First of all, what is preppy style or prep style? Well, as the name suggests, it was derived from prep schools in about 1910-1912. Boys from affluent households developed that style, entered prep school, and was characterized by school uniforms that were paired with certain accessories such as madras patterns and linen, bolder colors. It always had a nautical vibe to it.
By the 1940s, it had gotten more mainstream and was adapted at universities, and it became also known as "Ivy Style." Iconic brands that produce that clothing included J. Press, Brooks Brothers, and later also, Andover Shop. Other brands such as Ralph Lauren also picked up on the defining prep style elements and incorporated it into their wardrobe collections.
ANCHOR BRACELET
- A nautical anchor bracelet is something that many people assume is very preppy. Although historically, it's not something that men actually wore.
ARGYLE SWEATER
- It has basically diamonds with overplaid and contrasting colors. That kind of bold mix of colors is exactly what prep students would wear. In terms of colors, you can really choose any combination under the sun.
BARBER WAX JACKET
- has a nice patina, is aged in brown or olive green; it is also very preppy even though it's of English origin.
CLOTH BELTS
- They come either in Madras such as here, or in embroidered and woven belts that underline the casual character of a summer prep style.
BOAT SHOE
- Traditionally, they come in a dark brown with a white deck sole that is perfect for being on a boat. You can also find them in Nantucket red, green, yellow, or blue.
CABLE KNIT SWEATER
-Comes in white or ideally, off-white, probably beige and if you want to, you can also add styles like the neckline that's contrasting which you probably have seen in tennis sweaters.
CHINOS
- They come in a cotton twill fabric in khaki, beige, stone and navy. For summer, you can also go with baby blue, Nantucket red that's a mix between salmon, red, and pink or maybe even a light green.
GTH PANTS
- an embroidered chino called go to hell pants. They're so contrasting that makes suck a statement that you can't really overlook them. It's really a bold statement, but it's nevertheless very preppy.
LOAFERS
- Ideally, you should go for a penny loafer or a tassel loafer.
L.L. BEAN BOOT
- is a preppy statement, and it's just very characteristic of the region, definitely something you should invest in.
In terms of colors, Nantucket reds are really popular either in shorts or chinos, not so much in jackets, but it's a unique blend of red, salmon and pink that is loud but nevertheless, classy and prep.
NAVY BLAZER
- Often combined with oxford cloth button down shirts.
The OXFORD CLOTH BUTTON DOWN SHIRT
- A soft button down collar, has a chest pocket and overall, barrel cuffs which work well with the overall casual, relaxed style of the preppy nature.
POLO SHIRTS
- Comes in all kinds of bold colors ranging from light blue to red, green and yellow.
QUILTED JACKETS
- They come in olive, or gray, or brown tone and it's very easy to carry along but insulates at the same time.
RUGBY SHIRTS
- Bolder stripes and even numbers and a contrast collar.
SEERSUCKER
- Another fabric that is favorited by the preppy simply because it's lightweight, summery and it's very American.
BOWTIES
- In either Madras or linens or bright and bold colors.
TWEED SPORTCOATS
- invest in earthy tones and muted patterns simply because it's a very classic look that is worn at Ivy League schools and it's just an integral part of prep style.

I love the Ivy/Preppy style. I have turned Brooks Brothers my second home
into*
Magic Guild amen to that
I love the preppy/ Ivy League style!
I agree! Brook brothers is the best, but I also like Polo Ralph Lauren which also delivers that Ivy/Preppy style as well.
What are our doing since they’ve declared bankruptcy.
Official uniform of "You can't arrest me, my dad is a lawyer".
Should straight up shoot up such pricks
Ivy-prep is incredibly versatile and cost-effective. I definitely get more outfit combinations out of my capsule pieces compared to matching suits.
Having gone to prep schools for the majority of my school years, some of this is incredibly accurate, some of this isn’t. I think they key to the preppy style is looking like you put together your outfit by what doesn’t smell bad, even though it is a meticulous process.
I'm a woman and I really enjoy your videos.
Benisse Calmleth M. Famat would it make a difference if your a man or women?
@@rranee the channel is literally called the gentleman's gazette
A amazing channel that has everything you can think of and has a great classic vibe.
I’m a rube. I live in Rube Village. If YT wasn’t available, I wouldn’t have access to a lot of this information. Looking good is easy enough, refinement to my tastes isn’t. This site helps me a lot.
British preppy style exists as well, and similarly is pioneered by boys from private schools and universities like OxBridge or Durham (as a private school boy whose family has a strong country and nautical heritage, this id how I dress). It’s similar to the American preppy, but incorporates more classic fits, as well as items like Schöffel shooting gilets, Barbour jackets and Harris Tweed, polo belts (look them up, they’re a staple of British preppy), as well as trainers when in a casual setting. After a long time of being called “posh” by people, I realized the British preppy style is the one for me. Great video, very informative!
The day Ralph Lauren stopped making Polo rugbys 😢😭
171TITO yeah I miss them
Don't worry bro seems they are bringing it back slowly on there site 😁👍🏾. Be safe;-)
They are back my husband just got one from
Macy’s.
I bought one two months ago from their flagship store. They are back
Yes def they are back.
I was just reading about this and GTH pants on the GG website the other day. 2:30 Here I was coordinating a cloth belt with canvas sneaks and boat shoes because they're so casual yet go so well. Didn't' know it had prep roots. I have a feeling Raphael really liked making this video. Thanks for all the knowledge you all share.
Im 4o..I went to ohio state.. this was exactly my style then and still is.. your spot on with this video and your ivy leave one... excellent job
Absolutely one of my favorite channels on YT. And the owner was so kind enough to spend some time with me on the phone as I wrote a business school case (which my students love) about the company and channel.
Pulled off the Prep-style look 🔥
I can't believe I did it, despite it took me 3 year to figure it out.
The more we learn about it from videos like this, it becomes easier to understand and incorporate into our own style of living.
Delightful video not necessarily a preppy style gentleman but I can indeed appreciate how to incorporate some of the suggestions you offer in this video into my own wardrobe thanks
Could you do something on the mods British kids that wore Italian shoes
Phenomenal, very easy to listen to this gentleman.

I like croquet. My family played a lot of croquet when I was young. We went through two sets of the game.
I can picture some of these outfits as the perfect croquet gear.
Nice to run into somebody that knows what they're talking about. I've been dressing Preppy since the mid to late 70's, and my wardrobe, as you might guess by now, is jaw-dropping! I am easily one of the best dressed guys in Boston (BRAG!), which if you saw the guys in Boston, it's not a difficult thing to achieve! I have subscribed, and looking forward to watching your other videos.
Simon5005, I’ve been dressing preppy since the late 60. It a style that will not go out of style.
@@gunner2gunner
this is that new bold, gth preppy style. i prefer the traditional, classy look of ivy skids.
Very thorough. Thanks for sharing.
I love the way this guy talks.
I think with prep style bright colours are best
Have you done a video on "How to wear the muffler right way?"
Thanks for all these videos Sven. You are doing a great job. :)
Got into Vineyard Vines a few years ago and I'll never go back.. Great video!
Geoffrey Excellent yikes hows that working for ya
Vineyard clothing line is very popular with the cotillion crowd in the South.
What about the Aquaberry Vest?
Jack Kennedy on the Honey Fitz
awesome- thanks for the info!
Love your video !!!!!!
Vineyard vines is a great store brand for preps. Expensive but very good. I live in a very wealthy town and everyone in my school wears it.
Cole Chapman Is it more expensive than Polo Ralph Lauren?
Cole Chapman that store is the new Abercrombie. Had good intentions but turned into a kids brand. Walk into the store, its manned by teenagers.
Cole Chapman Vineyard vines is relatively cheap. Any designer brand will be around 10 times more expensive at the least.
Anyone know any good sources to purchase Ralph Lauren crest polos shirts? I've been having a hard time finding them even online. You would think the internet would have a larger selection.
Love your work!
Just so you know...I think you are a delight to watch. Love the preppy look!
Great information as always. Thank you!
Looks like I am only wearing preppy stuff hahah. Awesome video! Great work!
Great video, some of my videos focus more on making this look accessible and doing it on a budget
your subs are at 38,838 5 numbers, consisting of only two numbers. I like it.
Raphael - Du bist spitze !
Is there a guide for women?
What age does preppy stop do you think
After Prep school, then it become Ivy style which never ends.
I have gone to an Ivy league undergrad school for Design and graduate school in Neuro-philosophy and I LOVE and ADORE Ivy-league clothing!
I do own several Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Zegna, Georgio Armani cloths and I love it!
"I do owned"
Goldsmiths, University of London is an ivy league school for design.
This ain't no philosophical dissertation. I don't really care much about writing sentences with proper grammar and the right spelling even though I would try to do that when writing on CZcams comment section or Facebook status update.
Neuro-philosophy?
I bought a Nantucket reds trouser this year on ebay. Also, Sperry canvas shoes in dreamsicle orange, navy, and a cream colored pair. I found a red kaki chino from Lands End. These are interesting colors and give me more variety than my cream, navy and kaki colored chinos and ivory colored linen slacks. I like to wear a variety of different colored linen shirts in both long and short sleeves. I bought a pair of brand new white Ralph Lauren carpenter jeans. A coral colored cotton sweater I found while thrifting locally. Of course I wear cream colored knit cotton and also navy sweaters. Color is fun for me in the good old summertime. Thank you for your videos and website posts.
Ah my favorite style. Old fashioned yet not dowdy 😎👍
i love this style its so cute
Should your cable knit sweater be sized up if you're wearing a shirt underneath it?
I know this is a 3 year old post but I put in my opinion.
Sweaters are generally made and sized with the intention of the wearer layering with a shirt underneath.
With that said, buy your regular size. But be careful with some brands that offer different fits, such as "athletic" or "slim" fit.
Most traditional makers expect the customer to layer a shirt underneath their sweater, so I would buy the size you wear to avoid a baggy, untailored look.
can you do an item about the italian dandy?
At age 67, I'm an old prep, but probably closer to the original look than many. There are two looks for men: casual- "all my clothes are of great classic quality and I just grabbed something to put on." In actuality, the look is studied and balanced. Bright colors are controlled by neutrals. I.e. One of my favorites is bright green cords with a navy blazer, white button down shirt and navy/ green tie. 1953 Gucci loafers- but no designer logos. No socks. Also , try a polo shirt UNDERNEATH the dress shirt with all collars showing and no tie. Cuffs, your monogram in discrete places , small watches, ribbon belts, Burberry trench coat. Black is never worn.
Suits: natural fibers- navy blue, gray, tan. Classic 3 button style. No back packs.highly polished shoes. The preppy style is a lifestyle: how you talk, how you decorate your home, what you drink, where you summer, what you drive and the correct choice of color.
As I mentioned, I'm now age 67 and I continue to wear the same look from my school days.
Yes!!
what specific style of music in your intro. I know its classic but I dont know how I can find that sexy saxephone.
Its made for his channel
Intellectual clothes
It looks like a clothing information commercial from the 60s lol
If one is being really honest everything to do with suiting and suits is of English origin, it may be that ‘prep’ style as a terminology comes from America but most of it was truly inspired by Ivy League which essentially just copied British upper class clothing and sportswear. Conclusion prep is essentially English
This man just used the word "vibe"
What do you call that flower on your coat again?

I ❤ Fred Perry.
l love preppy style
Old styles never get old.
Hi Mr.Schneider...
Sven, what do you do as your full-time job?
Ass eating
I just got early acceptance to Stanford, and I only where this style to dinners or luncheons/parties, so I'm gonna stick out walking around in my casual clothes
None of this is relevant and your entire comment was just an extraneous attempt at bragging
I'm sure you got accepted to Stanford even though you can't use the word "where" properly
Yeah thanks but nobody cares
This was amusing. Thank you for the levity. As much as Stanford would like to assume it rules over the PAC12, it's Oregon that rules. All you have to do is watch Animal House which was filmed on campus my Freshman year.
Do I have to be white to wear these?
No.
It's recommended that you own a golf club too, so, yeah you gotta be pretty white
NO! Prep style is for all.
No, but it helps
either white or Eastern Asian/ Indian
What about Daniel Cremieux as a preppy brand?
Love prep style but wish there where more budget options
Filmayte
Same here, it's really expensive :(
Filmayte JCPenney/Macy's, Uniqlo, and H&M if you wanna get OCBDs/Polo Shirts, Chinos and maybe some shoes.
However going on ebay or finding a thrift store can work too. Go early in the morning to buy clothing so you can beat anyone who'll upsell the clothing.
Buy Linen/100% Cotton if you want to stay cool.
Filmayte prep = poor people.....not! What lower income group can afford prep school unless you're an athlete?
Filmayte Lands end is a good preppy/trad budget store
Zara actually often has a lot of preppy-influenced clothing, chinos, button downs, blazers, sweaters etc. that are cut in more modern silhouettes, too.
Merci beaucoup pour le sous titre en français 🇨🇵❤️
0:23 you can see my dorm
👍
@4:14 😂
#NantucketRed
The most intriguing clothing from this style.
Not sure if I want the pants, but the Nantucket red sports jacket that Murray's sells is very appealing.
If I ever got to Boston, Martha's Vineyards, or Chappaquiddick, I'll be sure to go to Murray's and get the sports jacket. Maybe the trousers. JFK probably wasn't wrong when it came to style.
I think you've mistaken Barbour as barber
Goal: being preppy
Obstacle: living in south america, aka constant boiling heat
It depends, I'm in SA too but my city is cold, and we don't have stations so, it's a win, lol.
I like the style but there is no place I could ever wear something like this without looking ridiculous
@04:08 "Go to hell" pants !!
On Derby Day at the races, the sports coats look like GTH pants. Crazy plaid.
Chic gaudy, if you will.
You can't list sources and not mention LL Bean!
Going into a boy only university seems like a horror to me haha
What is preppy
PREPPYS only mimicked college apparel to show they were college bond and were called colleege
this guy scares me. he looks like the man who would drive the white van around elementary schools in the 90s when I was a wee lad..
Edward Salce I would say you give off way more of that vibe
It's Barbour Wax Jacket -- Not Barber Wax Jacket
hos hairstyle makes his ears look huge
How to get beat up.
Jack Reeves L
Jack Reeves preppies are snobs
NapstablookGaming no there not well at least not true preps
Jack Reeves so true jack. Dress prep at your own risk. Lol.
You will only get beaten up for being preppy if you live in the ghetto.
Is it just me or does it kinda seem like the rebellious and non traditional look of this style is bothering him. It just seems like his hiding so much disdain behind that style. Not trying to accuse him, he just seems uncomfortable to me.
😁
Maybe when it comes to the GTH pants.
He probably wouldn't wear them.
As much as I enjoy some of Sven's videoes, he is clearly clueless on American style past 1950. Some of the brands he tote as great and the ones that are "poor" are difficult to understand. He was clearly born in the wrong era. He clearly would have gotten along well with Fred Astaire and F Scott FItzgerald more than he would have with Papa Hemmingway and Gary Cooper. Jack Reeves is right there is a difference in being well dressed and a gentleman and looking to have your lunch money taken everyday.
Colors are fine but looking like a clown isnt that nice tbh. I'd be careful.
but I really like that outfit you are wearing at 6:58
God this isn't what prep is at all,
if anything this is a gross exaduration of prep and isn't really indicitive of what preppy people really look like.
If you showed up to your econ lecture or the yacht club wearing most any of the outfits show in this video you would be instantly recognized as trying too hard to be like them.
His pictures as examples look cringing
😂
I like the pictures
Most of them, anyway. Sometimes I'm a tiny bit confused about what clothing item he's talking about, but that could be easily fixable by just showing the piece of clothing alone at first and then show it in an outfit.
they're acc very accurate to preppy style tho
I am Christ

Not as bad as the big red boots

I do not like preppy style at all to much colors you can't be taken seriously trad style and even ivy league are much better
