  • An unlikely triathlete pens a love letter to her body.
    Transcript
    Dear body, this is Leona.
    You are an athlete.
I have not always believed this,
nor have you always lived the life of an athlete,
but you have always been one.
I remember the day that I realized that you
were almost pounds and the warning the doctor gave me.
It clicked in my head that if I did not make changes
to make my life healthier, you would not be around
to see my nieces graduate high school.
I started working out with a personal trainer
and a nutritionist and you began shedding weight
    and getting stronger.
I would see people in my community running
and I wanted you to be able to do that.
So I found my running coach and my running club
    and my life changed.
I found a community of people who supported each other
and supported you on this crazy journey.
They were there to cheer you on for my first
    half-marathon, my first triathlon,
and too many five-Ks to count.
It has not always been easy.
    You've had injuries and setbacks.
There have been times when I did not believe in you.
But I have found motivation in my community of people
    in real life and online.
I look at pictures of my nieces and I remember
    that is also about them.
I not only wanna be their favorite aunt,
but I also wanna be their role model.
I've now started my life over in New York City
a week before my th birthday,
and I'm ready for new adventures
and new ways of proving that you are strong
and you can do anything, and helping other women
see that they are as well.
Body, I will never stop believing in you
and I will never doubt that you are an athlete again.
    I am amazed by you.

@@Kira-de3dl It's good that she's trying but she needs to cut calories. How do I know this you may ask? If she's running all these 5 kilometers marathons, triathlons and doing all that cardio and still has nothing to show for it, it means that she probably isn't in a hypo caloric deficit meaning that she's eating more than she's burning. She's going to hurt her knees. Running on it's own is already stressful enough on your knees but being 350-300 range is going to kill your knees faster than you could say kilometer. I hope nothing bad happens but this is probably more dangerous than it could ever be helpful. But aleast she's trying. That's a start, but a better start would be to lose weight by cutting calories and then start cardio and ease yourself into it.

Right after the election of Obama our society began to get really mean and hateful. Our country is currently in a social civil war so anything that smacks of self-improvement or enjoyment of life will be met with negativity. I always allow the negative commentators to boost my drive. They sit safely behind a computer spewing hate rather than actually doing anything constructive. The more hate one gets should be an indication that they are doing something right. For example, look at who trolls target more: Obama, Hillary Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, academicians...the very epitomes of success.

J E actually I bet a lot are jealous. How many of the trolls on here have run a marathon? A triathlon? They probably get winded running to the bathroom. And is she fat? Yes, she is. Do you realize how long it takes to take off 100-150 pounds? We’re not talking crash diets. I’m talking healthy dietician approved diets. She will take anywhere from a year to 2 years to take it all off. Possibly even longer if she had hypothyroidism Or PCOS. I’m sorry, but it seems if your overweight you can’t win . If you’re fat and you don’t exercise, then your disgusting. If you are fat and exercise, then you’re hilarious AND your not losing weight fast enough. You just can’t win.

Leona, you are amazing! I love you.
I've always been a plus size athlete, and no matter how many times I go on starvation diets, I've always been very heavy. I had to finally accept I was going to have a large body no matter what, even when it didn't make sense.
I love being athletic, and have always been very strong & agile, when people would judge me harshly. When I was a runner, people would actually yell at me expletives for being fat, as I ran past them. Go figure, when I'm totally exercising my guts out. Many times others working out at the gym would give me dirty looks or talk disparagingly about me, again while I'm working my a** off at the gym.
I am not measured by the ignorance of others.

Elaine Marie, good for you. Keep moving! Movement is life.
I recommend you never go on a starvation diet again; they backfire terribly almost all the time. Concentrating on what I should eat, instead of on what I mustn’t eat, and moving moving moving every day got me from a BMI of 31 to a BMI of 25, and I’ve stayed there for 17 years now. I’d be slimmer & more fashionable at a BMI of 22, but going hungry will backfire and is not sustainable for me. It’s better to never be fat again than to try for the unreachable dream.

WARNING DON’T READ IF YOU GET PISSED VERY EASILY
Ok first I wanna say that’s actually awesome that she decided not to stay as she was and celebrate herself being “plus sized” (AKA fat) and actually put in the work to have a healthy body. That’s amazing and inspirational.
But obesity should not be normalized whatsoever. And I notice that it’s only normalized for women for some reason. Remember that magazine with the “plus sized” woman on it. Imagine if they switched genders, and put a “plus sized” man onto a magazine. People would flip their shit. Also when these people talk about “plus sized” men they ain’t scared to call em fat.
I’m just saying you females want equality but it seems to me like y’all wanna be better.
Back to the whole “plus sized” thing, I think it’s ridiculous that obesity is a thing people are trying to say is normal. Bring an obese fat lard is not normal, and it’s not something to be celebrated. People who are fat shouldn’t be celebrating their body that could possibly be life threatening, they should be doing what the woman in the video is doing and work their ass off for a healthy body. These people always bring up statistics when trying to normalize obesity. About 40% of Americans will at some point get cancer as of mid 2018. Should it be a thing that’s celebrated and normalized? Hell no! People dedicate their whole life’s to try to get rid of cancer and both cancer and obesity are life threatening. All obese people should strive to do what the woman in the video is doing.
I also have complete respect for people who take meds that make them fat or people who are not able to stop their fatness.
Feel free to debate in the comments vvvvvv

I agree with you 100%. We shouldn't be normalizing obesity but more women should have a similar mindset to Leona, where they want to make changes to benefit their well being and health.

Agreed, the worst kind of trolls hateful trolls. It's one thing to make fun of a situation with comedy. But, some people see themselves as less than nothing and then they project that hate onto the internet in the form of negatively online. Quite sad imo

PLEASE don't call this woman an ATHLETE! An athlete is someone who has reached PEAK physical condition and is competetive in their sport. This is just a person trying to LOSE WEIGHT not an ATHLETE. Please do not devalue to word "athlete"
