Today I bought various items from a timber merchant. I bought four sheets of 4-foot by 4-foot 3.6-mm plywood and four 12-foot floorboards. The young man working in the stores carried the timber to my van. On his right shoulder, he carried the four floorboards. Using his left hand; he grasped the four sheets of plywood on the top edge with his fingers, lifted them clear of the ground, and carried them approximately 20 yards. If I hadn't seen him do it, I would not have believed it possible to carry those pieces of plywood like that. When I got home, I tried to lift just one piece in the same way he had carried four; I couldn't even lift it off the ground. To my mind, his finger strength was insane. That's the reason I watched this video.

When I did that kind of work it was easy. You get so used to it you don't really notice the weight anymore. And you learn tricks to do it easier.
But that was many years ago, and I can't do it now. Which is why I am here too. 😁

I have clear memories of being in elementary school and doing thinks on monkey bars and pull up bars that would kill me if I tried them today. It's exciting to know that, 50 years later, it's still possible to recover at least some portion of that strength and flexibility that was just a natural part of being young.

My fingers get crampy these days, especially my right hand ones. When I work with my hands, especially auto mechanics type stuff, or anything that requires twisting, gripping, or squeezing, I get cramps bad in my index and middle finger. Very painful… I follow and trust Matt and Upright Health, so I was pleased to see this content.

I do massage-bodywork and have recently had a few clients with arthritis issues and/or loss of fine-control in their fingers. It kind of seems like there's a little bit of a give and take in between fine digital control and strong grip-strength, but maybe the two aren't as mutually exclusive as they seem. Hope you don't mind me piggy-backing on your comment, I'm hoping the Upright Health crew sees it and maybe shares a little more info on the subject if they have the body-knowledge to share :)
But here's some things I've learned in my line of work that might be helpful for you and your cramping issue, Lex: consider creating a stretching regimen that stretches the muscles you use most frequently in the opposite way that you most-often use them. So if you usually turn things out with your hands, find some stretches that rotate your wrist in (or visa versa if you favor the other way.)
For all the gripping and flexing of the fingers, get yourself a thick broccoli rubber-band to use as a finger resistance-band. Hold it looped around your finger and stretch your finger against it by extending it up. Repeat this on each finger and for each knuckle. Experimenting with different angles over time can help shake out troublesome long-term tension. Pretty sure my hands would have fallen off by now if I didn't do this one.
Additionally, spending 5 minutes before and after work stretching your hands out will do a lot to reduce injury and maintain function long-term.

I ended up here because i just signed up to do a spartan race, been a bucket list item for years but i decided if i buy the ticket then i'll finally have to go through with it, so i did. And then started training and realized "oh no. monkey bars are so much harder than i remember them being as a kid, i might be able to run 5k but i'm going to fail the race because I can't do monkey bars anymore." I appreciate all your videos on the steps to regain this ability :D

I'm enjoying your channel so much! I'm recently retired from a career in health care and have considered myself fairly fit for my age (73). But going from daily routine of bending ,squatting , stretching and lifting to basically zero over this winter has left me concerned about the next 20yrs or so that I expect to be living.... After watching the hand and arm strength activities you are demonstrating on the monkey bars it occurred to me that since so many playgrounds are seldom used by the kids any more 😢 ,that those might be a great new hangout for my girls walking group ! Free gym equipment at the public playground has been taken over by grandparents instead of grand kids !! I'm going for it !!😂😂 Thanks for the inspiration!! I'll keep watching !!😊

@@AlphaGeekgirl Never too old! I might not be able to do a lot of tricks the younger players can do, but I can do some tricks they can't do. We all learn at different rates and some things come easier to me than other powers, and vice versa. I don't need to do flips, etc. I am happy just to be dancing around the pole (and my husband is happy I am, too!) If you are thinking about it, I say do it. You won't be sorry. The pole world is very welcoming and inclusive. And it is a very fun way of exercising!

Why? I am 60 and in the early stages of doing all the boating, like kayak and sailing, in the ocean I always wanted to do. If I end up in the water, I need the strength to self rescue and get back in the boat, even in times when I am tired and the water is cold. So even though the water provides some assistance to pull myself up, the extra strength could be needed. Plus shoulder and lat strength are also needed for paddling.

I can hang okay, but my left thumb has hurt for years when I have to hold a heavy skillet and dish out left-overs, or pull weeds, etc. I will apply these techniques and see if I can strengthen that thumb. I notice that it's not weak if I keep the joint flexed, but if I pinch something hard when it's "collapsed" (hyper extended?) then it hurts.

They're called Monkey bars, but most of the open space play areas around where I live are designed for small children, so they're nothing like the facilities that feature in your footage. It's probably a H&S thing and a perception that there's a not a demand for it. Fitness and health is seen to be the domain of the upwardly mobile with excess income, I'm fairly certain that if you paid a subscription to a gym such facilities would be available. @@Uprighthealth

Wondering what kettlebell weight would be suitable. Having two that are 20% and 25% of my bodyweight and also able to do ~1min 2H-bodyweight hangs.
Now of course I could do two-hand hangs only but watching TV and stuff that 20% kettle would be nice, just unsure if it'd turn into any kind of gains worth the effort.

Calluses on the hand digging in seems to be my breaking point. Lots will have issues with this from tight or weak lats.
