  • Blood vessels are a dynamically regulated organ that controls the circulation of blood around the body. They constrict and dilate to ensure blood always flows to where it is needed and to control blood pressure. Smooth muscle cells in the vessel wall are key regulators of blood vessel diameter, contracting to produce vasoconstriction and relaxing to cause dilation.
This video explains the molecular mechanisms by which smooth muscle contracts and relaxes and how it responds to an electrical or pharmacological stimulus.
