    DISCLAIMER: Please understand that installing macOS Ventura on your unsupported Mac is a best effort by the community. A ton of work went into getting the patcher to work! Some things might not work exactly right but it's really really close. I would not recommend installing on a system that you rely on for work or school. ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR FILES FIRST BEFORE YOU UPGRADE! The good news is that you are getting the latest security fixes from Apple. Some might argue that upgrading to Patched Ventura makes your Mac safer since Apple is no longer fixing security issues on 10.15 and below.

    This tutorial is so amazing! I've just installed Ventura on my 2011 iMac. I'm amazed that there is still life left in this old machine after so many years. Back in about 2016 it killed the graphics card and I took it to the Apple shop for help. They were not interested and told me to dump it and buy a new one. They said it would cost around GBP700 to replace the graphics card. So I gave up on the machine, but I did not throw it away. It remained in my garage in its box for the next 3 years. Then about three years ago I decided to take matters into my own hands and fix it myself. I bought a used graphics card from eBay and it worked for about six months and then died again. So I then bought a new graphics card from China for around $200 and that card has been working for about two years now. Then I faced Apple's obsoletion of the machine. I tried a hack to upgrade it to Big Sur a few years back but it kept on crashing, so I went back to High Siera. Until today when I decided to do more research about upgrading and then I found this video! Thank you!!

    Previously used opencore to upgrade mid-2014 MacBook Pro to Mojave. Decided to try Ventura with the GUI version of OpenCore (0.6.8) using your video as a guide. Very concise instruction with helpful tips, no useless info. It took several tries to get an EFI that would boot, I don’t know what the problem was. Once that happened, Ventura installed but I had to run the root patcher to get the graphics and mouse working right. The unsupported MacBook is now running Ventura 13.6, which is a later version than my supported iMac (13.5.1). Thank you!

    I love my 2014 iMac with its beautiful 27" display and was gutted when it fell off the Apple Supported list. But I figured that I just had to live with OS 11 until I bought my next desktop. That is until I stumbled across OCLP and your excellent tutorial. Thank you so much!!

      How well does Ventura run on your iMac? I have a late 2009 21.5" iMac that I just bumped up to 480Gb SSD and 16Gbs of RAM, and just spent all morning getting Big Sur on it. It seems to run pretty well, though I haven't pushed multiple apps much to try to keep the load off. If Ventura runs OK on it I might take the jump. The Nvidia 9400 GPU does give me pause though... not to mention the Core 2 Duo.

    • @juicythedj750
      @juicythedj750 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@damoninlr I went with Ventura for compatibility, but sometimes I wish I could stick with an older OS as it really starts to feel at its limits. I use it mainly for emails, webbrowsing and checking electrical schematics at my work desk. The only issues are minor graphic glitches because of the non Metal GPU. I'd suggest just making a backup and giving it a try yourself though :)

I haven't been able to find if you've done a video addressing the security of OCLP, specifically on the latest version of OCLP and if all macs (even those requiring post-install patches) are benefitting from FileVault, SIP, Secure Boot, Vaulting, etc. Thanks again for your great work!

    • @Mr.Macintosh
      @Mr.Macintosh  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Hello @CosmicHiccup11 great point. The OCLP devs are always trying to find ways to use Apple's native security pieces. For example enabling AMFI was a big deal and the devs were able to do it. I recommend a firmware password and FileVault encryption for data security. Even though OCLP has to reduce some of the security to re enable apple drivers for our old hardware, it could be argued that Ventura is safer compared to high Sierra which has not received an Apple security update in years and is left fully vulnerable.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial, I installed Ventura on a 21.5” mid 2010 iMac and it works incredibly well! It will also be for the i5 680 CPU but I didn’t expect such high performance. The only note is a tendency to overheat in some situations, probably because the OS is designed for more modern CPUs and there is no scruple to use them. However, it has never exceeded 65 degrees and I imagine that a change of conductive paste on 13-year-old CPU and GPU would be beneficial but it is a complex and dangerous job for the myriad of connecters to manipulate. After all, it’s about holding out until the new iMacs with M3 CPUs come out 😉

    Thanks for this video. It took me 3 tries but I finally got it done. I have a mid 2011 iMac and could not update past High Sierra. Some advice, make sure your old OS is in good shape. Maybe do a clean install of the current OS before you start. Then, make sure you do a clean install of Ventura (erase the current HD) and then install. Finally, have a wired USB keyboard and mouse ready to go in case the install does not recognize your Apple Bluetooth keyboard. May not need it but better to be safe than sorry. Then GO!

    Wow I can't thank you enough for this easy to follow video. I have a Mid 2010 27” imac that I loved and stopped using it a couple of years ago when it ceased being functional for my work. I had casually looked at repurposing it every so often but not to be and it was now time for me to relegate it to the computer graveyard…..then I stumbled across your video (thank you youtube for your eclectic algorithm), Why not give it a go. After a couple of hiccups which were completely user errors I now have a fully functional upgrade to Ventura. Amazing… with my 16G of ram it is almost as quick as my current 2020 smaller imac. I still have to figure out some minor connection issues with share and airdrop to my ipad but its amazing.

    Thanks!!🙌 I can confirm a wired Mac keyboard dated 2015 on the back will also work against the issue for the 5.1 Mac Pro from mid 2010. A wired keyboard and usb mouse plugged into the Mac keyboard worked fine. My installation worked fine but was super slow, possibly due to being an older machine? (Xeon 3.46ghz 6 core and 32gb ram at 1333mhz) but also my usb stick took the whole evening to get open core installed onto it, no idea why as it is a 64gb branded usb but hey hi, it worked in the end!! Thanks so much for such a detailed and yet simplified video!

      @@sko556What do you mean if I upgraded from the original GPU? This iMac had default hardware. I only added memory and an SSD.
      I did not upgraded. In order to install Ventura with Opencore you need to do a fresh install. You can make a TimeMachine backup before formatting and then restore it back once you finish with the installation.
      Btw, the opencore install pendrive you need to build will be compatible ONLY with the machine you used to build it. If you want to install opencore in a different mac with different specs, you need to create a new opencore install pendrive for that device.

      @@S1L3nCe Thanks for your prompt sharing. You answers helped me a lot. I have read in the discord web site that they recommend graphic card upgrade for 2011 iMac before using open core to upgrade to Mac OS Big Sur, Monterrey or Ventura. I have already upgraded to SSD and added RAM but I didn’t know how to upgrade the graphic card so I am still learining. One question I want to ask is if air play and air drop and blue tooth still work for iMac 2011 after upgrading Mac Os using Open Core or do you have to upgrade Wi-Fi and blue tooth card ? You upgrade Mac OS from High Sierra to Ventura successfully and everything is working very well ?

    • @S1L3nCe

      @@sko556 I did not upgraded the GPU. I'm still using the AMD that came with the system. And, like I said, I did not upgraded from High Sierra. I created the opencore pendrive Ventura Install from High Sierra but I formatted the SSD when installing Ventura, like it's explain in this video.
      Regarding bluetooth, I have not used it so I'm not sure if it works well. But the Wifi works well.

      @@S1L3nCe Thanks for the reply. I think you upgraded from high Sierra to Ventura using USB drive and open core because such a long jump upgrade in OS cannot be done without USB and open core patcher. Even upgrade from Monterey to Ventura or Big Sur to Monterey need to use USB drive and open core patcher. Any way, I will review the videos when I am free and will decide on whether to do upgrade without graphic and wifi-blue tooth upgrade. I will try to take Mr. Macintosh also, hopefully he reply.

    Your vids are amazing so decided to take the plunge. I have a spotless mid 2014 Macbook Pro with High Sierra (HS) and followed your instructions to the letter. Using OCLP 0.6.8 the install of Ventura went like clockwork with no updates required. Great.. until I noticed my battery on Ventura was only lasting half the time compared to HS, added to this the keyboard was always warm and it did not go into sleep mode when the lid was closed. No worries it was a fun experiment and I decide to go back to High Sierra. Unfortunately getting back to HS was a bit tortuous as I encountered problems trying to reset the Internal storage. I tried the OCLP install then the original HS install versions of disc Utility to try and erase the main drive. Each time after HS was reinstalled the OS disc utility showed up strange partitions. During bootup the screen was black for up to minute before the Apple logo appeared compared to the usual 5 or 6 seconds as if in some sort of recovery mode. Sorry to be this guy but since Catalina onwards sets up the internal Drive differently and with the added complication of the OCLP partition a simple top level erase just didn't work for me. I think you need to find other volumes or groups and erase them first before you do the main erase? Anyway the way I got round it was I eventally got my laptop into Internet recovery to upload it's origional OS which was Yosemite then up graded to High Sierra and in doing so this properly reset the Drive. I think it would be good to show the proper way to reset the Internal Storage before reinstalling a pre Catalina OS if the simple top level erase doesn't quite work. Of course I may just have made an error. Best Jim.

    I followed this Tutorial to install Monterey 12.7.4 on my Late 2013 Macbook Pro 13 Inch Retina with 8MB RAM 1TB SSD storage. This procedure upgraded MacOS Big Sur perfectly. I used OCLP 1.4.3 to accomplish the MacOS upgrade. The only issue I ran into was after about 10-15 minutes of checking the operation after completing the procedure was I received a Popup informing me There was a Hash mismatch on the drive and I needed to reinstall MacOS. I have had zero issues with anything so far after a day of extensive testing. I even installed updated Safari 17.4.1 successfully. As I discovered, it may have something to do with resetting the SMC according to Apple Support. I am waiting to see if the Popup reappears before performing resetting the SMC. I used this tutorial instead of the Monterey one because I understood this better and the OCLP interface was closer to what I used. Thank you for providing such a helpful tutorial to extend the use of perfectly serviceable older, not Apple supported Macs with Apple supported MacOS.

      Now everything works really great. The system works smooth and fast. Little dissapointed in Apple though; these machines will do for years!
