    I find it hilarious that the ship of 'dorky smart nice boy' and 'hot strong badass girl' has literally been with us as a ship since the concept of shipping has existed to the point that the fucking Goddess of shipping was the first to like it. Headcanon: the bear who adopted Atalanta is Callisto, the nymph follower of Artemis who was seduced by Zeus (while disguised by Artemis, which has created a lot of speculation on whether this meant Artemis and Callisto were lesbian lovers) and after getting pregnant, got turned into a bear (sources differ on whether it was Zeus, Hera or Artemis who did this, all having their own reasons).
    My headcanon goes further: first, after discovering Callisto was pregnant, Artemis believed the nymph intentionally broke her vows and banished her from the group, before going off to Mount Olympus to cry to Daddy Zeus about how Callisto had betrayed her. This was how Zeus found out that the nymph in question was pregnant - with HIS child... and Hera was able to deduce from his expression what was what, and this lead to Artemis realizing the truth, that Callisto had been tricked and technically never betrayed her.
    It then became a race between the three gods to find Callisto. Zeus and Artemis found her first. Zeus took his new son, Arcas, and hid him away from Hera, while Artemis, thinking quickly, turned Callisto into a bear. At first, she claimed that it was to punish the nymph - but she only said this to soothe Hera. Artemis' real reason was to give Callisto an excuse to re-join the huntresses: since she was no longer a virgin, it would be sacrilege of her to join their group. BUT, if she were a bear, a wild animal with no cause to follow any vows of chastity, then of course she could join them!
    So Callisto happily rejoined the huntresses, happy to be back with her friends (and potential lesbian partner), although she was still sad about being parted from her baby... and that's where Atalanta comes in. Since the foundling is a girl, she's completely eligible to join Artemis and her huntresses. Thus Callisto has found comfort in taking care of a baby.
    So yeah, Atalanta got to grow up with both a bear and Artemis as mother figures. Also, Artemis never had Atalanta take any "virginity vow", just in case... and that worked out when Atalanta's father claimed her and insisted she marry.
    I also read this on wikipedia regarding Atalanta and Hippomenes getting turned into lions: "This view has been criticized, however. In her book The Amazons: Lives and Legends of Warrior Women across the Ancient World, Adrienne Mayor argues there is no evidence to support the notion that the Ancient Greeks believed male and female lions could not engage in sexual intercourse. Rather, Mayor contends the transformation of Atalanta and her lover into lions occurred at a moment of emotional and sexual bliss, which can be interpreted as divine sympathy for a couple who defied traditional Greek gender roles, and thus turning them into lions enabled the lovers to hunt and mate together for all eternity outside of Greek society, which would not have accepted their relationship."
    So my headcanon also includes Atalanta and Hippomenes as pet lions to Artemis. The goddess can't accept men into her group, but she has no problem with male animals being around.
    This means that Artemis has a pet bear and two pet lions. :D

    • @Mech299
      @Mech299 Před 6 měsíci +9

      An excellent theory! Punctured just slightly by the fact that Artemis was the Virgin Goddess of Hunting. It's not that men weren't allowed, just that men usually lacked the self control to avoid chasing after the fairer sex, according to the myths.
      It's why Hippolytus was so noteworthy, he was a hunter of Artemis by choice, and perfectly allowed. He only died because a queen tried to seduce him, was rebuffed, and her husband got Poseidon to kill him. And given that Artemis was the *VIRGIN* Goddess, her having a lesbian lover is equally as antithetical to her existence. More likely Calysto was just an extremely good friend and that's was what motivated her to help Calysto out. But her no longer being a virgin, even if it wasn't by choice, means that she couldn't be part of the hunting group anymore.
      Artemis has been VERY strict about that, as evidenced by how she turned Actaeon into a Deer just for accidentally seeing Artemis naked.

    I do love how this big strong woman's story isn't bogged down by meeting "gasp, an equally strong man who isn't a jerk for no reason" in fact she only becomes friends with that fella before he dies, but the way she meets her love is by just actually talking to him and not hating the guy, and when he obviously cheats in the race with distractions she gets entertained by the game of bloody fetch.

    Actually Atalanta's not the only female Greek hero! Another one is Cyrene, who shepherded the sheep and scared away all the wild animals while her father was at war. While she was fighting bears, Apollo fell in love with her and took her to Africa. He then founded a city and named it after her (still exists) in what is now called Libya. After a while Cyrene got bored in her palace with Apollo being gone most of the time (he was a god, after all) and decided to go back to her home town and continue slaying bears. She did and Apollo wasn't mad because he kind of understood she got bored. Then after some time Ares came down because he was impressed by her fighting skills, they fought each other, then kissed and had a son, Diomedes (yes, that Diomedes). A few months later she grew bored again and went back to Africa. There she had a heart-to-heart with Apollo, she decided she'd rather be in Africa and he turned her into a nyad. She lived happily ever after.

    Meleager deserves a special recognition for his treatment of Atalanta with respect, stood up for her, gave her the credit that she was rightfully due (as she not only landed the first blow but most likely saved his life), and prevented the other hunters from trying to take her reward from her by force; such men: princes, heroes or otherwise are incredibly rare in ancient mythology world wide.

    I remember reading a version of the myth where Meleager and Atlanta were actually in love with each other so she was very torn up about him dieing. Hippomene’s reminded her of him when he was hunched over and hiding the apples because that was the same way Meleager looked before he died. The apples also brought up some memories and Atlanta either decided that this was the person she was going to marry and purposely lost or.... was too distraught to actually finish the race.

And then there's Galahad, who was made to be even better at everything and the guy to find the Grail while Lancelot was subsequently demonized. Considering that and the fact that we basically treat mythology as a grab bag rather than a strict canon at this point, is what Fate did really that bad?

      @skaryzgik Před 2 lety +6

      I kinda think of it as Hippomenes outsmarting Aphrodite into giving Artemis a plausible-sounding excuse to allow one of her favorite mortals to be happy.
      This girl is so awesome! I *wish* I could be worthy of her. Clearly these other guys aren't; she's straight-up killing them! How do I be *not* like them? I guess the biggest thing they've got in common is not respecting her. Which, is already a way I can stand out.
      But I still have to win the contest somehow. Even if she does somehow like me, she can't just call off the contest, without having to deal with all those other guys she started the contest to get rid of.
      But how can I win? I can't possibly outrun her. *No one* runs faster than her! At least... not if she's trying seriously...
      But if I can get her attention before that, maybe I can somehow *signal* her, that I am different? Hmm, she still couldn't call off the contest. But maybe, if she decides somehow that she does like me, she could lose on purpose? But she'd have to find a way to make it not too obvious, or all the other guys watching would get mad. They might not kill her for that, but they might kill me. If *she* kills me for the contest, that's fair and square, in the terms of her own contest rules. That's a risk I'm signing up for. But if I do win, I don't want the other *contestants* to kill me. So, on the off-chance I manage to stand out to her somehow and she does like me somehow, she needs to have an "excuse" for losing the race.
      Maybe one of the gods could help. Divine intervention is one of the best possible excuses. I suppose Aphrodite would be the obvious choice, this being about love and all, but... Atalanta is one of the best hunters in history. She's *clearly* got some sort of tie to Artemis. And she and Aphrodite don't tend to get along very well. If Aphrodite realizes her help would be making one of Artemis's favorite people happy, she might not help. She might even make things worse. When she's mad at someone, she does sometimes even get in the way of people in love, just to hurt those she's mad at.
      What if I find a way to frame this as somehow "tricking" Artemis? Aphrodite's always trying to interfere with people dedicated to Artemis, and steal them from her influence into her own. If we can frame this that way, Aphrodite might not notice that Artemis *might* even *like* what's going on.
      Trying to deceive one of the gods is always risky business, and not even just for mortals. But... if I'm doing this for love, that's got to be my best chance of being forgiven by Aphrodite. ...right?
      Welp, here goes, I guess....

    Atalanta is actually my favorite hero in Greek mythology.
    In the version of the story I read, she just zips over to the apples because they're golden and she figures 'Hey, I'm awesome, I can just detour real quick and steal beat this kid. Hell! A snail in a coma could beat this kid in a foot race, I've got pllllenty of time!'. It's a classic 'Tortoise and the Hare' scenario. Her hubris was, because every man always underestimates her, she underestimates every man (except Jason).

    I like the version that I read as a kid where Hippomenes is wins the race and Atalanta DIDN'T let him win. She later sits down to have supper with him on their wedding night and after talking for a few falls in love with him because his Literally radiates joy to the extent that it can infect the gods. AKA the reason he got the golden apples in the first place. The story implies that some men can be so innately good and full of cheer that they are capable of bringing out the loving side of even the most murder happy and violent of women.

      As much as this story is amazing, I wish Meleager didn’t die,
      Even if he isn’t the “Best boy” he was my favorite
      Don’t care if he doesn’t end up with her I just wanted him to be alive

      @@johnapple6646 actually, whenever someone made an offer to Olympus she was always the first one to receive it, even before Zeus. So in reality it's the opposite. It was basically mandatory to remember Hestia in ancient Greece.

    I actually really like this version of the story! There's something sweet in Atalanta intentionally losing against Hippomenes because she's developed a sweet spot for him and didn't want to see him killed.
