  • When I bought this motor I was told that the oil had been changed last spring. So now that it has been a year it was time to change the oil.

Next time tilt the motor up and to the side (Per manual). Works a bit better.

To remove a stubborn flat head screw put an adjustable wrench on the flat portion of the screwdriver perpendicular to it. Push in as hard as you can on the screwdriver handle while turning with the wrench.

Ok to change oil tilt it up and turn the engine to starboard. Keeps everything clean.

Everybody should get manual impact driver like in the video...works all the time on stuck stuff like that, also works with sockets...way more easy to handle and safer to not destroy stuff than an air gun.

I had to do the same thing! I bought the motor last Fall and wanted to change the gear oil before I put it away but I couldn't get the screws loosened by hand. So I bought the manual impact driver over the winter for this specific task. When I got the boat out of storage this Spring, the driver worked perfectly to free those up. I am going to to try and find out the thread size of those screws and replace with some hex bolts.

The better name for this vid is How Not to Change the Oil in a Merc 9.9.

I'm betting you haven't had your prop off in a while either. Anti seize on the threads is huge in getting things off in a marine environment.

Didn’t see you pump out all the air bubbles from the gear oil change.
You needed to keep pumping till you saw no bubbles coming out.

Put a bit of anti-seize on the plug threads before you reinstall them.
