- Post recording edit: I drove from Loveland to Denver and saw some pretty impressive fuel economy numbers at 75 to 80 mph. well I did this test at 70 I might need to redo it at interstate speeds. now back to the original commentary below...
I have wanted to do as pure of a highway test as I could, in the most ideal conditions possible. I did some research and found Highway 14 between Ault, CO and the turn to Keota, CO only gained and dropped a max (at one time) elevation of 200 feet. Now the total net gain/loss was 1000 feet over the whole trip, but by our standards here, that is FLAT!
I only had to pass 1 vehicle each direction during this test, so it's as accurate as I could make it for the almost 80 mile highway speed test.
I tried to mimic The Fast Lane Truck on their MPG testing, filling up until the click, waiting 30 seconds, and then "topping off" one more click.
Ironically the drive back to my house from Ault ended up netting me over 16 MPG, that will drop rapidly as I drive around town now.
Coming up in January I have a weekend job to install in Custer, SD and that 5 hour road trip will be a great highway test as well with varying terrain. Will probably put those results on instagram.
Drove on a business trip from ABQ, NM to St George, UT last year. Friend drove his '19 PW w/ 35" KO2s. Roughly 1000 miles r/t. He averaged 17 mpg.
I have a trip to south Dakota coming up next month some time, 5 hours solid. Will be a great highway test for me.
Much elevation change? How were comfort levels?
@@rkalla Albuquerque sits at 5,312 ft of elevation. Drive thru Flagstaff, AZ (6,909 ft) and head north. St George sits at 2,700 ft. Friend's PW has nice comfy leather seats, plus the 6.4L gives plenty of power.
17 mpg my @$$. I have a 2020 and I average 12 mpg.
@@joshuaweichert9822 17+ is very possible on the highway. Friend of mine does 17-19 all the time.
My next truck will be a pw. I'd like to build a tradesman pw. I would imagine that would get slightly better mpg with the lighter weight. Great video!
Certainly gotta help!
You know your doing it right when the local new's outlet want's a piece! Good job dude!
Hell yes
Saw that too. Nice work!
that was unsolicited too!
Noticed similar results up here in Douglas Wyoming . For fun , get her down in altitude to less than 2k feet and watch what happens . I did a run on the "lowlands" and was getting 17 ish the whole time. I get damn near 14.5 up here in Wyoming on stock tires. Love the vids, keep them coming!!
Ault sure has changed in 30 years!! LOL. Good video, thanks.
I can't believe you have a Sinclair station! Been a while since I've seen one of those. Nice vid Justin.
I guess there must be something wrong with my 2021 Power Wagon because it's just now at 10000 miles still bone stock and I have yet to see anything higher than 13.5 mpg and that's when it's empty...granted I defeat the ECO mode because I don't want to shorten the life of the engine but I know alot of people that do the same thing.
Just climbing hills with the cruise control the current mpg number drops to between 3 to 5 until on flat land again!!!
Hey Justin. I have a Tazer for my 19 PW too. Was it hard to install? Tools or video on panels you had to take off to install it? Thanks man. Dig your channel.
don't have to take any panels off, but just make sure you plug the canbus t-tap into the right port. i had mine in the wrong one and it was very unhappy with me over it.
So you're moving to Custer, SD.... No more videos with Colorado 4x4 Rescue & Recovery team??
No, I have a road trip to there.
@@JustinKingOffroad I hope you may find and join a similar team there, and continue with that kind of videos.
@@enriquemorenodevega6610 I'm not moving! Have no idea where you got that idea. I have work there in a month.
@@JustinKingOffroad Sorry, I got you wrong and I thought you were going to live there for a long time.
Great video thank you!
I have 1100 miles on mine, mostly city. I’m averaging 10.8mpg on the truck display😳. Love driving it though. Maybe I’ll do an actual test sometime.
yeah these drink fuel around town. i was seeing 18-20 cruising I25 at 80 MPH yesterday. that's why I think a re-do might be in order.
I put 15k miles on mine in the last month and 14mpg at 70mph was tough to come by. Usually meant a tail wind. The cold is the problem right now for us and winter fuel causes a big drop.
Pretty GOOD gas mileage for the power wagon for the distance you travelled with next to little wind condition!
A suggestion.Consider another video travelling the same distance with clear skies but this time with higher wind conditions for gas mileage comparison.
Have you noticed any significant change in gas mileage since you installed you new cold air intake system?
My over all opinion on gas mileage EXCELLENT for the POWER WAGON even when converted to metric where i live in Canada!!!
so on my run to denver i noticed something VERY interesting. hills that the truck would drop into 6th on it was staying in 7th and 8th with that cold air intake. as it would start to lug going uphill you'd hear a deeper growl come from the engine bay. it's absolutely making a difference. the real tell will be in 5000 miles when I pull the filter off, if there is ANY dirt in the intake tube at all, i'll be yanking that off STAT. my intake tube was completely clean with the factory airbox on it at basically 13,000 miles with standard air filters.
Depending on how I drive in a week. I Average 13.5 to 14.5 in my 2020 Power Wagon.. This past week on a Trip from FL to TN, 1476 miles round trip, I got 14.9
I filled up and got 13.4 this tank
@@JustinKingOffroad I am stuck in the 11 area. Did the air intake make that much of a difference?
@@extspence it did but only by .5 ish mpg. It removes the deep bend in the oem one and forces the air right into the filter. In the summer running with the side door off pulls in too hot of air too.
I've heard from a couple of fellow PW pilots that using ethanol free gasoline will give you a couple of mpg extra. Has anyone actually tested this theory? If not I guess I'll have to.
When I had my power wagon I would see a two to three mile per gallon increase on ethanol-free gas!
I got 16.2mpg (verified by math at the pump) from Monument to Moab on 37s with a crap load of recovery stuff in the bed. No chin spoiler.
impressive
@@cbsrf865 Thanks -a LOT better than what I get in town. 99% of my city driving is all within a 3 mile radius. It's usually around 10-11 mpg then lol
i have noticed on the highway these do substantially better than in town. a lot of weight to get moving every stoplight lol!
I assume this was after the cold air intake, any noticeable difference in mileage before the intake and is it still running smoother?
so during this MPG test i had the side door on the air intake, which basically was keeping me closer to the stock air box performance. after this video i removed the side door and there was a noticeable improvement. on the highway now hills that dropped me into 6th gear seem to have me holding 7th more, and you'll hear a deeper growl as it sucks in more air with lower RPMs. cold starts the noise level didn't change which is nice, my exhaust is already loud. but man, now when you floor it to pass someone on the highway, it crackles and screams with the best of them haha!
Just had 2nd F******* dealer sell a truck out from under me. I'm done, ordering one tomorrow. Btw...heard these motors like premium?
geez really? that's crappy of a dealer. they do get better fuel economy on premium however, in my testing the cost per mile does not make up the difference, it's cheaper to run lower grade fuel. 12.5 vs 13.1 in the city 87/91. you don't make your money back with 91.
@@JustinKingOffroad thanks bud. Yes, very crappy of them. 1st one here in Charleston SC, the next one today in Leesburg VA. Guess I'll order one. Problem is you're only guaranteed what the dealer offers in terms of discounts. Can't predict whats available for $$$ in March from the manufacturer when it gets here. We shall see😁
What module did you use to recalibrate for the 35 inch tires
i did it a couple of ways, 1st i used the zautomotive tazer for the rams, and then after i needed to take that off for a bit i used alpha OBD (which that is a permanent mod to the computer)
Curious if your truck’s front end lurches side to side a little when you hit dips and bumps in the road ?
I think you're talking about bump steer. I do not notice any unexpected movement like that, but I also haven't messed with suspension geometry.
@@JustinKingOffroad yes very much like bump steer. Truck is new so never mess with. Bump steer isn’t common with straight axles unless something is loose or worn, really strange to have that on a new truck. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
Interesting, I did notice more movement then my f150 I traded in, which is expected in a solid front axle vehicle, but nothing like my previous modded Jeep which has horrible bump steer. Alignment might be off a bit on the new one. But that would be weird it it was.
Devil's Advocate: I imagine that when they mesured that sign for 35 miles to Ault that they went to just outside the city limits, not Sinclair. Though, you are right; I find that those signs are merely suggestions. 😉
Is everyone using 87 or higher?
Oh yeah 85 they run like crap
@@JustinKingOffroad 87 is low grade where I live. That’s why I’ve been sticking to mid grade 89. But I see a lot of people running 87 and don’t hear too many horror stories about it
19 diesel gets 21 city easily
yeah the oil burners certainly do much better than the gassers
still my 40t Eu truck gets 12 mpg(city no hills), and i am pining it every time. your fuel is way to cheap!
