Yep. It literally is a textbook Aristotelian tragedy. The plot drives the changes to the characters through reversal of fortune. Jinx, as a character, is like a perfect embodiment of tragedy. When she tries to do good, it backfires. When she tries to do bad, it backfires. Every chance she has to be "saved" through reunion with Vi is thwarted. In the end, she is the victim of and cause of most of her suffering in a feedback loop. Poor thing.
Arcane is art. It really is a masterpiece.

This scene is insanely impactful. Vi tries to stop her by reminding her of her family- because she sees them as support, and a reason to keep going. But Jinx sees them as nothing but reminders that she killed them, she did something wrong, and that it's all her fault. So, indirectly, Vi makes Jinx break faster

    • @brendaramos2053
      @brendaramos2053 Před rokem +49

Caitlyn also breaks it faster by telling Vi that she is already very lost, when Jinx was in the position of making peace with her sister, in fact, I did not see her with the intention of destroying the consulate, she did it out of pure revenge for the death of silco, although she put the hextech stone in the center of the table, she did it as the symbolic objective that changed her entire life, from the explosion of the monkey bomb, until her death on the bridge fighting with echo which generates that they gave her shine, the fact that caitlyn was looking for it and had VI to get her, and for being an important object for her adoptive father, but she doesn't really care about the hextech stone, she even dropped it in the fight with the firelighters, I think that jinx acts from the feeling, even when she kills, and does not follow any kind of ideology, so much so that throughout the series she makes fun of silco, she did it when she was reborn in the lake and at the same tea party

She tried to kill him as a child. She screwed up his plans. She disobeyed orders. And finally, she killed him. But he still loved her even more than himself. He didn't just believe she had good inside her; he believed her messy, chaotic self was already perfect.

  • @LaSangriaSolitaria
    @LaSangriaSolitaria Před 2 lety +10634

The beauty of this series is that you can't really blame anyone for acting the way they act.
Jinx was forged into what she is through trauma and lies. And now Powder is too far gone and she can't go back. Even if she tried, what kind of sister would she be? She is insane, and if she wasn't insane before Singed got to her, she is now. All she wants is people to accept her as she is, and you can't blame her for that.
Vi loves Powder, she doesn't love the maniacal mess that is Jinx. She always had Powder's back, but the simple reality is that Vi is sane, and Jinx is not, and even if they left together, Vi's entire life would revolve around taking care of Jinx and her mental instability. How can you blame someone who had an outburst at the worst moment of her life and when she tried to make up for it, got kidnapped, and then spent years in prison for a crime she did not commit, idealizing the moment she would get to see her sister back only to find out Powder was not there anymore? Not only that, the demand of killing Cait to get Powder back was just insane. So how can you blame her for acting the way she acted?
And Silco himself never lied to Jinx, he truly believed Vi was dead and when she came back, only saw her as a threat to his daughter, Jinx. His main fault was being an enabler, but Silco himself as an extremist did not see Jinx's knack for destruction and hatred for the topside as something bad. If anything, she was valuable yet a bit unreliable. In the end of the day, he loved Jinx as a daughter, and not Powder. Jinx had everything Powder did not, she was efficient, strong and really cared about destroying topside. So you can't really blame him for fostering the part of Powder (Jinx) that he thought was the most valuable.
And Cait, well, she is just fighting for her life. And you can't blame her for that.

tbh Vi get into prison because she robs jayce's lab room/dorm only because she wants some recognition from vanders and yes she can be blame for that and she brings powder double the blame please
Silco and Jinx tbh nothing i can actually think to blame them, both of them got betrayed by both someone they trust the most vander and vi and it fck jinx up more since it happened when she still a kid and still doesnt understand anything on that time and it hunted her, while i wanna blame jinx for using the gem to make a grenade she still a kid and hextech wasnt a thing till then.
and Cait, well, she is just fighting for her life. You can't blame her for that...just kidding ofc there's something to blame on her if she's not releasing Vi from prison without telling anyone else especially Jayce is the biggest thing you can blame her for, next thing you can blame her is doing something out of order, without thinking. like seriously Marcus could live if not bcuz of her. Oh and did i tell you she did all this bcuz she wants some recognition??? yes she did that so that people accept her "so i wanna be hero and know the world's true reality" dream fcking cunt people wanna get out of the bad place and she wanna go to that place fcking ungrateful as expected from a rich kid and cunt's daughter bitch.

@@kurohanaend6814 Vi was taken by Marcus and then supposedly killed under Silcos orders, then Silco didn't tell Powder anything about what happened to Vi. Thats complete manipulation on Silcos part as he knew that telling Powder the truth would (rightfully) cause her to not want to be with him anymore
I like Silco as a character a lot but I think people are being way too generous to him in his relationship with Jinx. He fucked her up a ton and him loving her in his own way doesn't change the fact that anyone in his postion would universally be considered a bad father
Many real word abusive/neglectful/manipulative parents love their kids in their own way too. But showing love for your kid alone doesn't make you a good parent.

She knows her sister loves her, but she can’t accept Jinx. So Jinx decided to let go of trying to make her. Hope season 2 expands on Vi understanding that if she wants her sister, she’s gotta accept that Powder is gone and Jinx is who she is.

Her speech is so well done. Since episode one we get hints that Powder is battling with her mental illness and inner demons, something that Vi fails to acknowledge until the very end. Of course that Vi cares deeply for her sister and is doing the best she can to connect and comfort her sister, but just like in real life, you need much more than good intentions if you want to support someone who suffers from mental illness.
I love how Jinx refers to herself as "different" instead of "changed", she didn't change into Jinx, she always had it.
Jinx calm and rational final speech shows that she is finally convinced that her sister can't acknowledge the "Jinx" part of her, that Vi will always be stuck with an imaginary version of her innocent younger child (the same young child who got frustrated that her nail bomb didn't pierce to death a kid lol).

There is so much deepness and symbolism in this show and especially in this scene it is mindblowing.
The more obvious: The Cupcake (symoblising Caitlyn) served to VI on a silverplate with the arcane crystal as cherry on top and the shark-bazooka for Silco.
Now to the deeply tragic character of the show in this scene: Powder/Jinx
Up to this scene Jinx/Powder was caught between two personalities, each made for another world, another social environment, which led to her being confused all the time.
Powder created Jinx as a protective shell, because Powder would have never survived without VI in the criminal and harsh environment of Silco (Jinx was created at the exact same spot they are at the final scene, when VI abandoned her at the worst possible moment).
Also since Silco has become her father figure, she formed Jinx as a character he liked and loved.
This scene starts right after she shot Silco to protect VI from getting killed by Silco (in that moment she was Powder), because VI was more important to her (as stated in the lyrics of the song playing in the background of the scene (which is by the way Jinx inner monologue)).
VI on the other hand does not accept Jinx (because she obviously is crazy and has done horrible things).
Unfortunately at this point VIs sister has been Jinx for too long to be able to turn into Powder again.
Jinx clinged to Powder, in the hope that one day her sister might return. Powder is her make believe / self-deception, that she still is a good person that can be accepted and loved by her sister, that everything evil she did can be fixed. Jinx wanted to believe that she can one day be Powder again.
So she now has lost VI because of being Jinx and she has lost Silco because of Powder (Powder shoots Silco to protect VI). All she wanted was to be loved, either from Silco or better yet from her sister VI. But now there is no way this can be achieved.
Since Jinx can't be loved by her sister, she sees no more need for keeping Powder. And since Powder killed the person Jinx loved (Silco) she decides to kill the remains of Powder as revenge.
    ----"Here's to the new us!"
And as Jinx she does exactly what Jinx would do in this moment: blow up the arcane council (which she makes responsible for this situation, because they made demands Silco could not fulfill).
As you see her walking up the ramp you can see in her expression, that she accepted her fate.
It is a deep realisation that she stopped being Powder a long time ago. The confusion is gone, she sees clearly now what she has become.
Even though she doesn't want to do this, she sees no other way. She is in automatic mode.
By pulling the trigger (purple fingernail on triggerfinger; purple=Jinx) and the blue tear evaporating the transition is finished. Powder is gone.
It is also the first time you can see the seriousness in her face, the happy childlike expression is gone.
It is the first time she is fully aware of what she is doing as Jinx (unlike in previous scenes where she killed people like it was a game and also talking about it like it was nothing serious).
And on the same spot where Powder accidentally created misery like a Jinx many years ago, she now purposely brings misery as the Jinx.

Deep down, I think Jinx did that for Vi's sake. I think even after killing Silco, Jinx knew that Vi was still clinging onto the hope of getting Powder back. By blowing up the council, Jinx freed both of them by doing something so horrible that there is no turning back. Now Vi can leave with Caitlin and live top side where she belongs with nothing holding her back.

I believe Powder and Jinx are one in the same in the sense that Powder grew up to become Jinx. Vi's ultimate failure was that she couldn't let go of who her sister use to be and accept the woman she became. That's why Jinx burnt that bridge, because Silco was right in a way. Vi wanted Powder and not Jinx. All it would take is one bad day or psychotic episode before Vi ether gives in and turns Jinx in for "treatment" or gives up and abandons her again.

Vi started the show standing united with her sister against enforcers. Horrified at the enforcers' brutality against Zaunites, including murdering Vi's mother. It's interesting to note that, one way to interperate Jinx quote "You've changed too." could be in reference to when they were little girls and Vi use to talk about fighting the Enforcers and wanting to go to war with Piltover, but Vi isn't that person any more like how Jinx isn't the same little girl who use to look up to Vi. Powder tried so hard to become the person that she though her sister was, then realizing that her sister has changed, and thinking that Vi couldn't love the Person she has become. That also explains a lot the animosity Jinx has towards Cait, her sole presence, the fact that she can exist close to her sister while being an enforcer is painful, because it hints at her sister's change. Its really not a crazy idea Jinx has when she tells her to kill Cait, its the proof she needs that she didn't change, that she can love Jinx as much as she loved Powder. Of course, she was right about what Caitlyn meant, she confirms it during the tea party.

I love how Vi/Jinx mirrors the Topside/Undercity relationship. Even when they try and make things right their methods ignore the trauma Jinx/Zaun has suffered. Vi wants a return to who Jinx was as a child whice ignores the trauma Vi accidently inflicted on her sister. Topside rightly understands they have lost all right to govern Zaun as they cant act in Zaun's best interest. But just allowing them their liberty ignores the exploitation they inflicted upon Zaun for who knows how long. In both cases the damage has been done but instead of Topside/Vi understanding that they owe a debt to the people they hurt, they both chose to try and move on as if they never caused that trauma in the first place and in both cases they pay for it.

But I think that misses an important dimension. Jinx's only model of what unconditional love looks like is Silco, and he doesn't just love her, he enables her worst impulses and behaviors. Vi is absolutely capable of loving Jinx, bloody hands, short fuse, hallucinations, and all, but she will never enable her. The whole scene has so much symbolic meaning. Her just standing there just breathing heavily, we all know this from personal experience when you have to make a hard choice and you know there is no turning back from this. You just stand there, hesitate for a moment because of the gravity of the situation, and then you move forward. She turns the chair around, double taps JINX, part of it is to show the audience her choice and train of thought without words. And that is the great part, you show her inner thoughts and turmoil without even having to say anything. Then she just stands there, head low, breathing even more heavily, the trauma and pain finally made her think clearly, the thoughts from before that she asked for VI to make: Either Powder or Jinx, you decide. It no longer is Vis to decide and neither it is Jinxs, the choice was made for her by reality like everything in life. The last bit of hesitation before she finally sits down and becomes Jinx. She does not just sit on the chair, she EMBRACES the whole chair with her arms, the ful llength. It is once again conveyed to us, the audience, that Powder is gone. Her face looks grim and determined, it is the look of someone who made a choice, who made up their mind about what to. The few lines to her sister are meant more for her than for Vi, she was not sure before but in this moment she knew that she cannot be her sister anymore, she cannot be the person who Vi wants to be. She picks up the gun, she picks up the stone, she gives Vi one last sad look and shoots the rocket. She screams because she seperates the last line that connects her to her sister as Powder while carrying on her fathers will to show the. They include Silcos line to make it absolutely clear to us again. Coupled with this song that spells it out even more clearly what she feels.
They packed soooo much in just the 3 minutes that its just crazy. Feelings, emotion, decidation, characterizations, growth and much much more. And most of all: Nothing was done for cheap feelings or laughs. It was pure, raw emotion and feelings that are based on how people are. It is overlooked but Vi is as broken as her sister, everyone talks about Jinx but the things she saw, the death of her friends and father, the prison, the beatings and time in there destroyed her as much as her sister. Vi sees her sister as the way out of this, as her ray of hope to find normality, she puts all her hopes on her and in this she is being so egoistic but she does not realize any of this because she is just broken herself. She does not realize the harm she does to her sister and how much she fuels her fears and traumas. Silco knew, he saw how much his daughter was being hurt by her and he was getting so angry about this that he just wanted to shoot her so Jinx can stop being in pain. He just wanted to protect her in his own flawed way.
There is just so much grey and gray in this whole series and, if anything, you can say that they all are shaped by their enviroments. Even the "big bad" Silco is nothing but a victim of the circumstances of his surroundings. The war, the betraying of someone who you absolutely trusted and believed in, his finding love for a daughter he never knew he would, his own way of trying to care for someone once again like you never did before. If you ever loved someone you know the fear of losing them and in his case he saw so much in her and the thought of her gone drove him mad. It wouldve killed him even more if she left him for her sister. He wouldve given everything to see her happy, not even when he was seconds away from death he did not want her to cry and be sad that she killed him.
This show is just great, an absolute masterpiece that came out of nowhere.

It's interesting to realize that Jinx is doing everything she can to not be Powder anymore. Deep inside she wants nothing more than to be the Powder that Vi and the others loved, but that Powder is the person that got her friends and father killed; she can't go back to that, because the guilt will destroy her completely. That's why the only road she can take is to completely give in to the persona she's created for herself; be it as a punishment and agreeing with Milo and Vi calling her a jinx, or as an escape from the suffering that rots inside the real her.

From Jayce with his inventions becoming a danger instead of helping people and Caitlyn trying to help but becomes the perceived obstacle, to Vi and Powder going the route they were always on from the beginning. This is all a tale of how we can rage with the idea that we are in control of our destinies when in reality, it's our compulsions that define our character... and history.

Subtle things show Jinx doesn't even like what she's become. Your mother tells you off when you act badly, but she loves you nonetheless and attempts to get you on a better path. Loving someone like that doesnt mean you accept everything they do or aprove of everything they believe in. In a case as hardcore as Vi and Jinx, its incredibly hard ot achieve this sort of connection because it clashes heavily with your morals. But Vi went wrong by not even facing that dilema, instead looking at Jinx as a lost little girl instead of what she is now.

I mean just the fact that she was more than willing to give Vi Powder if she killed Caitlyn just showcases her seething jealousy. The only type of help vi could try to reasonably give her sister is to try to get her to remember who she was before- which if successful would hypothetically get jinx back to something similar to her previous self. That girl who didn't enjoy hurting people or at least to stop hurting people/being violent as a coping mechanism from the trauma of her past. Keep in mind that vi reminding jinx of who she was saved caitlyn from jinx killing her and stopped silco from killing vi.
