- Hello Art Friends! I'm Anoosha Syed, a professional children's book illustrator and today I'm going to go step-by-step in how I illustrate book covers. Specifically, OTHER WORDS FOR HOME, written by Jasmine Warga, published by Harper Collins in 2019.

omg I am a children's librarian and as soon as I saw this gorgeous cover, I immediately put this book out on one of our displays. Imagine my excitement when I stumbled across your channel and saw this thumbnail!

Again late to the party. But I might be a bit of help about colour profiles. Just remember CMYK is for everything printable and RGB is for everything that will be displayed on a screen (some printers work with RGB but they are few and they usually send you their specifications). So if you print a file and al the colours look wrong, super saturated and not at all what you expected, is probably because you were working in RGB and printed that file. You can change this in photoshop by going to Image- Mode and selecting either CMYK or RGB. I apologise for the graphic design nerding (I don't really like graphic design but I graduated as a GD so I drink and I know stuff)

$1500 blew my mind. I worked as a book cover designer in the Philippines for a US publisher (Tate Publishing). We were assigned 11-25 books a month, 2-3 cover options per book, 2-3 revisions. PER MONTH. Guess how much I was paid. A whopping $1 an hour. I also worked with illustrators who worked on completing picture books for roughly $1-3 an hour. Many 3rd world artists are exploited and it took me years to believe my work is worth more than that. Also, the cost of living there is not the same in terms of rent BUT power, water and groceries are close to US midwest prices. I now reside in the US and charge fairly. I just thought it's important that people knew this other reality exists. One good thing that came out of it is that I can work really really fast under pressure. hahaha

Wow a whole a whole month for sketching! Can't wait until I have that luxury. This week I have 2 days for sketching and colour thumbnails, and 2 days for final cover art!🥴 Not complaining though since it's my first children’s book project and a really exciting one! Just extreeeeemely time sensitive..
In my latest book project I was given 5 months! It can totally vary from project to project but definitely as you progress in your career you’ll be able to negotiate for better schedules haha

I just did my first cover commission for two covers using the same illustration (a royal crest as a separate commission for the author to use for other things as well). I didn't know I would enjoy designing covers so much, despite being a writer myself. I had two weeks notice for a rush job, so I was paid extra by this indie self-pub work and made 800$cdn. I think I might have found my calling beyond writing.

Anoosha, have you ever scanned or placed an illustration into the middle of an already-created book cover? I'm pretty good at a lot of of cover design; but I'm trying to get a particular illustration within a cover and I'm curious . . . THANK YOU.

I'm pretty late, but i would like to ask if it is unheard of working in book covers as a traditional artist (i aspire to work in illustrating sci-fi/ fantasy book covers using watercolour in the future)

Thank you! There is a minor difference in the artwork; in a hardcover which has a ‘jacket’, you might need to incorporate a bit more art for the interior flaps and sometimes for a case cover inside. But most of the time it should be the same!

...And here I am taking $1500 for illustrating entire children's books, I need new clients lol. Aside from that THANK YOU so much for posting these videos, they've been really inspiring and helpful to me. Do you have a Discord group set up, or recommend one for children's art? I don't really know other artists in this field personally and it would be great if there was a place I could ask for critique with this industry in mind, I've done 3 books for self publishers but I'm still trying to figure out a more polished & consistent style to work in. Your work is so beautiful and clean looking!

Just a doubt, the dimensions u gave with 300 dpi CMYK, it's the final file right? I don't have any Adobe stuff so will it be completely fine if I did a book cover on procreate a to z?
If you watch my other video on book covers, you'll see that I now work entirely on procreate so it should be totally fine!
I can't explain how amazing this video is! Your honesty about the entire process is great. I would like to know why you have to finalize your drawing on Photoshop. Isn't Procreate suitable for the final piece?
You don’t have to! I think at the time of this video I was using an older version of Procreate. For the past two years I have illustrated all my books entirely on the iPad, no photoshop required

I use procreate on my iPad :) I don’t recommend any particular program since they all would be good to use regardless of style I think.
