- It's been rough for TommyKay in Crusader Kings 3...The game just isn't what CK2 is, it lacks roleplay and this makes it a lot worse for Tommy to play. But our hero might have a found way to make CK3 enjoyable yet again. The new, improved and quite frankly overpowered "TALL KINGDOM" strategy! This is a strategy where you only focus on building tall which means just investing all the money into your own lands and only improving what you already have, which means that there isn't a lot of expansion early. This overpowered strategy will show you how Vienna became the richest city in the world. THIS IS HOW TO GET RICH IN CK3!

I feel like if you’re a really experienced paradox player then it’s underwhelming. But for a first time paradox player like myself it’s a heavy game of the year candidate. Because it introduced me to this dope genre, but it wasn’t impossible to get into
Really! I tried to get into CK2 few years ago, but it was so complicated that i was just lost. Didn't really understand tutorial (I'm not a native English speaker, so it was pretty hard) + really complicated and misleading interface. CK3 basics are so much easier to understand

This. I feel like ck3 is more friendly towards the new player. When ck2 got free, i tried it but it just seemed so utterly complicated with a cluttered and inefficient interface. Got ck3 as a gift, and within an evening i managed to unite Ireland - not a lot, but at least as a new player i managed to do something. Ck3 feels more streamlined, with a competent interface and overall structured to be playable without watching six 40 minutes long CZcams tutorials

I don't understand this 'No Roleplay' meme. The stress feature forces you to play according to your traits which is more than what CK2 ever did. Yes the game is a bit bare bones atm but it's the base game, CK2 had 6 years of DLC behind it.

I guess it's that barebones aspect, since it's not merely to do with traits, but the lack of events outside of ones where you make a decision for it to occur. Additionally, while the stress system forces you to play in more accordance with traits, that in addition to your traits practically being permanent makes characters seem so close-minded. There isn't that opportunity to evolve or change your character not merely for strategy, but role-play as well. My favorite character in CK2 was a rowdy child who became brawny and ambitious upon coming of age, going to war for much of his adulthood, before realizing that the bloodshed may not be worth it, ushering in an era of peace that ultimately lasted until his death, allowing him to also become a Nestorian saint. And I feel such a character would not have been possible to have if not for the multitude of events, the opportunity to change traits at various times and so on. By CK3 standards, he would've probably gotten stressed, started smoking weed, and enter the long line of forgotten characters, because I could not change him or flesh him out. So while the stress system may encourage some level of roleplay, I feel like that in addition to the lack of events may impede some level of story-telling and roleplay, limiting the possibility of a "redemption arch" or good character turning to evil as a result of their court. Sorry this is a bit wordy, I get carried away quite easily.
Mr. Anarchadia True. Events where such a big part of CK2 and they really made each play through feel a bit different. If they could make more and maybe some custom events for certain regions or characters, that would be really cool.
@@brandimason331 Mate CK2 came out in 2012. It's now 2020. They have had plenty of time to make CK3 far bigger than CK2 but they did not. There is literally no excuse.
I think this quite a bit unfair on CK3, sure it's lacking in content but as a release is far better than other titles, I doubt that you could have judged what CK2 would have ended up being by playing its base release.
Why have we as a culture come to accept shit releases. So many games released nowadays you look at and go, 'Oh this will be good in 5 years time after a lot of patches and dlc'. Why? Back in the day, when companies couldn't nickel and dime us, when games couldn't be digitally patched, they released full products, you got a full game. Now companies like paradox know they can sell us the whole game over the next five years in pieces after making us pay full price up front, because people like you just suck it up. The modding scene shows that they could easily make more complete games, they just can't be arsed.

Imo playing a small count is the most fun, because you don't have to be constantly swaying your vassals and micromanaging so your realm doesn't fall apart, which means you can focus a bit more on the RP of it, but with that Tribals are best because they can get money and a decent amount of troops as a count so they can still have an influence.

I think you feel like the game is missing a lot because you're not trying to play on the renown much, placing dynasty on another throne and such, it's a major part of the game especially since it's basically the only form of score in the game.
Personally, for me I really enjoy the relaxed state I can be in playing the game but another thing personally is I believe the game will be much more fleshed out with each new DLC. Look at the base game Stellaris compared to the newest addition. The new updates and DLC give you probably an extra 100+ hours alone.

I feel like I don’t actually run into many problems pre-primogeniture because I usually rush the “whole of body” tree in education focus to get restraint and know thyself at the very least. Realistically, it only takes a few years to get those two traits and they set you up pretty well to know almost exactly how succession is going to go if you pay attention, plus if you run the entire tree to get the “whole of body” trait your character ends up living something crazy broken like 15 years longer than normal almost every time (outside of external events that happen like murder and shit), at least in my experience, and that’s dope for ANY character. The reasons I feel like it’s a must for every character is because I usually try to make sure I get a comfortable two sons and then cut my dude right the fuck of by becoming celibate with the restraint perk, so I don’t screw myself over by having 100 possible heirs, and then know thyself let’s you know a year in advance of your death so you can tie up any lose ends that may be in succession by doing something like disinheriting one of them. I also keep my main heir faaaaar away from the battlefield by forbidding him from being a knight, or any of the other cultures special units, so there aren’t any stupid accidents ending in his death on the battlefield. Then in the case that one or both of my sons do actually die you can reverse the celibacy decision any time after 12 months of your initial move to become celibate and just seduce women until you get another son to be the heir. On top of that I almost always prioritize marrying for the intelligence traits: quick, intelligent, and genius. The smarter and more intelligent your head of dynasty is combined with a good education stat level the quicker you can research technologies and advancements in order to unlock certain special buildings that require certain techs (I’m looking at you Tower of London and the burhs innovation.... motherfuckers) and to get to stuff like feudal societies and primogeniture even quicker, because let’s be honest.... that’s like the main goal hahaha. On top of all that jazz, if your super smart character that you’ve crafted lives longer, then he gets to research longer as well. So if you have a stupid heir with a bad education stat you can at least milk out a bit longer of better research speed. I feel like it all ties in and there are so many useful perks that can be had, such as the whole of body one and the perks underneath it like I mentioned. It’s definitely worth taking some time to read over them all and then strategize on your own how to cheese it based on whatever stats or personalities your characters end up with

Do Paradox employees get paid ten times more than the employees of other devs? Paradox don't even need to do some high tier graphical design for their games because their focus is always scripting and ye olde numbers.
There's devs like Larian Studios who made Divinity: Original Sin 2, a game with more than a million words of dialogue alone, partially funded by a Kickstarter of all things. Oh, and the game's Definitive Edition doesn't even cost 60 bucks on Steam. It costs 45.
Stop pretending like Paradox are broke wretches who need Bill Gates' entire fortune just to shit out a game that'll be worthy enough to be called a "finished" product after 10 years of DLC and a $300 price tag when other devs don't need to do so. That's no justification for a bullshit business model. I'd expect them to have done it for their first couple games, but even now, after all they've milked hundreds of dollars from singular people, they still somehow put out incomplete products like CK3, that while they have their pluses, they're ultimately lacking in content compared to their predecessors. It's just a heavy load of bullshit.

Exactly. The base mechanics of CK3 is so much better than CK2! I wouldn't even say that there isn't roleplay, it's just not crazy out of control immortaility, satanic, magic shit from ck2. Your character's relationships with other characters and their self commentary is more developed and realistic than CK2. And Lifestyles in CK3 is so much better than CK2 you actually begin to understand your character as more than stats if you really pay attention. Tommy going into CK3 with a CK2 mindset and it's ruining his fun. I can easily say I enjoy CK3 more than CK2 and learning all the new mechanics and strategies makes it super fun.
I mean I like Paradox don't get me wrong but there's no reason to suck them off this hard. They could have totally added in so many more features for launch no problem but they would rather release a semi-finished product then charge you more to finish it(idk how much CK2 was at the end but for EU4 the total cost of the "complete game" is over $200 at this point). Yeah CK3 is *eventually* going to be a really good game but that doesn't mean we have to defend this shitty ass business model. I shoulda learned my lesson with Imperator but I baited myself into buying CK3 anyways. Definitely going to hold off on future paradox releases till at least the first DLC, they literally do this shit with every grand strategy they make. I'm not even saying the DLCs aren't (usually) worth the price in the end, I just want them to stop releasing games with the bare minimum amount of features. CK3 was better than Imperator but not by that much, they're both huge content wastelands.

I had my last game in Pandya Nadu and by 1200 I had 100 development in Madurai, +200 income, 50000 in the bank, all available buildings and largest army in the world with 30000 troops. All of that with 10 counties under direct control and no vassals at all (except baronies obviously)

I think the game has great potential with updates/dlc's like CK2. CK2 lacked quality at start but got great later on. I hope the same is with this game

I like CK3 so far, but it has a long way to go. It needs way more events, shorter and more personal plots , BE MORE RANDOM, and bring back big features like societys, artifacts, and maybe even all the features from reaper's due.

If you think Cologne has a good unique building, you should see Constantinople. It has both the Hagia Sophia in the unique slot and the Theodosian walls in the Duchy slot. Both of which are very strong
Vienna was my first achievement attempt in ck3, attempting to go for Rome and Rags to riches. I failed.
Though my strategy was kind of similar to yours apart from that i just killed my liege until I was given the duchy and also killed your half brother and his sons in the duchy south of you at the start date to inherit that. Unfortunately though I got screwed over by weird inheritance of my liege leading me to lose like half of my land that i had worked for.
Tommy should try out the Princes of Darkness mod for CK3, it's actually a lot of fun.

Ok, so Just played as count of Koln. Started as count of Zutphen, so I control 3 counties only. converted to Waldensian and Dutch so I can hold Church holding myself and so I can be culture head. Started in 1066 and 101 years in I am making 50+ gold a day and beat England and Byzantium in a war solo. Building tall is very strong and easy.

I like ck3 bc it's a good start into paradox games so you can kinda get a feeling for them
I do agree it feels empty at times. Also if you think the Count of Vienna having 5 counts is bad, take a look at Egypt. There are only two vassals to start (your kids if I remember correctly), and the Sultan has like 15 or 16 personal demesne. There are way too few vassals, and no justification for such rulers holding so much other than "Oh, we dunno who held this then, and we don't wanna just insert random characters [even though that's what the AI does anyway])." The primary solace though is that my friends who would've never gotten it did because it looked cool. And while it's an easier introduction to Crusader Kings than in 2, I feel like they're missing out on so much, from Glitterhoof, to immortality, and many more memes than the are present in CK3. Hell, most of them haven't even played till a character death yet, so they don't know about confederate partition, which is gonna be "fun" explaining to them.
immortality was a dumb mechanic. And base CK2 also didn't have glitterhoof immortality or any of way of life features.

I picked up ck3 as one of my first ck3 type like games and it was really confusing and then got really fun but then it just got really boring, I keep looking for new starts but I never seem to get a character I am enjoying playing

hey tommy, can u help me out? u seen to know a lot from this game lol so im new at crusader kings, playing the ck3 first time, didnt even saw a video about the others ck. so im playing as a jarl of skane and notice that my army dont increase the quality above the silver symbol, i tried only man at arms and nights and didnt work either. im a pretty awesome commander with 32 prowess and 25 martial (cheated character to try improving quality) and nothing works at all. can u or someone help me ? awesome videos btw, thanks for all.

Yeah I agree with the closing statement. It's evident that Tommy isn't enjoying this playthrough at all and this is the first TommyKay video that I haven't enjoyed watching. I thought I would really enjoy it because I'm enjoying building tall right now (and CK3 in general since I did not play CK2 or any other paradox game before this one so this is my first one) but this wasn't the case. Hope when the DLC comes out Tommy will start enjoying this game a lot more because I love his content and I personally love this game.

All I wanna say is that hoi4 as a minor also just boils down to "join major faction, let them win war with you, take land, turn agains them"
Personally I like ck3 and have already clocked 150 hours on the game and still on my first play through. I feel if you try to cheese the game by getting the best traits every game you will get bored easily. I think if you follow your character traits it adds so much more enjoyment to the game. Also being on Confederate succession for most of the game is quite stressful but I think its makes sense because once you form a empire you can easily stream roll the AI because they font form defense pacts with each other.

Strongest Playing Tall duchy is Bohemia is 867. Culture is only in 8 counties and everything is connected to Praha meaning you can stack development in Praha and now your research is insane. Bohemia has a number of challenges as you border Christian East Francia and Bavaria so concerting is often the easiest route after some early raiding.

my strat usually relies on the pope i just make a character within the 400 range with decent stewardship decent diplomacy and high learning use that high learning to get a good child all the while you develop your holdings using pope money i played as denmark and oh boy was the strategy powerful i even managed to double the size of my kingdom
oh not to mention I got a hell of a good kingdom(tip to make sure your heir is nice if ur catholic ask them to take vows if ur not you shud be greek and castrate your sons
(also once you get a good son give the titles you conquered to him it will help in time since they will get more titles thus he can get his own loyal vassals
plus the extra money is always nice

my biggest problem with ck3 is that there really is no late game money sink. it's so easy to get to a thousand gold or more really not even that late into the game and just nothing to spend it on.
