  • This is a review for Oxygen Not Included. It is a colony management sim, with a quirky style. It's an incredibly complex game but it's a lot of fun.
The video includes a little bit of Oxygen Not Included gameplay.

Fun Fact: humans actually eat 2000 Kilocalories a day too - the capital C in Calories stands for kilocalorie, while lower case c is a normal calorie. Nutrition labels just want you to feel like your consuming less. Consuming 2000000 calories a day sounds really bad on paper…

  • @Human5hield
    @Human5hield Před rokem +14

Thanks for the review! FYI, 1 kilocalorie = 1 Calorie. The capital C indicates a dietary calorie as opposed to a calorie used to measure chemical energy. So the daily suggested intake of 2000 Calories, is the same as 2000 kilocalories (some countries use this unit on their food packaging). The dupes eat 1000 kilocalories, about half what an average human might, which generally matches their size.

I have just shy of 80 hours in this game and I have had it since launch.
I feel like after watching your review I never gave the game a fair shake. Time to try again.

A petroleum boiler is a water positive process. The petroleum generators then produce more polluted water than was required to extract the oil that way when the petroleum is used. When you add in the natural gas from the oil wells and if you use the CO2 to ranch molten slicksters, you end up with more petroleum, power, water, and meat than you know what to do with. If you go all the way to a sour gas boiler, the yields get even more absurd.
I didn't think much of this game at first, I had a nice little colony set up, I thought I was recycling all of my materials properly and... I ran out of water. Then I ran out of dirt. And algae. Then things got warm enough that all of my mealwood stopped growing. 2600 hours later, I feel like I've effectively mastered the game, but I still come up with new ideas for how to build things. I only load up the game now when new content is released. This is the best physics game ever created. It looks like a cartoonish colony sim, but all the things that can go comically wrong is what keeps it so compelling.

Great review. And such a wonderful game! I really love it, there is nothing that I don´t like about it.
But I´m just not smart enough to play it beyond the starting-middle point. So much I don´t understand and sure, I can go and find a tutorial and parrot it but somehow I always give up after making a royal mess of things.
Wish it wasn´t so, this is one of very few games I would say is a 10/10 but due to my own limitations means I dream of playing it well but just can´t ;)
Thanks for the review, nicely done :)

Thanks for the comment. Yeah ONI is a tough nut to crack. I think it took me like 5 playthroughs before I could get a sustainable colony going. It's deceptively complicated! Every time you feel like you hit a speed bump that you can't recover from, start again and try prepare for it in the next playthrough.

  • @dubstepgs9784

What is really the end the game in ONI?
Finding ways to make basic resources that you use first and making them renewable.
Like for example having a water geyser, and feeding it into a carbon skimmer into a carbon dioxide vent room, converting it constantly into polluted water and then use geothermal energy like Volcanoes or Magma from the core to evaporate it into Steam to make power with Steam Turbines while also seperating it and creating Dirt or if you go hotter, then Sand.
The more successful renewable cycles like that you create, the more stable the end game,to then feed the Dirt into Sage Hatches and make endless Coal while also making some Meat for BBQ or store that polluted water somehwere and make a Puft farm in it and let it offgas so then have them use the polluted oxygen to create slime that you can then make into Algae while also making back some of that Polluted Water in the process.
Seemingly endless potential to have fun with.
Failing to archive something in game and messing up never felt more rewarding to improve on,it's just an absolute phenomenal game that I always enjoy playing.

    • @admiraltygaming3756
      @admiraltygaming3756  Před rokem +1

I'd consider the late game cycles 400+. That usually means you've overcome all the early problems and shortages. Yeah the endgame renewable loops get pretty insane. Messing up and learning from your mistakes is so fun in ONI.

@@admiraltygaming3756 ah man, cycle 400 is still early-mid game to me :)
I am currently at cycle 1600, and i consider i am entering the late game.
But i'm not super speedrunny though.
I have my petroleum boiler, my volcano tamers, thus i am entering late game.
      Next phase is space materials.
After more than 1500 hours of ONI, i still don't know many stuff about the game. And i never finished it once :)
      Great game indeed.

You should check out Rimworld if you’re into colony building, especially with the new update and DLC around the corner

  • @newtybot

I played this game expecting a Rimworld but vertical experience. Something like “watch these idiots get mauled by a bear as they eat beans all day” kinda thing.
Was not expecting how in-depth it got. Wasn’t ready to find out people could get sick cus they poop too much. Wasn’t ready for the long hours of watching absolutely nothing happen. Wasn’t ready for my colony to be flooded with pee because my plumbing broke. Wasn’t ready to basically read through excel sheets. Very interesting game, it’s more of a machine than a game.

@@admiraltygaming3756 so much more than any other colony simulator I’ve played, too. You kinda EXPECT a group of raiders to blow up your wall, letting manhunting cheetahs into your colony that maul your peeps during their Friday night ritual of Suicidistic Knife Fight.
You DONT expect that that 1 milligram of poop stench to find it’s way into your ventilation system to spray directly into your head researcher, giving him polio

Petrol boiler... most things you can make with buildings put in by the devs. Those tho often have a cost, like petrol refinery converts useless crude oil into petrol which can be used as energy source but at a 50% loss. Petrol boiler does this conversion but losslessly. At high temperature crude oil transitions into petrol so you utilize this fact in a very controlled manner. So you "boil" crude oil into petrol since you heat it up to a temp which the game considers a flash point.

@@admiraltygaming3756 definitely try a petroleum boiler. They are not that hard to make, and not only they produce twice as much petroleum as the refinery, but they don't require dupe labor, so are fully automatic. They would keep working on your abandonned petroleum and plastic asteroid. Also, they are extremely energy efficient, and if you burn them in in the petroleum generator, you generate more water than you use, thus this is an infinitely sustaining process. If needs be you can also infinitely generate the sand to sieve the pwater to water

Adult male eats 2000kcal per day so 30kg duplicant eating 1000kcal per day seems reasonable. Kinda audience for this game are leaned towards more scientific type I think. That's why we know stuff.
