  • Today I review my Ram 2500's 6.4 Hemi engine and talk about why it is a good, strong reliable heavy duty engine. I mainly compare this engine to the 5.7 hemi and explain why it is a much stronger built engine. The 5.7 hemi is a great engine but the 6.4 hemi is built for towing heavy loads and built for durability in high load situations. I explain all the major differences between both the 6.4 hemi and the 5.7 hemi

Hello everyone! I'v been wanting to make this video for a while because I think it's interesting how they built the 6.4 in comparison to the 5.7 hemi. I was guilty at first thinking they were basically the same engine just one bigger and one smaller. but it turns out the 6.4 is built stronger resulting in many changes from the 5.7 hemi to the 6.4 hemi.
    1. exhaust manifold leak (sounds like the hemi tick).
    - The 6.4 has reinforced stainless steam exhaust manifold studs and gaskets basically eliminating the possible of an exhaust manifold leak happening which is a huge bonus!
    2. cooling
    - the 6.4 was completely redesigned with better cooling systems including a high flow oil cooler, piston oil jets and sodium filled exhaust valves. all of which make a big difference when the 6.e hemi engine is under load and towing.
    3. forged crankshaft and thicker engine block
    - this makes this engine very strong and can allow drivers to abuse the engine much more then the 5.7.
    4. hellcat Heads
    - the Heads on this 6.4 are basically the same as the hellcat. meaning that these heads provide lots of power but can stand extreme pressures and heat. perfect for towing situations. this is also why they say the truck version of the 6.4 is better for boost applications
These are the main reason why I think that the 6.4 is a much stronger engine then the 5.7. the 5.7 is still an awesome engine and it is a perfect engine for the ram 1500 trucks. but the 6.4 is much better suited for someone who is looking to work their truck hard day in and day out!

Great video! I’ve owned two 6.4s, both work trucks, and both over 200,000 miles with no problems. Regular maintenance is the key.

I have a 22 Ram 2500 6.4 with the 3.73 rear axle.....and I average running empty in the 16-18 mpg range. That is pretty good for a heavy truck. I pull a 35 foot 5th wheel (approx 10 1/2 k pounds) and when pulling I get 10-12 mpg. Not bad! Does goods in the hills, good off the line and just overall a great truck! Plus, it just looks so much better than the Fords and GM huge grilled boxy monsters!

What about the EGR system on the 6.4 HEMI? will that cause issues? I know it has a cooler. Mabe compare the 6.4 to to ford 7.3?

Just to be clear, a person chooses a Ram because it is superior to GM's largest gas towing engine truck and Ford's? Or, is the Ram priced lower and even though it's lower it's better? Or, good enough for the savings? - i know that all 3 brands are terrible and I've owned all three. I still own a multitude of trucks, vans, tractor trailers, tractors, heavy equipment, motorcycles of all brands. The worse luck I've ever had was Dodge/Ram/Fiat/Crysler/Plymouth/Jeep. There was always a redeeming thing that made me choose a mopar...1: cheaper or 2: cummins diesel or 3: Jeep (no other choice in that design). I notice many people try to say..."shhh...it's a secret....the Ram is better...but no one knows and they buy Ford or Chevy". I don't know if it's a secret as even family and friends I know who have purchased mopar start making excuses like.."well..I liked the engine but the tranny wouldn't stay in it"...or..."the cummins is badass but the truck fell apart". All I hear is how the 5.7 and 6.4 has cam, lifter, valve train issues MORE than the other brands. Yes, the other brands have that problem too. But, based on statistics and sales....wouldn't the larger 2 other brands show more issues based in percentage in market? In the end...I know the new tundra is having issues. But prior to design change...isn't the tundra winning in the reliability department? The chicken tax prevents Toyota from offering heavy duty trucks. I sure wish they would. Sick of all three domestic brands. They all suck. I just have problems trusting ram. The costs of ew trucks..Ram is one hell of a chance to take. I did drive a Ram 6.4 the other day and it DID impress me for what it was. I can't compare. I am not buying new trucks. Holding back. Waiting for better times

Actually the 5.7 now calls for 0w-20; but guys in the know are running Redline 5w-30 which is almost as thick as a 40 weight. The thinner oil is due to fuel economy, but who care about that. And the 5.7 hemi was acutally used in the 2500's for years, so while it's obvious the 6.4 is much stronger I wouldn't worry about the 5.7 being weak as it's literally the only half ton engine that saw duty in a 3/4 ton for years; proof that even it can take abuse and keep going.

Great video as usual man I sure appreciate sharing all that knowledge,, I fell in love with my Olive Green 20’ Power Wagon before I knew how “Heavy Duty” she really was. I’m a huge fan of the Power Wagon, it’s been a fun truck and drives like a trophy truck!! This video like most was very educational man and I sure do appreciate you taking the time. Keep ‘em coming and enjoy that awesome truck you have there!! My 6.4 purrrrrrrs like a kitten and in the Power Wagon I can’t feel it running at idle. Runs smooth and shifts out even smoother, love this truck!

Greatful for having found this channel, it's good to see that someone is looking and bringing more information about this motor out to others. It's quite helpful when doing research on what your wanting and should look for in a truck

It's just great that you cover the technical nuances! I live in another country across the ocean, and we do not have dealers for these cars, but enthusiasts who are in love with these cars bring them to themselves. I also dream of PW. And I am very interested in studying the technical details, and will stop at the most reliable option, because it is difficult to maintain - it takes a long time to wait for a spare part, there are no mechanics who know this technique well! Thank you so much!

Very interesting and informative video. I learned quite a bit. I have nothing but good things to say about my 6.4 hemi. It does everything I ask it to with ease. Like you said, the trans and oil temps stay right where they should. My 1500 ran hot, about 40 degrees hotter in some instances. So far I’m very pleased.

Very informative video. I have a ram 2500 with a 5.7. And yes, 2 exhaust studs broke off in the same port. That ticking drives me nuts!! I’m getting ready to fix it with a 6.4 2500. Thanks again!!

My experience is that both engines are great...I never had an issue, but for me. I preferred the 5.7 as it just seemed smoother, and I liked the power band....I currently own a 2022 Power Wagon with a 6.4 and I really like it..I do miss some things about my 2019 1500 Limited......
