Tim Thomas: RANKED ABOVE KOBE BRYANT?? From #1 Player in the Nation to NBA Journeyman | FPP

- In the mid 90s, there was a high schooler named Tim Thomas, who at one point was ranked above the great Kobe Bryant, as the nation’s top player. Thomas was a player built in the mold of a LeBron James or Kevin Durant. He was 6’10” and a solid 240 pounds, yet he could handle the ball, run the court, finish at the rim, post up and was even a dangerous long range shooter. Tim Thomas had everything in his arsenal, and it seemed all but guaranteed that he would be an all time great. But once he got to the NBA, he underwhelmed and never seemed to even get close to his full potential. He would show you flashes every season of just how great he could be, but spent his career bouncing around teams, as he would often be picked up after a great showing, only to fail to live up to expectations. He spent some time in Philly with a young Allen Iverson, then teamed with Ray Allen, Glenn Robinson and Sam Cassell for his longest tenure in Milwaukee. But after this, he would spend no more than 2 seasons on any other NBA team for the second half of his career. He would have some memorable performances such as his 2006 playoff run with the Steve Nash led “7 Seconds or less” Phoenix Suns, but aside from that, would have an uneventful career. It’s not that Tim Thomas had a bad career, it’s just that everyone knew that he could be so much better, but you always take into consideration what’s going on behind the scenes, and for Tim Thomas, he spent a lot his career caring for his sick wife, even walking away from the game in 2010 for exactly that reason. So, maybe his mind wasn’t all there for completely understandable reasons; and at the day, he can live happily, knowing he still put in the work to set himself up to retire early, and care for his wife, without ever having to worry about money.

I saw this dude's entire career. I can remember talking about this dude in high school. One of the greatest under achievers of all time. I'm a little less critical now because of the knowledge that he had a very sickly wife. It's possible that being the "best" or becoming the goat wasn't a priority.
Bro I love how you use the exact footage and pictures of the actual years they were playing. I love and respect that. Salute.
Great observation
Tim was a Beast in High School for Paterson Catholic...saw him play a lot in state and county tournaments
thought he was going to go straight to the league and be a legend.
unfornately i was wrong on both accounts...shame....a lot of raw talent
I saw him in wildwood memorial weekend I knew it was him immediately I was the only one, once people saw me asking for autograph they was on his nuts 😂
I never knew his wife was sick! That could weigh on anyone during a game. 💯💯💯
And it's been said he is willing to set aside basketball so he could fully meet his obligations by taking care of her without distractions.
(Well, it helped he had a guaranteed huge money and hopefully he was a good steward.)
I used to use him all the time on Kobe Bryant's NBA Courtside on N64 lol good times good times 🤣
A players id like to see is ,Harold "baby Jordan" Minor.
I'm from Milwaukee and watched Tim Thomas play for many years with the Bucks. The guy literally had every single tool and ability a player could ask for except he played with no heart whatsoever.
And when they gave him a six year-66 million contract based off playing well in one playoff series his drive seemed to go down even more. He played well here and there but was totally inconsistent and seemed to often be going through the motions.
I feel like that’s the story of a lot of the players from the 2000’s
Seems like Thomas would have thrived had he been able to play with the Suns his entire career or a similar uptempo offense. I think coaches didn’t know what to do with him because he was so versatile. He would thrive in today’s NBA.
He’s still a Milwaukee legend in my book
I recall reading about him in a 1996 issue of Slam Magazine.
Tim left A LOT ON THE TABLE. With that said, some players don’t have the perceived energy and/or drive as others. Tim Thomas reminds me a lot of T-Mac. Both guys were big for their perimeter positions, super athletic with three range. But never really became what they could have (although T-Mac managed to snake slither through the grass for a championship at San Antonio).
he lost in 2013 thank to Ray Allen
T-Mac was only part of that Spurs roster in 2013 for a playoff run rarely used.
I can't believe those Bucks teams with Ray Allen, Casell, Big Dog & Tim Thomas didn't make a Finals together
For real agree 💯 They had enough talent that they should of made it at least once . Wasnt there one year they went the distance with 76ers
In ECF
@@martinjohnson41yes it was for the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals going seven games.
They would’ve been better comp than 76ers Nets in those finals they choked mainly Big Dog Sam and Ray did well
A Huge reason Tim Thomas didn't reach his individual potential is because he spent his prime on teams that Already had established talent. He was Expected to develop into a superstar, but be used as a complimentary player
He started out with an unstable, young Philly squad that had Bubba Chuck & Stack feuding over "who was the # 1 option was." Along with Larry Brown as a egocentric HC who wanted equal attention as his players
Then got shipped to Milwaukee with an established Big 3 (Cassell, Allen & Robinson.)
Then in NY, with Marbury, the Knicks kept adding pieces like J Crossover etc
He gets a label as being nonchalant & lazy, yet doesn't get Applauded for how great of a teammate he was...
He easily could've complained, in Philly about being underutilized in favor of a George Lynch. Or griped about having to come off the bench, at PF, Milwaukee. When he was a more versatile scorer and better defender then Big Dog Robinson as the starting SF
Outside of not trying to challenge Michael Redd as the # 1 option in Milwaukee, after the Big 3 were dealt, Thomas has handled himself like a true professional
Bucks legend... Apart of that "iconic" Milwaukee Bucks roster. Led my Jesus Shuttlesworth, Mad Daawg Glen Robinson, Sam Cassell, Timmy Thomas, Caffey, Devin Ham, Desmond Mason... Y'all KNOW the vibes.
Coach George Karl
That was a dope well rounded team. Thomas was real underated
Desmond mason & ray allen never played with each other they were traded for each other
Gary Payton was part of the deal also@@stevencollins920
I had forgotten how good Tim was coming out of HS. I also forgot he was rated higher than Kobe and Jermaine O’Neal at times during HS.
Hey bro I just got recommended this video in the home page and they didn’t steer me wrong new sub dope channel and concept
GREAT video! Timmy always popped when he was coming up on a new contract. That Suns run was $$$$
Tim Thomas was the hype back in the day. Had more talent than Kobe and all the rest of the guys from 96.
No he didn’t
He did. Kobe would tell you himself that he was not the most talented guy. It was his mind that set him apart.
He absolutely had more talent then Kobe i was a 96 grad i remember my AAU coach called him Shawn Kemp with a jumper he a Tmac might be the greatest high school players ever
Timmy Thomas... The originator of the double headband lol
well done man!
Thank you 😊
still no Sprewell vid ? i guess you working on it )) he he ... so Sprewell and Dee Brown are next i guess ?? ))
Now how about a video on Kenyon Martin? 🤞 😃👍
Do OJ Mayo
Aye, can you do my favorite player??
#3 JOHN STARKS New York Knicks.
Make sure you get the baseline dunk over the Bulls team. And he has John Starks Day in Oklahoma.
2k legend TT
Tim Thomas was a special talent, but everybody is special in the NBA. There were many guys ranked above MJ as well in all levels of basketball, and both MJ and Kobe were not expected to be even nearly as great as they became. That's why the draft in any sport is unquantifiable. We could do all of the studying of who are the most NBA/NFL ready players to enter the draft, but in reality it tells us nothing about their character, or their determination to improve. Tim Thomas might have been ranked higher than Kobe in high school, but I bet if they played against each other even as high schoolers, Kobe would have dominated him head to head because Kobe already had all of the skills, but he also had intangibles that the vast majority of people do not have, including Tim Thomas.
Brian Grant
Im from Boston n I think he a jersey kid I heard of bro b4 I seen him put it like THIS if the internet was a thing back then bro hype would been Zion lebron wemby type shyt 💯never bloomed but he had moments
Ah man I remember him; he had all the ability on the world; 6’10 230lbs/ great athleticism / handle/ jump shot/ I thought the sizer got an periennal all star
Buck Williams,Mookie Blaylock,Charles Oakleyj John starks
Can you do one on Big Z, aka LeBron's first all-star teammate?
He was solid for Phoenix. Especially in the playoffs. Granted it was that only season.
Tim Thomas could of got a ring in 2010-2011 had he stay with the Mavs
I would like one a video about Horace Grant
We need the James worthy video
Patersons Finest #playaz
With his size and athleticism he should have been way better smh. Him never averaging more than 14 is crazy. His growth definitely got stunted by the teams he was playing for
Tim was dope af!!🎉 Dood was a problem! Forget the dumb shi!
Do Richard Dumas
👍
First Jeff Green. All the talent to be a monster no drive and work ethic to be amongst the greats.
He literally had heart surgery in his 20s, tough to reach your potential after that no matter your work ethic
Native Patersonian ✊🏿
Had he played for the Bulls during the epic 1st round vs. the Celtics....they would've won.
The original Draymond Green
Tim only went hard during contract years
Day 3 of asking for Antawn Jamison
no disrespect to tim thomas but for me these interests/hobbies did do and will go in this EXACT order #1 wilt chamberlain #2 kareem abdul-jabbar #3 patrick ewing #4 willis reed #5 moses malone #6 dave cowens #7 sixers #8 bucks and #9 knicks
Tim Thomas had the skills and natural talent to be an all yime great. So much wasted potential...
And then the mavs won the chip, kinda sad man.
Western conference happened
bro was born in the wrong era. He would b kuzma or j.grant in todays nba
And then just misses a ring
Swing and a miss.
