    When us old folk grew up surfing we kept these locations to ourselves. How the times have changed. The waves remain the same but the crowds are different 😢

      Yeah I''d be interested to see what surf travel was like back in the day! I guess it would have bee less crowded, but places were harder to get to? You had to spend more time finding waves? And equipment wasn't as good? Do you think surfing is better now or then overall??

    And here's the key reality parts that you will find out when you travel to Ericeria for a surf trip in late Oct ;) ...
    The first and foremost thing you learn about surfing in Ericeria Portugal is that even though there's a variety of good breaks in a small area, it heavily depends on the swell angle, tide and wind conditions to align, as to which one is working... and whichever one(s) are working will be crowded with surfers of all different levels. Now read that again... Seriously, every spot anytime it's decent, you will be surrounded by at least 25 of your newest friends in the water... no matter the time of day or if it's in the middle of the work week. And don't even think that you'll sneak in a Foz do Lizandro pre dawn patrol, on a Tuesday, when it's over head barreling with a south offshore wind (ask me how I know) ... nope that parking lot will be full when you pull up... so just paddle out and smile.
    Next, there are many surf camps in the area which are filled every week with a hundred Europeans learning to surf... maybe attending a surf school is a requirement over there these days 🤷‍♂... anyway Riberia, Foz do Lizandro, Matadouro beaches are literally littered with beginners on the inside breakers. So whats wrong with that you say... nothing, just know that once they learn to stand, they paddle out and sit everywhere.
    Finally don't go expecting to catch good Pedra Branca or Crazy Left (you'll be lucky if the W swell direction and wind align), Reef (small takeoff zone, so you betta be a rippa ready to battle for waves) or Coxes (heavy localism, so you can forget that)... But they might let you paddle into one at Cave... only because you're crazy enough to try without having local knowledge of that spot.
    So now that you know all that and are still gung-ho about going, have a fun trip! oh and stop by Paozinho das Marias for their pastel de natas... so good!

    Where would you recommend to stay in Portugal if I'm looking for a not very expensive place to stay in a hotel on the beach, or in a short walking distance, which is infront or close to peaks that fit for beginner-intermediate surfers? (with wave height of ~1m walls max)

      @DanHarmon123  Před 10 měsíci

      Hey mate!! Yeah I think Selina (link in description of this vid) is a great place to stay, you can walk down the road to a couple of spots and I think they can even arrange surf trips for you! There's a beach in town that you could walk to otherwise if you can get up to Ribeira d'llhas, thats ideal!!

    Ericeira in my opinion is super overrated.
    For intemediat surfer there is only one good wave thats ribeira, which is just overcrowded, No fun!
    Coxos is protectet by locals and only for very good surfers.
    This other surfspots which are breaking on the rocks are for kamikaze only.
    There are some other spots around ericeira but not realy good.
    So all in all its more a merchandise machine with fancy food, yogaclasses, Skatepark and so on.
    Dont get me wrong its a really nice town.
    But it was definetely the wrong place for me.

    • @DanHarmon123

      Yeah fair enough!! It's definitely crowded and the locals hold it down for sure!!
