      What was really lost in the analysis is how Adeleke literally pulled the soul out of the Dutch team. Klaver made a colossal error and tried to sprint early with Adeleke. Completely mis-judging who she was running against. Klaver effectively ran out of gas around the 300M mark and put the Dutch team in a hole not even Femke could dig them out of.

    Great relay from the Irish, a well deserved gold!
    I'm from the Netherlands, so I appreciate the attention, but yes, the Irish were overlooked too much by the commentator.
    It should have been clear from the World Relays that they were going to challenge the Netherlands for gold here.
    Klaver started her run way more back in the field than she probably expected (first runner faded bad), tried to make up the difference AND keep up with Adeleke (who is the better 400m runner). The last 2 runners from the Netherlands performed well, but even though Femke Bol ran the fastest split time, the race was already lost.
    (Also, Mawdsley only ran 0.2s slower than Bol, so she would have been a problem either way 🙂)
    In Paris I suspect Ireland and the Netherlands are gonna be quite equal, so it's gonna be exciting to see.
    I don't expect gold from either team though, as the USA team has much better male 400m runners ...

    Not sure what athletics that British commentator has been watching recently. This result was no surprise if he had been watching recent performances. Adeleke has Klaver's number all day, every day. Only Bol might be a problem for her, but the Netherlands were well beaten by the time of the final changeover. Femke Bol is a wonderful athlete , but she might be a little bit 'over-raced', which is a bad thing in an Olympic year. Hard to judge the standards on a global level here without the US, Caribbean and Africa athletes.

    • @_MicZ_
      @_MicZ_ Před 17 dny +5

      I agree with most of your comment, but I don't agree on Femke being 'over-raced'.
      She ran the fastest split of all the female athletes and executed her leg well, there was simply too much of a gap to make up for.
      In terms of meets, 2024 is probably one of her least busy years and her entire season is aimed towards Paris.
      For a lot of elite European athletes these European Championships are considered a good "test trial" for the Olympics ...

      Actually it's very easy to judge the standards on a global level. The Irish time last night of 3:09.92 is 1.12 seconds off the world record set by the US in 2023 and 0.05 seconds outside the European record which was set by Poland at the Tokoyo Olympics in 2021.
      The US won the World Relay Chanmpionship with a time of 3:10.73 at the start of May. Ireland were 3rd there with a time of 3:11.53 which was the Irish record. So the team last night took the Irish record time down by 1.6 seconds in less than 1 month.
      If they can produce similar form in Paris they will definitely be in with a shout of a medal which for any Irish track team is an incredible achievement.
