  • Before I start I'd like to say a huge thank you to the partnership between Leinster Rugby & Optimum Nutrition for making this happen!
What an experience, this is one of a series of 3 Video from the Leinster lads giving us a rare insight into what makes them so effective on the pitch.
One of Leinster biggest strengths is Speed of Ruck, and Caelan Doris touches on here what they all do to be so effective. From Carrying hard and having options to how important ball placement is.
Caelan highlights that even they (International players) work on ball placement drills post session! That for me is huge! ask yourself the Question, "Do you work on Ball Presentation skills on your own?" and if you do, do you work on the recoil at speed like Leinster showcase here?
Simple and basics done So well! this was awesome to witness.

why is no one doing this in world cup. all the players are still posting the ball back the traditional way

I agree with the presentation and overall goal of this technique but in my opinion it would only be really effective in semi-professional rugby and above. My reasoning is that by using this technique it would take away from an effective ball carry and by landing on your side you are vulnerable to poachers. Junior players don't have the Rugby IQ to make the right decision on the ground and if you told them to use this technique they would result in turning too early in contact and produce a less effective ball carry. Also what if your legs are trapped and you cant move ? Then your ball placement is back to being a prawn etc.. Just my thoughts, but great content mate !!!

Ye I totally get where you're coming from, looking at the kids development I would take from this video snippets to meet the kids where they are at in their development and understanding of the game. they probably won't have the core strength to shoot the ball back fast initially but they will develop It over time. what I love about this video is Caelan Doris mentions they (Leinster) practise this skill pre or post sessions. so if we can add this skill into our warm ups and highlight the importance of the fight too get the ball into a clean position after we hit the floor it will improve over time. But as Coaches of grass roots teams you have to cover so much in such little time its hard to manage what you focus on, thats why if we can get the players to spend 5mins of their own time working on this it will make a huge difference, but thats a hard task ha. (thats why I have built the Membership ) .
With regards to Landing on your side. I do like players landing on the ball when being tackled this can help get into positions fast and cut out the poachers. The players landed on their sides here because the main focus was the ball presentation, it was a very low level session so I didn't want the players to get injured from my filming as his was 4 days before the Final ha.
Really good points mate, and I agree its about meeting the players where they are at. The tips from the pro's you can just take bitesize info to suit your players as you might have some who are beginners and some who are more advance. You can slide up and down the skill detail continuum to suit the player.
Finally thank you for commenting mate, this feedback helps me massively as there are tones of coaches out there with more team coaching experience than me so it helps me think outside the box on how I can help putting content to hit all levels and situations. Cheers. Ben

If we removed the beast that is the tackle shield away from junior players and gave them problems to solve then I think you'd be pleasantly surprised about their decision making. Running into lumps of foam (too often the norm) takes away any decision making and relevance. Also important the language and briefs we give are accurate and encouraging. I'm asking players to try and beat the defender and present only if an offload/pass isn't available....the pre contact footwork therefore making presentation easier and a speedier ruck process.

Step 1 : jump (fly) off feet in every ruck while no ref sanctions it. That’s all the steps
