In this week’s woodworking build we’re making a Magic Magnetic Light. Also known as and inspired by a Heng Balance Light, these lights are controlled by a micro snap switch. I used a live edge piece of maple for the bottom and walnut for the frame. I am just Floored by how it came out. I really can’t wait to see what you create! Let me know what you’d like to see next. Thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe. Cheers!

Blurring out 4:15 well done sir, I laughed a little too hard at that
We were laughing so hard it was tough to film. I am a man child 🤦♂️
Hahaha also laughed at that and was going to comment if someone hadn’t.
That blur is not the hero we wanted but the hero we needed. Thanks for the solid laughs.
And that's we keep our shows family friendly , by using the Blur filter !
I haven't even finished the video yet because as soon as saw that blur I paused it to see if anyone else caught it...and also to confirm that I wasn't the only one with his mind in the gutter. Nice job, sir! LOL
Glad to meet another fly fishing fanatic like me. I to like Rio but switched over to Trout Hunter as they sponsor our fly fishing team which placed first last year in the Southeast. If you’re ever in NC, look me up and we will wet a line together. There are many spectacular trout streams in the NC mountains including wild rainbows, browns and brookies. BTW, love your videos as I dip my toes into woodworking.
Awesome video as always. Random tip for the LED strips:
If you want an even strip of light without the dots shining through, the neighboring LED dots should form an equilateral triangle with the diffuser / plexiglass in terms of distance. So to get the right height between the diffuser you simply calculate the following:
Distance between each LED dot * 0,5 * square root of 3.
In example of an LED strip with each dot being 1 inch apart thats: 1 * 0,5 * square root of 3 = 0.86602540378 inches.
Keep in mind that this only works with LED strips that have evenly spaced lights though.
Got that tip from an old exhibit builder, when we set up a booth at a light fair.
Darn! Now I know way more than I thought I ever would. Great comment bud!
Or use lenticular diffuser film which diffuses light in one direction, can be much closer and does not reduce light as much as regular diffuser.
Can I just compliment you (and your team?) on always having such superb editing and thorough product links in the description! Every time I watch your videos and say "Ooh, I want one of those!" and I never have to look further than the links below. Thanks for making it easy but never too much like a commercial.
That means a lot bud. We try! I'll pass it along to the guys.
Marvelous beautiful and unbelievable
The blur was great!!! Well done!!!!
Hahaha my favorite part.
Made my evening!
That is amazing. Love the switch being the hovering magnet. Thanks.
Theme and material of woodworking is infinite and inexhaustible. This magnetic light is ingenious, creative and great.
Really cool Jonathan! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Very cool looking lamp.
Well done 👏👏👏
Great idea following the spalting line - I guess every board has a natural curve to follow, whether it's that or just the grain itself. That's a nice simple way to keep organic shapes in projects without overthinking things.
Fantastic project!! Thank you for sharing!
That is so cool.
Very beautiful idea for a project and having fun while building it and I'm sure you are enjoying playing with it right now!! Take care and be safe!!
Awesome job. 👍
Just got me a router for the first time just waiting for my bit from Bits and Bits so I can start making the chairs from Jay's custom. Thanks for all the good advice.
Awesome Jonathan! I will give it a try soon.
Thanks
Thats the coolest lamp I’ve seen, love it
OMG! LMFAO @ 4:15. Johathan - you crack me up. I love your sense of humour!
Just plain cool.
This project is awesome! And that laugh of joy showing that it works, loved it! No Zero Days!
NO ZERO DAYS BABY!
Bad ass! Really cool idea.
Brilliant!!!!!
I think it would have been interesting to add some reflective surfaces to the floating blocks, and have yourself a mini disco. Great video!
Pretty kool!
This is so cool. I have got to build one. Thanks for sharing my friend.
Great idea man! I like that you did an art type of project this time. I'm a huge fan of art projects to keep me interested and keep the creativity side of my brain happy. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Fantastic
That was an excellent project! I’ve got to build one of those!
Love it man, that is innovative thinking!
Great video. Love that project
Very cool and creative! Would love to see more wood working projects that involve lighting, magnets, metal, etc.. A+ man! Keep'em coming!
Very Cool
Very nice and great idea👍
Very cool, Thanks.
Super cool. I think I must build one!
Just got my stop block, dove tail jigs, and saw. Thanks for quality products and quick shipping!
My guy!
Great idea, this is my favourite project No 1 in 2020
That's a cool little project, woodworking and electrics my two favorite things 😁
I appreciate the arrow in the thumbnail to show me exactly where the floating magnets were.
Cool!!!
Very Cool👍
This was an awesome build, Jonathan. I really enjoyed man. I like the decorative aspect of it as well as just a cool talking piece, and it lights up.
the quality of everything within this channel is some of the best i've seen
Means a lot bud. Thank you!
Nice! I really enjoy watching you make thing’s as you go. I have been woodworking for over 60 years and I see me in you as you are working. Please continue doing what you do as its entertaining and full of tips.
Best Regards
Fred Thomas in Skokie IL
Great idea
Thank you for your great content :D Love it
Way cool !
Nice & creative 👍🇺🇸
Very cool piece I may try to make this soon.
Cool!
Did Danny like the lamp?
Really cool video once again! Now to make one with dovetails
that is super cool, I'll have to try it sometime lol
Your amazingly talented God has really blessed you.
Wow that turned out awesome! Good stuff!
Thank you my friend!
Muito inteligente parabéns ótima peça
Cool little project!
Another cool idea would have been to use conductive thread and have the cubes light up as well.. little frosted acrylic cubes.
Lol...split a gut laughing at the blur!!!! So good.
I just checked the FedEx site, and my 3 CMT Orange Blades arrive tomorrow! Thank you so much for the tip on the sale and additional discount. I’ll have 3 high quality purpose specific blades for about the price of one... better results and longer life. Keep it it brother!
Thats awesome bud!
You blurring out the sanding made me laugh out loud. Made my night! Thanks JKM
Hahaha ha we had trouble filming because we are children
thank you Katz . now that we could of used in the early 70's lol
Well that's cool as heck! Haha, that's awesome. Great use of scraps!
Thanks Drew!
Great Video Jonathan! I'm a proud Suizan Saw owner.
"Brilliant"!
Thanks.
My guy!
Hey man, idk If you'll see this comment or not, but I just want to thank you for making that double stick tape video because that stuff is amazing. Love everything about it. Have been using it non stop in the shop.
My pleasure bud!
Turned out cool like the limit switch usage. I really enjoy my stop block that I ordered from you but if I had one suggestion it would be to close off the gaps that the bolts slide along in the back. I often find the bolts/knobs falling off when I'm taking the stop block off and on my fence
William Gilbert would be so proud of you!
Fantastic job, dude! It really looks beautiful! 😃
I'm going to make something like that whenever I can!!! 😂
Stay safe there! 🖖😊
I have to point out 7:26 where you took the saw to the finger during some relaxing music, that was funny. Not as funny as the blurred out part, that caught me off guard. Nicely done.
No I was just moving my finger because if you put pressure on something it'll cause the saw to bind
It was 7:28. The saw definitely gave the finger a good slap
That is a great looking finished product. "C" is for "Common" on your switch
Thank you! Drew a blank there
Coooooooooool
10:45 I smiled with you, well done
I was pretty happy about it hahaha
@@katzmosestools I have a pair of neudinium magnets with 50kg strength... I'm thinking about your light but... bigger 😁
Love this. I'm a beginner just getting into woodwork as a hobby and I love this build. I'm currently making the frame for the lamp but I am completely lost on the electronics. Do you have a video or any info on how you wired the led strip to the snap switch? Thank you.
Excellent project, I loved it and I will try to do it.
How did you connect the led strip to the microswitch?
the blur at 4:15; LMAO
I see what you did at 4:15 🤣
Great idea. I like your videos as they show the mess, the sawdust and clutter. Some other videos are way too staged! Keep it up!
Yeah man. My shop is a shit show most of the time hahaha
7:26 saw to the finger will make you poop the pants every time! Haha 😂
It just looks like I got myself. I was actually removing my finger so that the saw would not bind as I finished the cut
Cool project. What kind of fish do you fly fish for?
Very nice! And although it is probably something very common, but... What is the short bristle brush you use? Thanks for all the content!
A silicon glue brush. That one is from rockler
@@katzmosestools thanks! I get so happy when the content creator interacts and replies and even more that fast!
Everyone shows themselves wiping away the wood glue, so I have a basic question: do you purely wipe it away, or do you put something like mineral spirits/alcohol on the cloth/paper towel first and then wipe? There's always way more "wet" looking wood around glue areas when I see this in videos which is why I ask.
Just a wet (water) towel. Glue is water based so water is great
lol the blur
Hahaha yeah we talked about before we even recorded that shot. We laughed way too hard before even shooting it.
What brand of CA Glue and activator do you use?
Can you use any ol ordinary adhesive LED strip lights?
Do you find it easier to miter on a table saw opposed to a Miter saw? Really getting into woodworking as a hobby, helps with PTSD and your videos have been extremely helpful?
So much easier to build a crosscut sled for a table saw because you can really dial it in.
Hey, can you please give a link to the LED lights you used? I really want to make this. Thank you!
If you can’t go up on the rod, you can go down on it! 😎
Hahahaha
What is up with blurred filing
"C" = Common
I just blanked while we were recording. Thank you
Cathode
The blurred out part where you were filing......did you do that for the reason I THINK you did that? Funny!
looking at another comment below....I guess you did. Too funny.
Great build! Battery operated?
Just like my vibrator it takes 110v of wall power baby 😉
I cant tell if you did or not but i recommend soldering the wires on to the switch even if its low voltage
I did but I don't show that stuff because I'm terrible at it haha
Sorry I'm late. But I'm here. I appreciate this. Wife seen it. Now it's on a neverending list.
Why do you hate me?
Hahaha sorry
Love your stuff but how are you getting your hair cut at the moment? UK Barbers are in lockdown is the US different?
I do it myself
Wow. Respect! You really are a renaissonce man
needs more diffusion.
Pretty neat idea for these Times when we are “confined to quarters.” .....(One fly fisherman to another) Check out Huge Flyfisherman on CZcams. I think you’ll enjoy his videos.
I'll check him out. Thank you!
"scraps" yeah, I don't have any 6' long 8/4 walnut scraps laying around... lol
When you've been building stuff as long as I have you will. It just kind of builds up
Pleas quit calling stuff that everyone know how it works magic.
I bet you're magically fun at cocktail parties.
Yeah, I laughed at that part out loud :)
Where is the grammar Nazi?. Many things are magic sir. It's ok to not know everything in fact it's impossible
