  • Do you want to install macOS Big Sur on your 2012 or 2013 Mac? I will show you the easiest way to do it! This video is a step-by-step tutorial on how to use Patched Sur a macOS Big Sur patcher to create a USB Patched Installer and use it to upgrade macOS Catalina to Big Sur.

    DISCLAIMER: Please understand that installing macOS Big Sur on your unsupported Mac is a best effort by the community. A ton of work went into getting the patcher to work! Some things might not work exactly right but it's really really close. I would not recommend installing on a system that you count on for work or school. ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR FILES FIRST BEFORE YOU UPGRADE! Also note that certain features like sealed OS Snapshots are disabled. This is the only way to make the patcher work right now. The good news is that you are getting the latest security fixes from Apple. Some might argue that upgrading to Patched Big Sur makes your Mac safer since Apple is no longer fixing security issues on macOS High Sierra and below. Thank you!

    When I first looked at upgrading my system to Big Sur, I was hesitant since there was a ton of very techie stuff. I was using this 2012 Mac Mini as my work computer while working from home, and so did not want to do it at all. I recently retired and took another look. Your tutorial and recommendation was super easy to follow. Success! Thanks for the time you took to make this. Big Sur is now running like a champ! B-)

    The installation was successful on my 2012 MacBook Pro! I give kudos for this guide's creation. My appreciation also goes out to the people working on the patchers. Their efforts can save me some money by not having to obtain new hardware for a while. I just have to remember to select the volume of my partitioned hard drive that corresponds to Catalina while starting my computer in order to use Big Sur. Thanks! 🙏

    I’ve always liked you, now I like you even more, haha. Someone on the Unsupported Macs discord said there was an in-depth tutorial on my patcher, and he was right, great job.
    Just to clarify some things:
    - The icon on the EFI boot kind of represents the prohibited symbol for a reason, you are supposed to boot into that one first, then Install macOS Big Sur. I choose the color red, because I thought it was a good color.
    - Your USB ports worked to begin with, that’s the USB 1.0 Macs that need that patch. WiFi was the only thing that needed a fix on your computer.
    - Late 2013 iMacs don’t need the kexts patches at all.
    - That last hiccup with the Plug In USB Installer and Try Again is a known bug so that will be fixed sometime in the future (probably around the time I rename the usb drive to Install Patched Sur)
    If anyone has any question, feel free to ask!

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  Před 3 lety +14

      Ben, thank you very much. You did a great job with this patcher!! I appreciate that you helped clarify these points. I will attempt adding text to the video with this new information! Quick question on the red EFI Boot, after clicking on that what should happen? For some reason, I remember it just booting to a black screen. Then I restarted and the green one worked like I mentioned in the video. Again, thank you for your work on this, I think how you made it more user friendly will really open the door to more people using the patcher.

    • @Ben216k
      @Ben216k Před 3 lety +4

      @@Mr.Macintosh No problem, thanks for making the video, you have a huge audience so this will help a lot of people learn about this amazing trick!
      The EFI Boot disables the macOS compatibility check so that Big Sur and the installer will boot without the prohibited sign and it also disables SIP so that the kexts can be patched. The icon was supposed to represent the prohibited symbol so it would signify getting rid of it. Since the tool only does two things, your Mac will instantly turn off because it's not a full OS, just two actions.

    Let me say, I can’t thank you enough for this video. And Ben Sova, thank you for this labor of love. This video helped me get Big Sur installed without **one** hitch. I’m blown away. I’ve had more hiccups installing previous versions of macOS on my Mac than I did with this patch. I have a mid 2012 MBP and the things is such a beast. I put an SSD and 16gig of RAM in it. I run my design business on it and it’s not let me down. I think Apple hardware-which I’ve been running since last ’90s-is underrated on longevity. I have a machine here which could likely run another 2-3 years. It’s plenty quick enough for 90% of my tasks.

If I understand your answer to another question, I would have to do this whole update process again when Apple updates Big Sur - is that right? Hey Adnan, That's something that is unknown at this point. Same thing happened on my 2011 MBPro. What you can do as a workaround is install high sierra on a separate partition, boot into it and then adjust the brightness. I know its a crazy work around but it works for now until the devs figure out a fix.

    I had "big-sur-micropatcher" was already downloaded and saved to a USB drive, so:
    1- open a terminal windows
    2- dragged patch-kexts.sh from the root of the installation USB drive into the terminal window

Switching between open applications seems to be working fine and responsive as long as the applications were not minimized, it is just the minimize and restore. I have tried disabling the animation and Reducing the the transparency, but it did not help

    Harry here. Worked for me on a late 2012 mac mini with SSD and 16gb of RAM. But I had to restart several times after building the USB flash drive installer before I could get the installation to start. Then after I finally got it to start I got the dreaded crossed out circle indicating something had gone wrong during the installation, at the first stage, apparently before any changes had been written to the system drive. I restarted the installation once more and it seemed to kick in for good this time. It was a very slow process with many, many reboots and no apparent progress could be discerned looking at the progress bar. After thirty minutes I went to bed, skeptical that it would succeed. When I woke up in the morning the installation was complete and I installed the kexts according to the instructions. Thanks.

    Thank you for the information!
    I just completed installing Big Sur on my late 2013 21.5 iMac. But….. it wasn’t as cut and dry.
    A few add-on’s-
    If you’re using a usb thumb drive, blank or not make sure you format it with the machine you’re installing it on. It must be named “untitled” and using journaled. That was the only way I could get the app to format and compile everything onto it.
    It kept failing this process because it was named and formatted on another Mac. Don’t ask me why but it was the only way it worked and didn’t fail the “unmount & mount stage”
    When you’re ready to install after power cycle and option key, I had to do the “efi” boot drive first, then reboot. It would fail if I tried patcher install first.
    After this step it hung at 12 minutes twice and wouldn’t complete using the patcher install. Another Big Sur boot drive was available too.
    I had to click that one to get it to finish.
    Over all it wasn’t to bad. Much easier than using terminal!
    It didn’t index my TV app media correctly. I have it stored on an external USB hard drive.
    I think I’m gonna have to re download all of my movies and tv shows because it won’t index the selected drive correctly.
    Not sure why. But it isn’t a big deal. Probably take a day to do that.
    All in all this tutorial does work but it is a bit glitchy. Don’t give up. This will work if you’re a bit tech savvy.
