  • A North Wales man who claimed to have made a record-breaking trip from John O’Groats to Land's End has been cleared of criminal charges.
Thomas Davies, 29, was accused of completing the 837-mile journey in the fastest ever land time of 9 hours and 36 minutes in an Audi A5 S5.
Truro Crown Court heard he waited six months before boasting of his feat - a journey that would usually take 15 hours - on an online blog.

In British law, it really does depend on the judge.
If you get a judge who drives a Nissan Leaf at 19mph through his village on the way to waitrose for caviar, he will throw the book at you. Maximum everything.
But if he has an M5 and regularly v-maxes it on the Autobahn on the way to his villa in the Alps for a skiing trip, he will give you the minimum and ask you what stage tune you've got.
The law should not be open to personal opinion.
Too many people have done maximum time for growing a bit of herb because they like to relax of an evening, instead of getting smashed to bits off Stella on a Friday night and having a punch up and spending a night in the cells, but the judge hates weed because someone he knew OD'd on heroin and drugs are drugs as far as he's concerned so sends them down for 7 years and the poor punter with no prior ends up sharing a cell with a hardcore albanian drug baron.

The replies tell me people don't really understand that driving a road car on public roads is completely different from driving a professionally prepped (to within an inch of its life) racetrack car...
Even if they've done all of that and the driver is a pro, they still can crash. At least on a circuit, the other drivers signed up for the risk.
Street racing fans are seeing it as fun, but you wait until someone gets hit by a car and you see someone you care about trapped with a structural part of the car through their body. Or their car is wrapped around a tree and you realise that person is never getting to see their friends or family again.
All I read in those comments supporting this, is inexperience, too young to fully comprehend what is happening on a deepr level. They see it going well and assume that's the only possible outcome. You've not lived long enough to see life destroyed by idiots.
And before I get attacked for not understand, yes, I have seen people killed racing on track and off it. Skill has fuck all to do with it in those moments. You can't predict what other people will do around you. It takes one person on the road making a different decision from yours to kill you or them or someone else entirely.
Nothing cool about risking everyone else for your entertainment. And seeing someone lifeless just because someone was having fun is just disturbing.

If a law is there to punish citizens unfair, they can always dismiss it.
