from MSUK List 1A and also Dunlop CR65 .204 compound. Although you are correct that CR65s are the most common choice but not technically part of list 1A. You are allowed to run any tyres from those lists and I was using my chosen option for wet weather. Hope that clears it up.

    Hi Will. You have a nice historic racing Imp but your gear ratios are terrible, is the gearbox std?. You won't ever make results with that gearbox except on indy-track - joke. If you have 4 speed box don,t try get higher max speed than 160-170 km/h @ 8500-9000rpm. Then 1 st gear as long as possible. I used to have overal ratio 13,5-12,8. With this it won't jump from the grid but gives much better overall results. Have a great season! Seppo (Finland)
