Vinyl Wrapping a Campervan

  • I’ve been wanting to do this modification to the van for a long time, I’ve even had quotes to pay someone to do it. But I just really like getting stuck in myself.
    So I picked the best weather day, with no wind and no rain, I then set about teaching myself how to wrap, using a metal based vinyl (so it doesn’t stretch well or isn’t great when heated).
    I started at 9am and finished at 9pm.

    I've done a bit of vinyl sign making myself, that's very good job you did there John. Looks like the stiffness of the material made it difficult....probably more suited to completely flat applications. That makes it a lot harder to get the finish you did. Pros use application fluid (well they do when someone else is paying) but a little washing up liquid in a water spray bottle does the same thing. That's mainly to allow for easy repositioning. Small bubbles ....pin pick the centre to make an escape hole for the air and go over them with your squeegee working from the outside to the pin hole. Van looks better now mate. Nice one. 😎

    Hats off for having a go John and not a bad result for 1st attempt, but like all things some things should be left to the pros. However if someone wants to attempt this i would advise use of heat gun and mild slip liquid ( fairy liquid 10/1 in a spray bottle) gives you more work time.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  Před 5 lety

      There’s no one in our area that would do the work due to the window frames, door rail and so on. The 1 person who quoted wanted £600 and the van for a few days. This isn’t a standard vinyl, it’s not like the stuff used to wrap cars, as you can see in the video you can’t heat & stretch as it changes colour.

    Good for you at sticking at it.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  Před 5 lety +1

      Window tinting is more tricky I think as it does stretch, the film doesn’t like air bubbles and car windows are using concave on the inside making it very difficult to work with. The trick is to pop the film on the outside of the window, with backing still on, then apply heat to shrink it to the shape, that helps a little.

    Hair dryer or heat gun on low for the corners, you will find it alot easier, try and you will see, great video.

    Made a nice job of that in the end. How long do you expect it to last using the van full time?

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  Před 5 lety +1

      I think as it stands now we have everything we think we will need, probably a lot more than we need in all honesty, so I think this setup should easily last the 2 years we have planned so far.

      @@johnmandy great stuff, I was think more in terms of the life of the vinyl. I've no experience of vinyl wrapping but I've heard it can have a lifespan as short as a couple of years if the vehicle is heavily used?

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  Před 5 lety +1

      Ah, sorry. I have office desks that I vinyl wrapped years ago and had no problems with them, the sides of the van I've covered are not really touched and nothing comes into contact with them, so I can't imagine having problems. Plenty of campervans are sold with wrapped sides and they seem to weather perfectly well.

      @@johnmandy that's good then, I guess they are improving these materials all the time, I've seen vinyl wrapped drift cars deteriorate pretty quickly but I guess they have a very hard life!

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  Před 5 lety

      Due to the windows already being on the van I could only find 1 guy willing to do this, who wanted the van for 3 days and roughly £600. Sometimes a professional can be worth their weight in gold, other times they’re just a professional because they are paid to do a job, not because they’re good at it.

    • @bobscullion3533
      @bobscullion3533 Před 5 lety

      Gadget John on tour I don’t understand where he gets 3 days from! As you’ve explained, remove the windows makes it easier and I would have relied cuts where the windows where allowing you to pull the vinyl back and work into the edges easier. A job like that should take no more than a standard shift (I’d recon 4-5 hours max) for anyone who applies vinyl for a living
