I think Ecuador is a great place to live in đ
Cuenca is the best City to live and the most beautiful.
Cuenca looks absolutely beautiful. What would be your #1 favorite thing about Cuenca?
I agree
I agree, I was born there.
AGREED been here 2 years and loving it

As an expat resident of Ecuador, I question whether you have ever been here. You included a picture of a beach in your Quito montage (Quito is in the mountains.). In the Cuenca montage, you had a picture of Cuenca, Spain. "Montanita started as a hippy place"... Montanita is still a "hippy place". It is largely a location for backpackers, surfers and partiers. It is a 3 hour drive to Guayaquil for major shopping, hospitals, doctors, etc. (However, if is easy-to-buy weed is at the top of the list, then Montanita is the place to go.)
Thanks for your feedback I'm always learning and looking for opportunities around the world. Ecuador looks beautiful. I have not lived in there and am currently researching multiple countries. I have lived out of country and want to expose others to the idea that there are other places in the world you can retire to and have a healthier happier life. Definitely this video is not the end all for folks to research a country but hopefully it spurs a sense of inquiry. Eventually, I would love to interview expats and share their firsthand experiences others.
This is just a low-budget promo piece...a potential warning that the kind of people who respond to cutesy slease marketing (the dog, the "bride") could be your neighbors.
I noticed that too
@Victoria Lord Hello Victoria. You are not rude or intrusive at all. Feel free to ask anything. We live in a penthouse apartment (champagne living on a beer budget) in Cuenca (about 2400 m). Previously, we were never interested in living in the mountains, but we have adapted. Someday, we might move to the coast, as we too love the beach (but we've made a lot of friends here. We are not social butterflies by any means but we do go out with groups for lunch, dinner, etc.) We are co-directors of Cuenca Soup Kitchen, a secular volunteer organization that raises money to supply food to people in need. (Just some background info.) Everything you seek is available here. Of course (as seems to be a fairly global approach, Ecuador has placed its beaches on the coast, so if you want to get your ankles wet and sandy you'll have to live there. The beaches aren't monolithic and vary in quality and to some extent weather. The crime rate is lower in Cuenca than in other parts of the country and there is excellent healthcare readily available. There are various ways to look for housing. I can answer your questions in greater depth and provide reliable contacts for obtaining residency (you have to be a bit careful with this, as fees for service vary greatly) if you contact me via the email address at Cuencasoupkitchen.org.
Which city is the best overall for hospitals, nice areas to live and stores to shop?
Ecuador đȘđš mi lindo paĂs
I know many Americans who have moved to Ecuador and no one I know is âliving like a king or a queen.â They are living in, what would be considered in the US, modest conditions. Most donât have maids, a dishwasher (machine) and donât travel a lot because money is tight and watch their money. Additionally, itâs not âfractionâ of the cost of living in the US. Itâs cheaper by fractions but not as cheap as you try to make it sound. This may bring people to your site (good for you) but people need to know the reality- not clickbait.
thanks for your feedback
I don't know where you got that info. We live in Manta, right on the beach, and our lifestyle is wonderful! We have a maid, go out to dinner whenever we want, etc. and our cost of living is easily 1/3 what we were paying in the States.
There arenât really that many strays here in Cuenca. Many you do see actually have a home and are just out roaming for the day. The expats here have started some shelters as well. Iâve been living here a month and love it. Great video.
That's great thank you for your insight. I appreciate it
Totally agree
The difference of one hour is just for six months only and the other six months are the same time with Eastern US. Great video!
Thanks and that's a very good point
Thanks for this information âčïž
In Quito, forgot to mentioned the new Metro train system which will alleviate traffic. It will be in function for the public in March 2021.
Great information thanks for sharing
it's still not functioning as of Feb 2022. Quito has no money to operate it
It's October 2022 and the Metro train system still isn't running yet. đ
Hi! Im ecuadorian, great video Im glad people are sharing interest in living here. The cities with most expats here are Cuenca, Quito and Guayaquil but Manta is also a recent option expats are considering moving in.
Thanks, Jorge I think your country is beautiful and appreciate your feedback
I dream of moving to ecuador everyday!
@@phoenix405 you are welcome anytime
cuenca is a much quieter city but that if i think you are confused cuenca is the number 1 city in medicine in ecuador for a long time there are more people from quito and guayaquil come to cuenca because here all the doctors or most of them do specialties in the usa chile spain mexico brazil argentina or germany had the best quality throughout ecuador, that is because cuenca is the only city in ecuador that there is almost no poverty and people have more money of the rest of the country and the richest families in ecuador are from ecuador are from cuenca, so they own the largest companies in ecuador!
thats not my only opnion i think all in person you talk in ecuador are going to say thats the true
good to know thanks
THANKS for sharing GREAT information..
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
Ecuador has a one-hour difference from Eastern Daylight Time, but no difference from Eastern Standard Time. Most of the United States was using Daylight Saving Time when you recorded this back in September, which is probably the source of the confusion. Ecuador doesn't change its clocks in the spring and fall like the U.S. does.
Makes sense that whole daylight savings time is a bit silly. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
@@Time2Downsize Silly everywhere, but extra silly at the equator
For health care, from Montañita you can go to Guayaquil, 2 hours away, and the biggest city in Ecuador, you do not need to go back to Cuenca.
There is also good health care in La Libertad or Salinas, one hour away.
That's great info thank you.
Your video is good, i just found you need to get some more accurate info like the fact this person mentioned there are closer health options to Montañita. We are in the Easter time zone, so time will be different only part of the year, and very important, when your showing the video of Quito one shot shows a beach. Quito is in the Andes.
In general your video is good and informative, you might want to correct a few details
Thank you for promoting our country!
@@xavier45535 I appreciate the feedback trying to weed through all the information on different countries can be challenging but my goal is to keep improving on each video. Also, if you have any cool insight you want to add in comments that would be great. Thanks again

That's excellent I'm very envious If you take a notion and want to share your experience let me know would love to hear about it.
The first photo of Cuenca by the cliff is misleading, most likely that photo was taken from Cuenca, Spain.
Yes excellent information .
Thank you I appreciate you watching
I really enjoyed your video.im retired and might decide to live in Cuenca after the pandemic.
Thank you for watching!
Yes. Plenty reasons to move to đȘđš quality of life..economic better health care. Cost if LIVING etc...

There two cuencas: one in Spain and Ecuador.
Hey how do you know that? I thought I was the only one who knew thatđđ

Nice video
Salinas is the best beach in Ecuador and the safest.
Looking forward to checking it out. Thanks for your tip
The Centro of Salinas is very loud . The Ecuadorians sit on the beach all night and party. La Liberated is ok . But you do have to speak Spanish.
@@evelinholmes6401 Great insight thank you
Not many roaming dogs in the city center. Lots of toy breeds in Cuenca.
You don't know Ecuador, Guayaquil is 3 hours from Montañita sometimes less. Guayaquil is over 3 million people big hospitals
Thanks Fernando I'm always learning and appreciate your insight
bring your own oxygen tank OR perpetual fan - depending on altitude.
What little we saw of Guayaquil we loved, but it was way too hot and humid for me.
LOL. that sounds pretty much familiar to me (the perpetual fan) lol! Guayaquil is my hometown
@@amywalker7515 It's hotter than hell. I prefer Playas or surrounding areas. It's a lot better
The jobs that are the big question
Quito and Cuenca is beautiful, but not for everybody, because of high elevation , cold and rainy. Very high elevation can bring big problems to your health.
That's a very good point thanks for sharing
That is just at the beginning after 1 month they could adapt to the altitud. Cold no so much as the Us. I would say it's similar to the US Spring Season.
@@asdrubalvivanco2301 A few times I passed out on the streets of Cuenca from luck of oxygen and it was a scariest thing I ever experienced in my life. After that I was afraid to walk fast on the streets. Also I was unable to sleep at night and had a tinges in my legs. All together is very disturbing.
I felt much better visiting Loja.
Montañita is not so far from Guayaquil (which is a large coastal city). There is no need to go to Cuenca for medical care, as Guayaquil is much closer.
That's great thank you
Great quality!
Well done đđŒ
Thank you for watching and I really do appreciate the feedback.
Could you please do a video on Argentina?
I want the simple life peace of mind maybee a beach a couple museums good food . The way it should be equador closer to gods plan than we have in New York . Constant worry here

Sorry you didnt enjoy it. I love the positive comments have a great Christmas
Olon?
Rent in Quito seems extremely high. And do we need to mention that Quito is at 11,600 feet in altitude? This is significant for most due to altitude sickness. I got altitude sickness in Cuenca, which is at 8,400 feet. Some people can overcome it, but others can't. So imagine walking anything faster than a slow stroll or ascending more than 2 stairs and getting sharp chest pains like you're having a heart attack. Some people die of altitude sickness. I"d sure hate for people to sell everything and end up in a place which could be harmful to your health.
Good insight especially on the altitude thanks for your input
Could care less about 'dogs' - the weather & being comfortable is most important ! --?--
Just so it's clear, Quito is not on the ocean, as a few photos may have led one to believe. Your numbers are pretty good; we're actually beating those numbers in rent and utilities by 15%. To see actual apartments for rent check out Plusvalia.com. I have no connection to them, we just used it to locate our place. For apartments, Price, quality and general security all go hand in hand. Cuenca, your mountain city, as actually 1,200 ft lower than Quito.
That's Awesome!!!
Man...you are showing inages of GUAYAQUIL and beaches...Quito is at the mountains of los Andes...I'm not sure you're so aure of what you are talking about.
You should live in Ecuador before you make videos of it and try to tell people that they can live here on the cheap.. Ecuador prices have risen sharply and many things are double the price of US goods because of the Import taxes.. Apartments and houses range from 250 to 2000 a month.. You cannot bring your car to Ecuador as an Expat.. If you dont speak at least basic spanish and continue to learn you will not be able to experience this country but you will be stuck in Gringolandia
I appreciate you watching and your feedback. As for learning the language I agree you should always try and learn the language of your host country. As for cost of living though prices have risen the overall cost is still less than most of the US. As for living in every country I'm researching prior to making a video on it I would have to disagree. When I taught subjects like history, geography, etc in the public school system I didn't have first hand experience of topics like the revolutionary war, the Persian empire, etc either. Would someone like yourself have a better insight into living in Ecuador. Absolutely. Would your experience be the same as another expats? Probably not. These videos are based on my own research and desire to find the next location for my family and I. The intention is to share what I have found and possibly inspire others to look at options that might provide themselves a happier life. Once again thank you for watching and any insight you can provide to your personal experience of living in Ecuador would be greatly appreciated.
I agree with you this guy doesn't what fff his talking about Ecuador .... Why would i stay in Montanita to see every day people smoking weed and party all night ??????
I agree with in gringolandia đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł

Whyâd you stop your channel?
Thank you for all of your comments. If you have any tips or insights for folks looking to move to Ecuador please jot them down in the comments. I think it's great that people are realizing that there are many great countries out there.
That's a great tip thanks for sharing
Has anyone been to Ambato, Ecuador? Itâs a fairly large city, in the mountains. It looks like it has a lower cost of living than Cuenca! If you have been there please comment on this city, whether you like it or not? Proâs and conâs. đâđ»
Where's a good place for young people to live in Ecuador?
I would think living near the capital would give you more access to a vibrant nightlife and more opportunities. Being older I really didn't look at that as much when I was researching the country. Best of luck on your journey and I hope you find a place where you can be happy and thrive.
@@Time2Downsize thank you
How can i get lower
Man did you miss the boat.. Not everyone wants to live in a big city. There are so many other beautiful places in Ecuador to live. You need to dive deeper. There are hidden gems, smaller cities and quaint towns that in my opinion are way better than the major cities you mentioned.
Geoff Carter
Dude, when you are talking about Quito you had pictures of other cities, for instance one of a beach (Quito is in the Andes) and another from Guayaquil. Please fix that!
And for Cuenca you put a picture of Cuenca, Spain.
Hou s lieving in Tovalo?
from city to city you didn't compare cost equally! one place you worked in gym cost and some other examples that were not apple to apples!
Thanks Gary for letting me know. My goal is to make every video a little better.
Hello I am ecuadorian, I recomended you Cumbaya, Cuenca and Manta, in Cumbaya live the most rich people of Quito because your climate is template (Quito is very cold) and Manta is the retired place to ecuadorians, it is beautiful and good climate
Thank you for the recommendations very helpful. Have a great day
How is the weather in those 3 cities?
Great question, my understanding is Ecuador has a wide variety of weather. Down by the ocean or the rainforest it can get quite hot. However, as you move up in altitude you get a more mild climate to down right chilly. So if you plan on visiting prepare to dress in layers. Have a great day and I really do appreciate you watching.
Quito and Cuenca are cold and rainy in the winter, but cool the rest of the year with cold nights. Quito is at 9500 feet of elevation and Cuenca is at 8500 feet.
Montañita is cool and cloudy from June to November and warm from December to May, but never hot. Remember that being on the ecuator, the sun burns.
@@carlosaldas5690 That's a great point on the sun. It's my understanding that even on an overcast day you can get burnt fairly easily. Has that been your experience?
Quito and Cuenca are in the mountains -- thus, both have that 'eternal spring' climate (with cold and rainy days too). If you like that type of weather all year around, it's perfect. The coast in Ecuador benefits from a cold current, giving it a cool/grey and a somewhat warmer season. In all of Ecuador, the length of the day/night is almost the same year around (12 hours).
@@boink800 Great insight thanks so much!!!
This guy is a huckster. He has a photo of a beach in his Quito section (it's at 9,000 feet in the mountains) and a photo of Cuenca, Spain (not Ecuador) in his Cuenca section and says "we're going up into the mountains' but it's lower than Quito by about 600 feet. He has no idea what he's talking about and since he's using all stock photos, probably never been to Ecuador. Do your own research and seek videos from people who live here, there are many. What's disturbing is that errors ware pointed out and he didn't bother to change anything. I've never heard anyone call the mercado's a "farmer's market." His prices for Cuenca are way off, "public transportation, $50 a month" ... the bus here is 30 cents a ride for those under 65, 15 cents for those 6%+. At 30 cents, $50 is a helluva lot of riding around.
I want to understand why they call themselves expats and not inmigrants!? Also is not america, its United States and Canada geographically
We all in America if not Europe
Get your stats straight. You gave the population for Guayaquil. You also included a photo of Guayaquil. How well do you really know the country? You sound like a slick sounding salesman paid to say what you say. I know from where I speak. I have lived in Ecuador.
Thanks for watching any insight you can give folks who may be considering moving to Ecuador is always appreciated.
@@Time2Downsize are these folks exposing you as a fraud???...you should experience the country before you make a video on it....just saying.....
@@jose.vargas1409 Jose, sorry you didn't care for the video. Was their some mistakes in my research yep. As for being a "fraud" lol. Since I'm not selling anything I'm not sure how that would apply. Troll on my friend and have a great day.
Ecuador is far too dangerous at this moment. Expats are leaving.
you have no idea what are you talking about. very bad information. I suggest do your own reserch before moving in. Ecuador is beautiful and very cheap. But this guy have no idea what his talking.
Totally agree with you
I live in Ecuador. And this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He's obviously never been to Ecuador. Just a few of many of his misleading statements. Quito is not all that safe, especially at night. Cuenca is quite a distance from any mountains. None visible from the city. Montiñita is a small surfing party town. No amenities at all. It has a supermarket that's about it. There are many good websites that offer the truth about Ecuador. He is not one of them. Grifter! The only thing he got right is that Ecuador is a great place to live. And it is cheaper than the States or Canada.
Cuenca city is much better
I really think you do not have a clue of how life is down there your way off on your perspective on real life in Ecuador
