- In this video, I will go through the process required to install Big Sur on Apple devices that no longer support it. We will start by creating the USB drive to perform the installation, followed by an actual installation on an unsupported model (Late 2012 iMac (iMac 13,1)). The same can be used for Macbooks or Mac Pro as well.
Newer version of macOS: Sonoma
In the meanwhile, macOS Sonoma has been released. A very similar method is available to install the latest version of macOS on unsupported hardware. I did a separate video that covers that version of macOS,. You can find that one over here: • Install macOS Sonoma o...
MicropatcherAutomator: github.com/moo...
You can also find the info shared in this video explained in detail on my blog. Link for this video: jensd.be/1376/...
In case you're interested in installing macOS Monterey on unsupported hardware, you can find a video on that over here: • Install macOS Monterey...
This works on my 2012 MBP, Thank You. Big Sur uses the updated windows bootcamp too. I just installed win10 with no BSOD errors and the volume works now.
You saved my system life , it’s working 2011 mid mac
Does your WiFi and model description look correct and work as well? Just wondering because I have a mid 2011 iMac and wanted to know before I installed.
Does it work well?
Does it work well?
Late to the party it seems. I bought a 2012 Mac Mini i7/16G/256G SSD off eBay for $150 with Catalina for just my at home computer (have a 2022 MacBook Pro for work). Paired with a 2011 Apple Thunderbolt Cinema Display (2560x1440), Apple Magic Keyboard, Apple Magic Mouse. This video was spot on, got Big Sur working and love it. Siri, iMessage, live weather and all my apps work. Well done!!!!
Hi Jensd,
Just wanted to let you know after a lot of tries, making a new boot disc on another usb stick I finally succeeded to install everything. It runs very smoothly.
Thanks a lot for your nice and very well explained video.
Good to hear it finally worked. Nit sure why but some Macs seem pretty picky on which USB drives they want to boot from.
Today, I installed Big Sur on a 2009 macbook. Still I can't believe :) It has a SSD with 2GB of ram. I will add more ram and I think it can handle daily stuff. Thank you for your effort.
Loves from Turkey ❤️ I tried two different methods and the result was just a waste of time. The method you gave was the simplest and the best ❤️ It just didn't allow the last patch you did but I don't have a connection problem. My Late 2013 iMac was 10.15.7 Catalina, now 11.6.2 Big Sur 🤗🎈 And now ☺️ I want to try Monterey with you.
same for me, post install did not work. Anyway, everything works normally on Imac late 2013,i have 11.6.7 Big Sur
It gives me that forbidden 🚫 after doing the EFI Boot and then proceeding to the install macOS Big Sur?
Any reason?!
Followed all of your instructions. Installed MacOS Big Sur over my Catalina on Macbook Pro 2012 without any problem from the first try. I also used the Post-Install patch to initiate my Wi-Fi. 9:08 It works! Thank you for your help.
Glad to hear this helped :)
I have a MacBook pro 2012 and it's sticking on " less than a minute remaining" been on this screen for almost 30 minutes
@@hitmanrandy Try to shut it down. And start again.
is your graphics acceleration enabled
Tried opencore with montrey on my mid2012 macbook pro, but got into a boot loop. Tried this and got Big sur working. many thanks, instructions are on point.
This worked for my 2012 MacBook Pro (Retina) 16gb RAM / 768GB ssd 2.7ghz quad-core i7 😊
Thank you !
What would be the password you use? I’m installing this on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro
Great video very well explained made it sound very easy to run this piece of software thank you for all your hard work putting this video together!
Very simple and to the point …. way to go!,!!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a problem where before every restart I need to run the EFI Boot off the USB, shutdown and wait 10 second, start back up before the OS can load. Running Big Sur on Mac Pro 5,1. anyone else experience this?
Hi there I did the installation and patch but wifi still not working, not sure why 🙃
There is no Post-install automator after installation! Can I install it from somewhere after the installation of the big Sur??? I need big Sur patched.
It installs very well but later on patching process fails
Thanks for this amazing tutorial. I follow steps by steps and installed.
Can’t do the last step. It says the patching failed
Amaizing!!! 🤩 after a few days and many tutorials, it finally works with your instructions. Thank you so much for that!!!
Hi, I got this error: Instalation cannot proceed because the installer is damage. Macbook pro Mid 2012.
Thank you very much.. Your video worked with my MBPro the first time. Thanks again.
Good to hear. Thanks for the nice feedback :)
Its fully work my MacBook Air is 2011 mid 128gb ssd
It's working on iMac Late 2013! Thank you so much! 🤩🤩🤩
Hey so I'm just wondering did ur say less then a minute remaining and just got stuck there I did this before on my iMac late 2013 and waited for almost 3 hours and didn't reboot in Big Sur.
Of all the different methods to install Big Sur, this is the only one that worked, at least for me! Thank you so much!!! I finally feel free from "High Sierra's tyranny"! On the other hand, even when you have a very good and clear pronunciation, I still can hear you have a slight Eastern (Hindu, perhaps?) accent when speaking English. May I know where you are from? I am really, really, really interested in knowing people from Eastern countries and cultures. Do you know why? I want to 'enhance' my viewpoints and make my education grow up.
hey, im having a problem. I don't have the options for post-install Automator. What should I do
You don’t need patches that’s what it meanw
Thanks for the information. This is on a Macbook,7 (mid 2010), All went well until last restart when it keeps restarting with the message "Your computer restarted because of..." and it goes on, an on... Any ideas?
Working on MBP late 2011, but very slow.
Thanks it worked with my Imac from mac OS Catalina to Big Sur
Do some of you guys get high utilization on the service "windowserver" and how did you solve this problem?
The patch has failed 3 times. What am I missing?
Thank you for this great video, however, Can you please tell me why I don't see the post-install automate icon (6:31)?
Mine, Im getting an error when I run the installation and wont get the success message. Macbook air A1466 here
After i restarted my mac i clicked EFI BOOT, then Download macOS Big Sur and it shows me a forbidden logo
Did your Mac turn off immediately after starting EFI boot?
Great Tutorial, just got mine done very smoothly.. Thanks.
Hello. I have a 2013 iMac 27 inch. I am following your instructions to install Big Sur but also see options on the installed for Sonoma, Monterey, etc. Which do you recommend I install? I am trying to retain Google Drive functionality which disappears on 6 June with Catalina.
I installed big sur using your method but it doesn’t have the post-install Automator. What should I do? Ima stuck with no Wi-Fi.
@Devansh Pandey the same thing here!! Please help!
Thank you for a fantastic tutorial I installed it on my Mac Pro 2012 it works great although I am having issues booting sometimes it can't find the hardrive I do a SMC reset and it works after that any suggestions on how to fix? Thank you again for a great tutorial!
the graphics info isnt visible in About my mac section why ??
Hi - i tried a few more solutions that failed - but your approached was successful for me. NB: I have a Mac mini 2012 with Catalina; and did create a BigSur Volume beforehand and installed bigSur on that volume with micropatcher Automator. Thank you for your video!
On a Mac mini 2012, you can even go all the way to Ventura. I did a video on exactly that recently:
Upgrading a Mac Mini 2012 with SSD and install Ventura: czcams.com/video/O8nERV-dHik/video.html
Performance on the same: czcams.com/video/ZI7pjHKyuJY/video.html
Hi i am doing that right now i am just installing the installer with opencore . its not like im using opencore just need to install the installer
Awesome tutorial!!! thank you!!! One quick question: after the installation, may I do all the updates with no issues??? That part me scares me a lot!!! My computer is a Late 2012 Mac Mini with 2.5 GHz, dual Core i5, 16 GB of Ram and a 480 SSD drive... THANK YOU AGAIN!
help, for some reason the yellow usb drive isn't there on the boot options, and I don't know how to fix it, I also have BootCamp installed but I don't think that's the reason.
Bonsoir,
J'ai un imac 2011 High Sierra . Est-il possible d'installer Big Sur?
Cela ne devrait pas être un problème.
Bonjour
I have a mid 2010 13" White MacBook Unibody, and tried to install Big Sur following step by step off of your video and was unsuccessful after several tries. I got as far as 13 minutes remaining on the reboot and install and all I get was a Grey circle with a line thru it. Then had problems getting Catalina back on it. Just a Heads Up.
after install on Mac Pro 2009 is just keep on shutting down during boot loader startup, what could be the problem
Big Sur loaded.i was sapoused to go to final stage .
Joss shutdown and restart nice
using kmrutil rebuilf system
Doesn't work for me I follow all steps with a 64gb USB stick and it stops when trying to download installer app every time!
Do I need to backup my Mac before advancing with the process?
In theory you can upgrade using this method and keep your applications and files. But it's always a good idea to have a proper backup. Especially when you are doing something like this.
Hello, what could be the reason that my mouse and keyboard no longer work in the boot menu? I'm getting desperate with this MacPro 3.1. It must be possible to install BigSur.
I have the same issue
Thank you thank you thank you! It works! Yes You are blessed 😇
This worked perfectly. Thank you so much. Kudos
my post past is failing
I think its because is skipped the step where I had to wipe the drive in the final step.
could that be the problem ?
how do I get the post past to bye successful?
Not see EFI Boot in my iMac 27 2011 Mac 12,2
Hi,
I don't want a fresh install on my mac pro 5.1. Just install it over my 10.15.7 Catalina. Would be no problem or?
You shoyld be able to run the ctrated installer from within your cirrently installed macOS to upgrade. In any case good to havr a backup, especially doing things like this :)
@@jensdbe Thanks a lot for your quick reply.
@@jensdbe Hi,
I did exactly follow the rules and the first time in the boot menu I get two efi boot choices next to each other, tried them both and with one of them my mac shuts off and then I restart while holding down the alt key and I select MacOs big sur install but then every time I come back and get a message because of a problem mac restarted press any key. It then gets back to normal starting up Catalina. NO matter how many times I have tried. My mac is a mac pro 5.1 from 2009-2010 with a metal graphics card.
Please help. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I am not getting the EFI Boot option icon at all, only the “Install macOS Big Sur” icon is visible but it doesn't have the hedgehog icon either. When i select it it displays the Not Allowed icon (crossed circle).
I am using the Micropatcher automator 2.0 and downloading a fresh copy of big sur via the app.
My Mac Pro is 5,1 from 2010, firmware 144
Latest Mojave works fine.
I have tried on the original ATI HD5770 1GBwith boot menu but no Metal 2. Also I have RX265 with support for Metal 2 but no boot menu so I couldn't see anything.
Is the graphics card the reason?
The micropatcher itself seems to have completed exactly as per the guide above.
What am I doing wrong?
Not sure if this will help but have you tried another USB drive? I noticed that some of them cause issues to boot from (in my experience Sandisk). Also see my video about the journey for my Mac Pro 4,1. There might have been a step in between which you need.
Works like a charm! Thanks dude.
In order for the update to work do I have to erase everything from my Hard Drive?
Hello there I need your help I Install macOS Big Sur On MacBook Pro 2011
face time camera not working any suggestion please
i trying to install into macbook white mid 2009, after i choose efi boot then choose install macos big sur then apple logo loading appear, but when it still loading then the apple logo change into prohibited icon. any solutions please?
How do I eject the usb drive after updating. When I click “ eject install macOS Big Sur “ it says it be ejected because one or more programs may be using it
Not really a big issue. If you are sure that the process finiahed, just reboot the machine
Really u r number 1 thanks for this video 😍
I tried to install it on my iMac 2011 27" unfortunately keeps coming up with error '' An error occurred loading the update'' Any idea Please help. Thanks
When I download, a error pop up , The requested URL was not found on this server. What should I Do? Help
Hi there, just a question everything seems to have installed just fine except when I go to the post install Automator part it isn’t present on it the utility menu, as it should be. Also Big Sur seems to perform quite slowl, would there be a reason for this?
does it work on a Late 2010 MacBook Air with High Sierrs? I love Big Sur with open core legacy patcher but it doesn't have auto boot instead of me having to manually select the disks. so does it work?
This appears to me.."The requested URL was not found on this server"(iMac late 2013) after clicking folder"download installer App"and the installation does not start.. :(
Have a look at this newer method to install a newer macOS version on unsupported hardware: czcams.com/video/acpQuCIy3GA/video.html This can be used for the latest version: Sonoma but also for older versions.
Thanks

Hello, after 3:30 i can not go any further.. it says '' The requested URL was not found in this server'' How can i solve this ? Thanks
hi jensd, may i know if all the files inside my macbook pro will still be there after the upgrade?
Can I do it on Mac mini 2011?
Should work fine, yes
@@jensdbe Ok thanks!
Well it doesnt work now... "Automator has encountered an error, the requested URL was not found on this server"
I didn’t the efi boot then I do the Big Sur download and it starts the Apple logo then after a few minutes the no symbol pops up can someone help me
Hey guys ! When i'm at the installer app step, just after inputing my password, the automater doesn't respond anymore. I don't understand why because I have enough space on my usb drive. Did you have this problem ? Could someone help me ?
I have a question- at what point can I take out the hard drive? Or does it always stay in my computer
Do you mean the USB drive? As soon as you get to the setup menu where you can add a user etc, it can be removed.
Thank you. You are the best.
After I hit install big sur the screen has a mouse and keyboard icons I’m on a Mac mini
Preparing the hard Disk, will it erase all the information of my computer, I skiped that step downloaded Big Sur and is now frozen, I dont if it is still processing or what?
i do everthing u say but when i want to boot the usb is show me a prohibition symbol i have a 5.2 version o macbook 2009 and am already have a catalina
Have a look at czcams.com/video/zlDQBYlYACk/video.html
First run the EFI boot entry, after that you should not get the prohibition symbol any more.
Doesn’t work still forbidden sign even if first I go to the usb drive
Great video, simple but so clear. Just one question, can i use bootcamp to set dual boot with windows 10 after installing big sur with this patch?
Haven't tried through bootcamp but using the method without bootcamp (czcams.com/video/f5ZJFxPJPJA/video.html) works fine. Bootcamp does in essence more or less the same so my guess would be that it just works.
@@jensdbe i have watched the video, you have installed windows 10 on IMac 2013, but i 'll install windows 10 on IMac mid 2011, i hope it will run smooth as you have it :)
Thanks you
I don’t get the scheme option to enter GUID so when I create my bootable installer it is labelled EFI and doesn’t force a shut down. So everything stops. Thoughts?
You probably did Erase in Disk Utility on the partition/volume and not on the whole drive. Make sure you have the show all devices option selected first (see video) and then select the top item (representing the drive hardware) when doing Erase. That should show the Scheme option and should fix the issue as well.
Doesn’t work on Mac mini 2010 - stops at install due to usb drivers not been part of the patcher. Do you have a work around?
You could give it a try using a different method. Did a video on how to get Monterey on unsupported hardware some time back, using Opencore. You can find it here: czcams.com/video/gF89n4TKurs/video.html
any patch or fix for the camera? facetime is not working...
Thank you for video! Just installed Big Sur on late 2013 iMac, everything works fine and runs smoothly, except issue with external display, iMac can't find or recognise external monitor (thunderbolt to hdmi connection). Is there solution to fix it!
after several attempts I finally got it installed. Only problem now is that all my USB and firewire ports die once I connect or disconnect anything on them. Eg. connecting or disconnecting an external drive. My keyboard and mouse dies and I have to manually reboot it by holding the power button. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks.
Mac Pro early 2009 flashed 5,1
Haven't seen this issue before. Did you run the post installation patches?
Post install doest apear to me.
Hey Bro
I have imac mid 2011 i7 16go ram 128ssd i did install mac os big sur but the problem is the graphics is slow even after i did automatic patcher any solution !?
Thank you so much bro....
Why i am anable to boot from the usb drive ?
After my 2012 MacBook Pro installed Big Sur it never gave me the welcome window. Instead if gave me a black screen which now does nothing. I can’t even get it to turn on anymore.
Make sure you follow the instructions in this video. Reinstall again. Or get back to Catalina.
This works on iMac mid 2011, just one issue with Graphic Acceleration, my iMac use Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6750M, how to fix it?
Did you run the post install patches? That should fix this kind of issue.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! Just wondering if it's possible to install a PCI-e NVME drive after upgrading to Big Sur on the 4,1/5,1 Mac Pro? I know from other videos that it's possible in Mojave but you need to run a new firmware patch to activate NVME support. Have you tried this? Any help appreciated, thanks!
Yes this is possible. I did this before on another build I made (dual CPU). I used the Aqua Computer kryoM.2 evo with a Samsung SSD and the performance was really good.
Hi, if we had to do with the terminal the deactivation of the discrete graphic card(very common issue in the batch o 2011), will doing this cause the loss that configuration?(this loss would cause the failure to be back as discrete card would be active again). thanks in advance
If you do a fresh install (like in the video), the setting would most likely be gone. Not sure for an upgrade. I don't have such model to test it on, sorry.
I’ve got an issue. I’m all good on everything with the installer. I’m installing onto a external NVME. The install goes through both phases of the install, OS Recover Utility install and then 30 minute install with the gray screen and the Apple logo and it seems to hang around the “a few seconds left” or whatever. But it restarts eventually and hangs about halfway through the boot screen bar.
1. I am using an external usb to install that was made from your tutorial on a another device, a 2020 Mac Mini M1 with Big Sur.
2. NVME 980 Samsung internal pcie or external. Works the same.
3. I have a Metal Enabled Radeon Pro wx7100 and a older ATI 256mb to see the boot selector.
4. PCIE raid card with 4 nvme drives.
5. I’ve got or had a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt card installed but removed it.
6. The machine is a 2012 12-core machine with DOSDude Catalina installed.
Are any of the PCIE cards causing issues?
I do have an RX580 I can swap out to use.
Do I need the old ATI card or should is just use the metal card?
A lot of thing that are at play here... Difficult to tell what exactly could be the issue.
I would start with a minimum config, as original as possible. Even the video card does not need to be Metal-supported for the patched installer, it will jsut be slow once installed. I guess it will come down to testing with different configurations.
Im doing this right now on my 2009 IMac and the process is going great! Im wondering if you can go back to the previous version your mac was on (For example macos x el capitain could i go back to it with all my data on it?)
Not sure about that, haven't tried that. Would be interesting to see.
@@jensdbe I reached a problem it says that my format is wrong and restart the app but the format is correct.
I am stuck on migration Assistant window. Two option available as showing in video. which one need to select?
You can choose the "Not now" option in the left bottom corner in order to skip through.
for me it worked, after two days of torment with opencore legacy and patched sur, this micropatcher worked on Imac 21.5 late 2013 / i5 2.9ghz nvidia gt 750 1gb. Thanks for everything! can I update normally in Big Sur after this installation? or only with micro patcher?...not update for Monterey, just Big Sur..🙏 PS:post install did not work.(error) Anyway, everything works normally on Imac
I had only one update to do for safari. I updated normally from system preferences for Safari v 15.5. It worked without problems
Mine not moving on when my password is entered why ?
Great work 100% thanks
