  • Recently, Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk had some words of wisdom for software developers out there. In a tweet, Musk shared the following:
"Never release software on a Friday. It's the worst day of the week. People are irritable, narcissists are in charge, and the end result is always disaster."
So what does Musk have to say about the infamous "Friday effect"? According to Musk, it's the reason why releasing software on a Friday is always a problem. Here's why:
People are usually rushed on Fridays and their emotions are running high. This results in mistakes being made, software being released broken or even deleted, and overall disaster.
Of course, Elon Musk didn't say any of this. In fact he wants to release software on Friday's because he doesn't know how to develop software.

Agreed. I recently did a build/deploy to Prod on a Monday, when I had the option of doing it on the prior Friday. It was a no-brainer. I want support folks readily available. If issues arise, I'd rather reach out to them on a Monday evening, than a Friday when they're half drunk at happy hour. 😆

Oh we solely release on fridays so we can check the weekend for issues and fix those before we go live on Monday. And we have the luxury at this department that we don’t have 24x7 but 24x5. And service windows are always planned based based on different factors. The other department I worked for had CIA rating of 121 so availability was basically never down 99.999%. There we really had to be sure that stuff worked and update green and blue separately. Which often was very difficult because of data structures changed in one version you already had to build them the previous version so that software could run with that in case the instance updated those
. Pfffff
. That wasn’t fun to juggle!

Most likely a trick to get his 120 hours out of his employees.😱

This is incredibly subjective. How about...Release when you want but make sure you have provisions in place.

If you want to release on Friday I'm not going to save your foot.
